gbos-vm boots Google’s Googlebook OS recovery image in a GPU-accelerated virtual machine on Apple Silicon Macs. It gives developers and curious Mac owners a way to explore the new laptop operating system without buying a Googlebook, but it is an unofficial build project—not a native Mac port or a practical daily-use setup. The maintainer documents missing real Bluetooth pairing, a 60 fps display cap, graphics and pointer issues, and security protections that differ from those on supported hardware.
What gbos-vm does—and what it does not do
The open-source gbos-vm project starts with Google’s ARM64 recovery image for a Dell Googlebook. It replaces hardware-specific vendor components with virtual-device components from Google’s Cuttlefish project, then runs the guest operating system through QEMU. For graphics, it bridges Vulkan through MoltenVK to Apple’s Metal stack.
This is a virtualized Googlebook OS environment, not Googlebook OS installed natively on Mac hardware. It also is not a generic Android build: the project uses a recovery image intended for a specific Googlebook device. The project says it does not redistribute Google’s image; setup fetches required files and checks downloads against pinned hashes.

- Magic Keyboard is available with Touch ID, providing fast, easy and secure authentication for logins and to unlock your Mac.
- Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
- It features an extended layout, with document navigation controls for quick scrolling and full-size arrow keys, which are great for gaming.
- The numeric keypad is also ideal for spreadsheets and finance applications.
- It’s wireless and features a rechargeable battery that will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges.
What you need to build and run it
This is a developer toolchain that downloads and compiles components, not a consumer app you can install and open. Android Authority’s October 8, 2026 report lists the following requirements for the setup:
- An Apple Silicon Mac with at least 16 GB of RAM.
- Xcode Command Line Tools.
- Android SDK and NDK packages.
- A Java Development Kit.
- About 60 GB of free storage for the build.
Those figures describe the reported setup, not a guarantee for every future build. Check the repository’s current instructions before starting, since build requirements can change.
What works and what remains rough
The repository describes a booting Googlebook OS guest with GPU acceleration and working Chrome. The limitations below come from the project maintainer’s documentation; they are not independent benchmark results.
Bluetooth is simulated, not connected to real devices
If the Android Emulator is installed, the VM can expose a simulated Bluetooth radio. Real Bluetooth devices cannot pair through it, and USB Bluetooth dongle bridging has not been implemented. The virtual radio therefore does not provide the peripheral support expected from a laptop.
The guest display is capped at 60 fps
The display limit is an implementation constraint: the QEMU build used by the project does not expose a refresh-rate setting. It is not a measured performance score.

- WIRELESS, RECHARGEABLE CONVENIENCE - Magic Keyboard with Touch ID connects wirelessly to your Mac via Bluetooth. And the rechargeable internal battery means no loose batteries to replace.
- WORKS WITH ANY MAC WITH APPLE SILICON - It pairs automatically with your Mac with Apple silicon so you can get to work right away. See the list of compatible devices above. Requires a Mac with Apple silicon using macOS 11.4 or later.
- ENHANCED TYPING EXPERIENCE - Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
- QUICK UNLOCK WITH TOUCH ID - Touch ID gives you a fast, easy, secure way to unlock your Mac and sign in to apps and sites.
- GO WEEKS WITHOUT CHARGING - The incredibly long-lasting internal battery will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges. (Battery life varies by use.) Comes with a woven USB-C to Lightning Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.
Some graphics and input behavior is experimental
Some flat-shaded WebGL content may render incorrectly. The guest is told that a Vulkan extension exists even though MoltenVK does not provide it. Integrated pointer modes are also experimental; the maintainer describes captured mouse input as the most reliable option.
Audio, copying, and long sessions are not well established
The repository says copying content out of the guest, right-click behavior, and extended sessions had not received a proper test. Audio was silent on one boot and worked on another. These reports leave important everyday workflows uncertain, and the available sources do not provide an independent performance benchmark for gbos-vm.

Why it is not a daily-use operating system
The main boundary is not just polish. Googlebook OS expects hardware services that this VM does not provide, including a TPM and trusted hardware-backed key services. The project substitutes software KeyMint and Gatekeeper, so keys do not receive secure-element protection.
The modified vendor partition also lacks verified boot. The repository says the other partitions retain their original verity protections and that SELinux remains enforcing, but those points do not restore verified boot for the altered vendor partition or hardware-backed key protection.
There is a local networking caveat as well. When the Android Emulator is installed, the virtual Bluetooth radio listens on 127.0.0.1 without a password. Another program on the same Mac could connect and present itself as a nearby Bluetooth device. The maintainer’s suggested mitigation is to turn Bluetooth off in Settings if this concerns you.

The project documentation explicitly frames the setup as a development VM rather than something to daily drive. That distinction matters if you rely on trusted boot, secure key storage, dependable wireless peripherals, or predictable long-session behavior.
How the VM differs from a supported Googlebook
Google describes Googlebook as a laptop category built on the Android technology stack and ChromeOS desktop foundations. Its initial device partners are Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Google’s Googlebook information and FAQ describe Android app support and interaction with phone apps as platform capabilities; those claims should not be assumed to work perfectly in this unofficial virtual machine.
| Choice | What it offers | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
gbos-vm on Apple Silicon |
A way for developers and enthusiasts to inspect Googlebook OS without buying a Googlebook; requires a Mac-based build setup. | Unofficial and experimental, with virtual-only Bluetooth, a 60 fps guest cap, untested areas, and reduced security protections. |
| A supported Googlebook laptop | The intended device category, with hardware and platform support for Googlebook OS. | Requires using or buying a Googlebook rather than exploring the OS in a Mac VM. |
Google’s developer guidance adds compatibility limits even on the platform itself: native messaging for Chrome extensions is not available yet on Googlebook OS, and extensions that request it may install but fail when they try to connect. Google also lists ChromeOS-only extension APIs that Googlebook OS does not support. This is official platform guidance, not confirmation that every extension API has been separately tested in gbos-vm.
For organizations, Google says the 2026 Googlebook launch is designed for consumer use and does not yet support domain enrollment or centralized fleet management. Comprehensive management is planned to start rolling out in the second half of 2027, according to Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education guidance.
Who should try it?
- A reasonable fit: developers curious about Android desktop behavior, technically comfortable Mac owners who want to explore Googlebook OS, or app teams seeking an experimental environment.
- A poor fit: anyone who needs a dependable work computer, real Bluetooth peripherals, mature pointer behavior, verified boot on every partition, or hardware-backed key storage.
The project author described the motivation as wanting to “poke at Googlebook OS without buying a Googlebook.” That captures the most defensible use: exploration before deciding whether the supported hardware is worth considering, not replacing it with a Mac VM.
