Scientists have identified the rice gene Ptr as the receptor that detects a key attack protein from the rice-blast fungus, overturning the long-standing assumption that the nearby Pi-ta gene performed that job. The finding could guide breeding of blast-resistant rice, but it is not a universal cure, a guarantee of immunity, or a product farmers can buy today.
Why this discovery matters
Rice blast is caused by the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, also called Pyricularia oryzae. It attacks rice and wheat, damaging leaves, stems and grain-producing tissues. Rice supplies food for more than half of the world’s population, so losses from blast have consequences far beyond individual farms.
A 2024 estimate reported in Communications Biology put the potential benefit of preventing rice-blast losses at food for about 60 million people each year. The broader threat is larger still: an Australian National University figure published in 2025 estimates that fungal diseases cost farmers 10–23% of crops annually. Those losses include many pathogens and crops, not just rice blast.

What the 4 June 2024 study found
Researchers at INRAE, CIRAD, the University of Montpellier and international partner institutions studied how rice recognizes AVR-Pita, a virulence effector secreted by M. oryzae. The effector helps the fungus invade rice that lacks a matching defense mechanism.
Researchers used gene-silencing experiments and CRISPR/Cas9 knockout rice lines. When Ptr was disrupted, rice that had previously resisted the fungus became susceptible to strains carrying AVR-Pita. Disrupting the nearby NLR gene Pi-ta did not account for that recognition. The experiments therefore identify Ptr, rather than Pi-ta, as the gene required for detecting AVR-Pita in the tested material.
An unusual immune-receptor design
Ptr encodes a membrane protein with a cytoplasmic armadillo-repeat domain. Most well-characterized plant immune receptors belong to the nucleotide-binding, leucine-rich-repeat (NLR) family. Ptr’s architecture is different, and the study establishes that this type of armadillo-repeat protein can function as an active plant immune receptor.

Earlier work had already shown that damaging Ptr could make resistant rice vulnerable to blast. The 2024 study connects that genetic observation to the specific fungal effector that triggers the defense.
How the Ptr defense works
The interaction is conditional. A rice plant must carry a Ptr allele that recognizes the AVR-Pita sequence produced by the local fungal strain. If the fungus does not secrete AVR-Pita, or if its sequence has changed so the plant no longer detects it, this particular recognition pathway may provide no protection.
An institutional release from CIRAD summarized the result by saying that the presence of Ptr makes rice immune to strains of M. oryzae that secrete AVR-Pita. In practical terms, that statement means strong, gene-for-gene resistance under the tested conditions—not immunity to every rice-blast strain or to every form of disease.

PtrA and PtrB do not provide the same coverage
The paper reports allele-specific recognition. The plant allele and the pathogen’s effector variant must be considered together.

This is why Ptr should not be described as broad-spectrum resistance against all rice blast. PtrA appears more comprehensive across the natural variants examined in this study, while PtrB has a narrower recognition spectrum that can be defeated by specific effector changes.
Does the gene protect wheat as well as rice?
M. oryzae causes blast disease in both rice and wheat, but the 2024 discovery is a rice-genetics result. It does not demonstrate that a Ptr allele already protects wheat, nor that transferring Ptr into wheat will produce reliable field resistance. Wheat blast populations, host biology and breeding compatibility would require separate testing.

The finding could still influence wheat research by clarifying how effector recognition works and by encouraging searches for comparable resistance mechanisms. That is a research possibility, not an established wheat treatment.

- Screen germplasm. Breeders can test rice lines for PtrA, PtrB and other useful Ptr variants, while laboratories characterize which AVR-Pita forms circulate in a target region.
- Use marker-assisted breeding. DNA markers linked to a favorable Ptr allele can help breeders select seedlings before costly disease-screening trials.
- Combine defenses. Stacking Ptr with other resistance genes and integrating it with field disease-management practices can reduce the risk that a pathogen population escapes through one recognition route.
- Monitor pathogen evolution. Because one effector mutation can defeat PtrB recognition, surveillance of local M. oryzae populations is essential when choosing varieties.
The CIRAD release describes the discovery as opening the way to studying additional resistance mechanisms and applying them to crop protection. It does not announce a released seed line, a registered treatment or guaranteed immunity for commercial varieties.

Other fungal defenses are being investigated
Rice blast is one example of a much broader food-security challenge. A 2025 ANU/ANSTO study examined NUDIX hydrolase enzymes that many fungal pathogens use as virulence tools. Understanding those enzymes could eventually support engineering of more resilient rice, corn and other crops, but that work remains a research strategy rather than a market-ready product.
Fungal disease also affects cereals outside the blast system. The USDA Agricultural Research Service reports that Fusarium head blight causes more than $1 billion in annual losses in wheat and barley and contaminates grain with mycotoxins. Its 2025 research news described FgTPP1, a fungal molecule that suppresses wheat defenses. These examples show why no single rice gene can solve the world’s fungal-disease problem.
Can farmers buy a Ptr-based product now?
No. The evidence supports a gene-discovery and breeding pathway, not a commercially available cure. Farmers would need a locally adapted variety carrying a useful Ptr allele, seed supply and agronomic recommendations validated for their region. Until those are developed and tested, blast management still depends on locally approved varieties, monitoring and integrated disease-control practices.
