A no-cost security setup can provide useful protection, but the claim that this particular setup blocks more threats than most paid services is not verified: no tools, configuration, or comparative test are identified. On Windows 11, Microsoft documents built-in Defender Antivirus and web protection through SmartScreen in Microsoft Edge. Those documented features are a practical starting point, not evidence that an unidentified configuration outperforms paid products.
What the claim establishes—and what it leaves unanswered
The headline does not identify an operating system, the security tools or settings used, or what “blocks more threats” means. No comparison was found that tests this specific setup against paid services. Without those details, readers cannot verify its effectiveness or reproduce it.
“Threats blocked” could refer to different things: malware detection, blocking a malicious download, stopping a phishing page, or preventing a potentially unwanted application from running. A meaningful comparison also needs to account for false alarms, browser coverage, and test conditions. A result for one threat category or configuration would not automatically establish broader protection.

What Windows 11 includes
Defender Antivirus
Microsoft documents Defender Antivirus as built-in protection for Windows 11, including continuous malware scanning and an option to block potentially unwanted applications. These are documented capabilities, not a measured protection rate for the setup in the headline. Microsoft’s Windows security documentation describes the features.

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
SmartScreen in Microsoft Edge
Microsoft describes web protection through SmartScreen in Microsoft Edge. This does not establish that the same browser protection applies in every other browser, nor does it show how the combined setup compares with paid suites. See Microsoft’s web protection support page.
What independent testing can—and cannot—show
AV-TEST’s Windows 11 consumer test page reports an evaluation of 16 home-user security products during January and February 2026, including Microsoft Defender Antivirus. The cohort size describes the test; it is not a protection percentage or proof that the configuration in the headline beat most paid services. The cited page does not provide results sufficient to verify that claim. See the AV-TEST page.

What evidence would support the comparison
To substantiate “blocks more threats,” a test would need to identify the exact free setup and the paid products, then compare them under equivalent conditions. At minimum, readers would need to know:
- The operating system, version, security product versions, and whether settings were default or customized.
- Which threat categories and samples were tested, how old the samples were, and whether blocking was measured online, offline, or both.
- Whether the test measured real-world blocking or detection, and how many false positives each configuration produced.
- Which browsers were covered and when the testing took place.
Without those details, there is no reliable basis for saying the setup outperforms most paid services. The documented Windows features are useful context, but they do not fill in the missing comparison.
