A cable TV box is a receiver that connects a cable provider’s television service to your TV. It can also control access to encrypted channels, so the television displays the programming the provider has authorized for that equipment.
How a cable TV box works
A cable box, also called a cable receiver or set-top box, sits between the cable service and the television. The FCC describes a set-top box as a navigation device for accessing multichannel video programming. Where channels are encrypted, the box can serve as the intermediary that checks authorization and sends the permitted content to the TV. The FCC’s technical explanation describes this role.
A television without a CableCARD may only display the signal it receives from the intermediary; it cannot independently access encrypted cable channels. The precise functions of a box depend on the provider and equipment. Recording, voice control and streaming apps are not inherent features of every cable box.

How it differs from a CableCARD or cable modem

| CableCARD | A conditional-access module used with compatible equipment to decrypt cable services. It is a component, not another name for a cable box. |
| Cable modem | Authenticates and connects equipment to a cable operator’s broadband network; it is not the receiver for cable TV programming. |
The FCC lists set-top boxes and cable cards among cable TV equipment categories in its Consumer Inquiries and Complaints Center.

Can you buy any cable TV box and use it?
No. A retail device is not automatically compatible with every cable provider. Cable systems use conditional-access arrangements, and a compatible retail device may still require a provider-supplied CableCARD or other provider support. Before buying a replacement, ask your provider to confirm that the specific equipment works with your service and what, if anything, the provider must supply or activate.

What to check before replacing one
- Provider compatibility: Confirm the exact device and conditional-access requirements with your cable provider.
- Features: Verify any needed functions, such as DVR recording or streaming apps, for the specific model rather than assuming all boxes include them.
- Connections and cost: Check the device documentation and ask the provider about required connections and any equipment or service charges before deciding.
