A structural supercapacitor is designed to do two jobs in one composite: carry mechanical loads and store electrical energy. In a 2014 research demonstration, a full-size car boot lid made from the material powered LEDs. That was a prototype, not evidence of a production car component or a product available to buy.
What is a structural supercapacitor?
Unlike a conventional capacitor mounted onto a car panel, a structural supercapacitor makes energy storage part of the load-bearing material itself. The intended advantage is to combine functions that would otherwise require separate structural material and electrical storage.
How can one material support a load and store energy?
The 2014 report describes a composite based on activated carbon fibres. The design aimed to retain the strength and stiffness associated with structural carbon fibres while providing the ionic conductivity needed for supercapacitor operation.

Researchers formed porous carbon aerogel around the fibres to increase their surface area. Chemistry World reported that this raised surface area and specific capacitance by three orders of magnitude, and also brought mechanical-property benefits. This is a result reported for the research, not a general performance figure for structural supercapacitors.

The electrolyte had to support mechanical performance while allowing ions to move. The reported design used a bicontinuous structure: epoxy resin supplied mechanical properties, while an ionic liquid provided ionic conduction. The challenge is that these requirements can conflict; improving structural integrity and preserving ion transport are not the same design goal.
Can a car body store electricity?
The research group reported forming a full-size car boot lid from the composite and using it to power LEDs. This showed the material operating as both a structural component and an energy store in a demonstration. The reports do not establish that the lid was installed in a production vehicle, nor do they establish current commercial availability.

What was the performance trade-off?
Chemistry World reported that the material had lower power density than state-of-the-art supercapacitors at the time. That comparison is historical: the 2014 report does not provide a present-day benchmark or a current product comparison.

The broader engineering problem is to balance load-bearing properties with electrochemical performance. A composite may store energy while serving a structural role, but that does not automatically make it a substitute for a conventional supercapacitor when high power delivery is the priority.

Which research was behind the demonstration?
The underlying paper was Shirshova et al., “Multifunctional Structural Energy Storage Composite Supercapacitors,” published in Faraday Discussions (DOI: 10.1039/C4FD00055B). The Royal Society of Chemistry’s Faraday Discussions blog identified the paper and demonstration on 2 July 2014; Chemistry World reported on the work on 27 June 2014.
