Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
For the current release, install A Distant Journey 1.4.3 on Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge, using the project’s separate 1.4.3 Server Pack. Allocate at least 8 GB of memory to the server process (10–12 GB is the author’s recommendation), and have every player install the identical client pack and Forge profile. Use E4MC for a short cooperative session; use the dedicated server pack when the world must remain available.
The correct target for an A Distant Journey server
A Distant Journey (ADJ) is an adventure and RPG-focused modpack that also combines building, magic, technology, farming, combat and roleplay. Its project description says the pack is intended to feel like a different game while retaining the atmosphere of a typical Minecraft modpack. The current project information describes more than 500 mods, five chapters and six dimensions, including the Overworld, with a progression campaign that ends with restoring the Architect’s Prism.
That scope affects server setup. A large Forge pack takes longer to load than vanilla Minecraft, generates more data during the first world boot and requires more memory than a small collection of mods. The project is still actively developed, so a server that works on one release should be treated as a pinned environment rather than something to update automatically.
| Item | Current value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Pack release | A Distant Journey 1.4.3 | CurseForge lists this release as published July 10, 2026. |
| Minecraft version | 1.20.1 | The server and every client must use this Minecraft version. |
| Mod loader | Forge | Use the Forge profile and server files supplied for the pack. |
| Dedicated files | “1.4.3 – Server Pack” | Download the dedicated server pack listed under the project’s Minecraft 1.20 server packs; a client export is not automatically a runnable dedicated server. |
| Server memory | 8 GB minimum; 10–12 GB recommended | These figures come from the pack author. Reserve additional memory for the operating system and other services. |
The project page showed 124,044 downloads when accessed on October 15, 2026. That number indicates substantial use, but it is not a performance guarantee: no independent figures establish a guaranteed player count, CPU model, storage requirement or tick rate.

Choose a hosting approach before installing
Self-hosting on your own computer
Self-hosting gives you control over the files, Java/Forge environment, world data and configuration, and it avoids a recurring hosting bill. You are also responsible for keeping the machine online, allowing connections through the firewall or router, making backups, applying updates and diagnosing crashes. The computer must have more physical memory than the amount assigned to Minecraft; assigning nearly all available RAM can make the operating system unstable.
Managed hosting
A managed Minecraft host can install the complete Forge pack, including mods, configurations and datapacks, and may provide one-click updates, backups, a web console and file access. FadeHost’s published guidance describes those features and a 4 GB trial, while also stating that the service is independent of the A Distant Journey authors. Because 4 GB is below the author’s stated 8 GB minimum, that trial should be treated as a control-panel evaluation rather than adequate capacity for a production ADJ world. Confirm that the plan can be scaled to at least 8 GB, with 10–12 GB preferable.
Managed hosting is useful when the server must stay online while your personal computer is off or when you do not want to configure port forwarding. It still does not remove the client-side requirement: players need the same pack release and Forge profile as the server.

| Initial setup | You install Java/Forge, unpack files and run the supplied script. | The provider can install the Forge pack and expose a control panel. |
| Recurring cost | No hosting subscription, but you supply electricity, hardware and internet service. | Monthly or recurring charge; verify the memory tier before purchasing. |
| File control | Full control of server files, configs, logs and backups. | Usually console and file access, subject to the provider’s panel and policies. |
| Availability | Online only while your machine and network are available. | Designed to remain online independently of your personal computer. |
| Networking | You handle firewall rules and, where necessary, router port forwarding. | The provider supplies the public endpoint; you still manage player permissions. |
| Updates and recovery | You create backups and choose when to update. | One-click updates and provider backups may be available, but keep an independent copy. |
Prepare the files and prerequisites
- Pin the release. Plan to use 1.4.3 on Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge. Before downloading, check the official project page for a newer release that explicitly supports the same server/client combination. Do not mix a newer client with an older server.
- Use a dedicated server directory. Choose a folder on a drive with ample free space and regular backup capability. Avoid placing the live world inside a synchronised consumer folder that may lock or partially upload files while the server is running.
- Install the required Java version. Use the Java version required by the Forge/Minecraft 1.20.1 installation bundled with or documented by the server pack. If several Java installations exist, make sure the supplied start script resolves to the intended one.
- Reserve memory sensibly. The process needs at least 8 GB; 10–12 GB gives the recommended headroom. Leave room for the operating system, Java overhead, the launcher or panel and any other services.
- Plan access. Decide whether players will connect through E4MC for a temporary session or through a continuously running dedicated server. For the latter, identify the host machine’s local address and determine how your firewall and router will permit inbound connections.
Install the dedicated server pack
- Open the official CurseForge project. In the Minecraft 1.20 server-pack area, select the entry named 1.4.3 – Server Pack. Do not substitute the regular client download or assume that exporting a client profile creates server files.
- Extract the archive into the server directory. Preserve the directory structure supplied by the pack. If your operating system creates an extra folder around the extracted files, open that folder and confirm that the start script and Forge files are at the level expected by the pack documentation.
- Read the included instructions and scripts. The exact command sequence was not published in the project information. Use the start script and README supplied in the archive, together with the Forge installer documentation for Minecraft 1.20.1, rather than copying a command intended for another modpack.
- Run the supplied start script once. The first launch creates or verifies files and may take considerably longer while Forge and the pack initialise. Keep the console visible so you can see whether the process reaches a ready state or stops with an error.
- Accept the Minecraft EULA. When the first run creates
eula.txt, stop the server, read the agreement and change the acceptance setting only if you agree. Start the server again after saving the file. - Wait for a complete boot. Do not try to connect while Forge is still loading mods or generating the initial world. A ready console prompt and a stable log are better indicators than a window that merely remains open.
- Stop before editing configuration. Use the server’s normal stop command or stop control, wait for the save to finish and then edit configuration files. Changing files while the process is writing can corrupt data or leave settings partially applied.
If the supplied script immediately closes, launch it from a terminal or command prompt so the error remains visible. Check the Java version selected by the script, confirm that all server-pack files were extracted, and verify available memory before removing or changing mods.
Set memory and observe the first world boot
How much RAM to assign
The author’s technical notes specify 8 GB as the minimum required memory and 10–12 GB as the recommended allocation. Treat those numbers as the memory available to the server process, not as the total physical RAM in the computer. A machine with exactly 8 GB installed is unlikely to be comfortable once the operating system and background applications are included.
Do not assign all system memory to Java. Leave a practical reserve for the operating system, remote administration, monitoring and storage caches. If the server host begins swapping to disk, world saves and chunk generation can become extremely slow even when the Java heap appears large enough.

What to monitor
- Watch the console during the first launch for repeated “out of memory,” Java initialization or Forge loading errors.
- Observe whether the process reaches a ready state after generating the world. First startup can be much slower than later restarts.
- Check operating-system memory use and disk activity while a player explores new terrain.
- Record the pack release, Java version and memory setting that produced a successful boot; this makes later troubleshooting reproducible.
No independent benchmark establishes how many players a particular CPU, storage device or memory allocation can support. Test with the actual group, view distance and exploration style you intend to use instead of treating a player-count number from another pack as a promise.
Make every client installation identical
A dedicated Forge server does not download the complete modpack to joining players. Each player must install the matching A Distant Journey release and Forge profile on their own computer. FadeHost’s setup guidance also calls out this requirement.
- Have every player select A Distant Journey 1.4.3, or the exact newer release you deliberately selected for both sides.
- Confirm that the Minecraft version is 1.20.1 and that the launcher is using the Forge profile associated with that pack release.
- Allow the launcher to finish downloading and verifying all mods, configurations and required assets before attempting to join.
- Do not add client-only or optional mods casually. A mod list, configuration or loader mismatch can produce a rejected connection even when the game opens locally.
- Share the server address only after the host has completed a full boot and verified that the world loads.
When a player receives a missing-mod, wrong-version or registry-mismatch message, compare the client’s installed profile with the server pack rather than repeatedly restarting. Reinstalling the exact client profile is often safer than manually copying individual files from an unrelated installation.

Choose E4MC or a persistent dedicated server
E4MC for a short cooperative session
The pack author describes E4MC as a way to open a single-player world to remote friends in two clicks. This is the simplest option when one person wants to host an occasional session and does not need a continuously available world. The host still needs the matching pack installed, and everyone joining must use the same client version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Launch the matching A Distant Journey client and open the world you want to share.
- Use the E4MC integration’s open-to-friends control described by the pack author.
- Send the connection information E4MC provides to the players who have installed the same pack.
- Close the shared session only after players have left and the world has saved.
E4MC is a convenience path for cooperative play, not a replacement for a dedicated server that should remain online when the host is away. Treat the host computer’s availability and internet connection as the availability limit.
Dedicated server for a persistent world
For a long-running community or a world that players should access independently, keep the extracted server pack running on a suitable computer or managed host. Configure the operating-system firewall to allow the server process, then configure router port access if the machine is behind a home gateway. Use the server’s actual listening settings and your network equipment’s documentation; do not assume that an address visible only on the local network will work for remote friends.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
- Start the server and wait for the ready state.
- From the same local network, test a client connection first. This separates Forge, pack and world problems from internet routing problems.
- If local testing works, create the necessary firewall and router rules for the server’s configured port and verify them from an external network.
- Give players the public address or hostname only after external testing succeeds.
- Keep administration access separate from the public game endpoint, and grant operator privileges only to trusted accounts.
Back up before changing anything
Active development means a new pack release can change mods, configurations, world data or performance characteristics. Before updating, copy the complete world, configuration files and any scripts or server-specific settings while the server is stopped. Keep at least one backup outside the live server directory.
- Announce a maintenance window and stop player activity.
- Use the normal stop control and wait until all save messages finish.
- Copy the world directory, configuration directory and server-specific files to a dated backup location.
- Record the old pack release, Minecraft version, Forge version and memory allocation.
- Install the new server pack in a separate directory or make a restorable copy of the old directory.
- Test the updated server with a copy of the world before replacing the live instance.
- Have players update their clients only after the server test succeeds.
If an update causes crashes, missing blocks or broken progression, stop the new instance and restore the previous directory and backup. Do not attempt to repair a valuable world by deleting random mods or configuration files; those changes can make rollback harder.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
The server stops during startup
- Confirm that the server files came from the dedicated 1.4.3 server pack rather than a client export.
- Verify the Java version required by the pack’s Forge/Minecraft 1.20.1 setup and check which Java executable the supplied script actually calls.
- Make sure the archive was fully extracted and that the script can read and write its directory.
- Check that at least 8 GB is available to the process and that the operating system is not exhausting physical memory.
- Read the first relevant error in the log instead of focusing on the final cascade of messages. Do not remove mods until the error identifies a genuine incompatibility.
The process runs out of memory or becomes unresponsive
- Compare the assigned heap with the author’s 8 GB minimum and 10–12 GB recommendation.
- Free memory on the host and leave operating-system headroom; increasing the heap on a machine that is already swapping can worsen responsiveness.
- Allow the first world-generation boot to finish before judging normal restart performance.
- Reduce the number of simultaneous exploration and heavy automation activities during testing, then measure again with the intended group.
A player cannot join
- Check that the player’s pack release, Minecraft version and Forge profile exactly match the server.
- Have the player repair or reinstall the client profile instead of copying isolated mods.
- Test a local connection from the host network. If local access fails, investigate the server or client mismatch; if local access succeeds but remote access fails, investigate firewall, router or address configuration.
Players cannot reach the host from outside the network
- Confirm that the server is listening on the intended interface and port.
- Allow the Java/server process through the host firewall.
- Forward the configured game port from the router to the server’s local address, preferably one reserved for that machine.
- Test from a different internet connection, since testing your own public address from inside the same network may be affected by router loopback behavior.
An update breaks the world
- Stop the server and restore the pre-update world and configuration backup.
- Return every client to the previously working pack release.
- Read the new release notes and test the update on a copy before scheduling another migration.
Operate the server safely
- Keep versions pinned. Write the exact A Distant Journey release, Minecraft version and Forge version in your server notes. Update only during a planned maintenance window.
- Use scheduled backups. A backup made while the server is writing may be incomplete; stop the process for a clean copy or use a backup method designed for live worlds.
- Protect operator access. Give elevated permissions only to people who need them and remove access when roles change.
- Watch storage. Exploration, backups and logs grow over time. A full disk can prevent world saves and make a healthy server appear corrupted.
- Keep the machine maintained. Apply operating-system and Java security updates in a test window, then confirm that the pinned Forge server still starts.
- Document recovery. Record where the live directory, backups and start script are located, and note the steps required to restore the previous release.
What the available evidence does—and does not—establish
The pack author establishes the 8 GB minimum and 10–12 GB recommendation, and the project listing establishes the 1.4.3 release for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge plus a separate server pack. Those figures are practical starting points, not a guarantee for every hardware configuration. There is no published independent benchmark in the available material for maximum players, a required CPU model, a guaranteed storage device or a stable tick rate. World size, exploration speed, automation, view distance, Java behavior and the host’s network all affect the result.
Use the smallest test group that represents your real use case, collect logs and operating-system metrics, and increase resources only after identifying the bottleneck. That approach is safer than changing several variables at once or assuming that a hosting plan’s advertised memory automatically translates into smooth gameplay.
