A photochemical reaction developed by Osaka Metropolitan University researchers creates two sulfur- and nitrogen-containing organic semiconductors whose electrical behavior depends on molecular shape. The linear isomer, l-DNT, has a theoretically predicted hole mobility about five times higher than the bent isomer, b-DNT, because neighboring molecules overlap more effectively in its crystal. The result is a promising materials design—not yet a finished display, sensor, or production process.
What the flash of light changes
The flash is not an operating step for a device. It is the trigger for synthesizing the semiconductor molecules. When the precursor absorbs light, short-lived molecular intermediates form new carbon–carbon bonds and fold the precursor into a compact annulated ring structure. By changing the irradiation conditions, the researchers could produce a mixture of the two isomers or selectively obtain b-DNT.
The study was led by Takuya Ogaki and Hiroshi Ikeda at Osaka Metropolitan University. Masato Uenaga was first author, with Yasunori Matsui also contributing. Their paper, “p-Type Organic Semiconductors With an Annulated Thiazole: Photochemical Synthesis and Theoretically High Hole Mobility Predicted From Crystal Structure,” appeared in Chemistry – A European Journal in 2026 (DOI: 10.1002/chem.71361).
b-DNT and l-DNT are shape-changing isomers
Isomers have the same atoms but different bonding arrangements or three-dimensional structures. Here, the photochemical route yields two forms of an annulated-thiazole molecule:

Both compounds crystallized in ordered arrangements supported by sulfur–sulfur and sulfur–nitrogen interactions. Those contacts help determine how molecules sit next to one another, which in turn controls how readily positive charge carriers, or holes, can move through the solid.
Why the linear isomer is predicted to carry charge better
Organic semiconductors transport charge through a series of neighboring molecules rather than through a continuous inorganic crystal lattice. Electronic orbitals must overlap sufficiently for a hole to move from one molecule to the next. A molecule’s intrinsic structure matters, but the packing pattern in the crystal can be just as important.

In l-DNT, the linear shape lets adjacent molecules overlap more extensively along the calculated charge-transport pathways. That stronger intermolecular coupling produces a predicted hole mobility about five times that of b-DNT. The comparison is therefore a structure-and-packing result, not simply a claim that one molecule is “more conductive” in every circumstance.
The estimate is theoretical. It was calculated from the measured crystal structures and electronic-structure modeling; it was not obtained from a fabricated transistor or a flexible panel. Uenaga described the value as comparable to leading organic-semiconductor materials, but the study did not demonstrate equivalent device performance.

How the team reconstructed the reaction
The reaction pathway involves intermediates that exist only briefly after illumination. Ordinary end-point chemical analysis would show the products but not necessarily reveal how the bonds formed. The researchers combined three approaches:
- Laser flash photolysis: a short light pulse initiated the reaction so transient species could be examined.
- Nanosecond absorption spectroscopy: time-resolved measurements tracked intermediates on nanosecond timescales.
- Density-functional-theory calculations: computational models helped assign the observed intermediates and evaluate the energetic and electronic consequences of the new ring structure.
Together, these measurements support a sequence in which photoexcitation creates reactive intermediates, carbon–carbon bonds close, and the precursor folds into the annulated framework. Controlling illumination is consequently a way to influence molecular architecture during synthesis.

What this could mean for flexible electronics
Organic semiconductors are attractive for applications that benefit from low mass, mechanical flexibility, or solution-compatible molecular processing. Matsui identified bendable displays and wearable sensors as examples where lightweight, flexible materials could be useful. A molecule whose packing can be tuned through a clean photochemical synthesis offers researchers another route to optimize charge transport without abandoning the mechanical advantages of organic materials.

That potential remains at the materials-candidate stage. The publication does not report a transistor, display pixel, sensor array, bending-cycle test, encapsulation study, operating lifetime, manufacturing yield, or cost analysis. It also does not establish how the predicted mobility changes in a thin film, where disorder, grain boundaries, substrate interactions, and processing conditions can differ substantially from an ideal crystal.

What researchers would need to establish next
Turning l-DNT or b-DNT into a practical component would require experimental and engineering steps beyond the reported synthesis and calculations:
- Fabricate charge-transport devices and measure hole mobility under defined conditions.
- Determine whether the favorable crystal packing can be reproduced in continuous thin films.
- Measure performance under bending, repeated cycling, heat, oxygen, moisture, and illumination.
- Optimize the photochemical process for reproducible selectivity, scale, purification, and manufacturing throughput.
- Compare electrical performance with stability, processability, and compatibility with electrodes and substrates.
The key advance is therefore a design principle: a light-triggered bond-forming reaction can create closely related molecular shapes, while crystal analysis can reveal which shape offers stronger intermolecular pathways. The approximately fivefold mobility difference identifies l-DNT as the more promising of the two candidates for further testing, but it does not by itself establish a commercial device.
