Minesweeper is a deduction game: reveal every safe cell without opening a mine. Each revealed number tells you exactly how many mines are in the eight surrounding cells—including diagonals. Count the covered neighbors, account for mines you have actually deduced, and use the remaining clues to identify safe cells or mines.
What does the number in a cell mean?
A number counts mines in every cell touching it horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. A 1 means exactly one of those neighboring cells contains a mine; a 2 means exactly two do. The clue does not say which neighboring cells are mined by itself.
A blank cell has no neighboring mines. Many versions automatically reveal nearby safe cells when you open one, producing a cascade. Controls and opening behavior vary between games, so check the particular game’s instructions.

How to solve a board, one clue at a time
- Find a clue next to covered cells. Count all of its covered neighbors, including diagonal cells.
- Subtract confirmed mines. If you have logically identified and marked neighboring mines, subtract their number from the clue. Do not count an uncertain guess as confirmed.
- Compare what remains. If the clue still needs zero mines, its other covered neighbors are safe. If it needs as many mines as there are covered neighbors left, all those cells are mines.
- Compare overlapping clues. Nearby numbers often share some covered neighbors. Their different requirements can narrow down what is in the shared group or identify an extra cell.
- Update and repeat. After a deduction, reconsider every affected clue. A newly opened safe cell may reveal more numbers and create further deductions.
For example, if a 2 already touches one confirmed mine and has one covered neighbor left, that last neighbor must be a mine. If a 1 already touches its one confirmed mine, its other covered neighbors are safe—provided the marked mine is truly in the right place.

How do basic Minesweeper patterns work?
Patterns are shorthand for comparing the covered-neighbor sets around clues. The digits alone are not enough: first verify which covered cells touch each number, including any extra cells at a corner or along an irregular edge.
Comparing a 1-1 edge
Suppose one 1 touches two covered cells, and a second 1 touches those same two cells plus one extra. The shared pair already contains exactly one mine, so the extra cell is safe. This conclusion depends on the second clue having just that one extra covered neighbor.

Comparing a 1-2 edge
If the first clue is a 1 and the second is a 2, and they see the same two covered cells with the second seeing one extra, that extra cell must be a mine. The shared pair accounts for the first clue’s one mine; the second clue requires one more.
Using 1-2-1 and 1-2-2-1 shapes
These familiar edge patterns are extensions of overlapping-clue reasoning. Check the actual layout and each number’s covered neighbors before applying them. If either clue touches additional covered cells, a memorized pattern may lead to a wrong deduction.

How should you use flags?
A flag is a mark you place to keep track of a cell you believe contains a mine. It does not prove that the cell is mined, and most games do not validate flag placement as you play. Treat a flag as confirmed only when the clues support it.
Many games let you reveal a cell with a click or tap and place a flag with a right-click or long-press. Exact controls differ by game and device. Some games can be won by revealing every safe cell, so flagging may help with tracking and speed without being required by the win condition.

What is chording, and when is it safe?
Chording is a shortcut that opens the still-covered, unflagged neighbors of a revealed number once the number of flags around it matches the clue. If a 2 has two neighboring flags, for example, the game may open its other covered neighbors when you chord it.

Use this only when the flags are on the correct cells. Chording checks the flag count, not whether you chose the right locations; a misplaced flag can leave a mine among the cells that open. When uncertain, open safe cells individually instead.

Does Minesweeper always give you a safe first move?
No single opening rule applies to every version. Minesweeper.org says its first click is safe. MinesweeperHQ says its implementation places mines after the first click and protects the clicked cell and its immediate neighbors. Those are examples of game-specific behavior, not a universal guarantee. Check the rules for the version you are playing.
Can Minesweeper require a guess?
Yes. Ordinary randomly generated boards can reach a position where the visible clues do not distinguish between alternatives. For instance, if a 1 touches two covered cells and no other clue or remaining-mine constraint distinguishes them, either cell could contain the mine.
Before guessing, inspect the rest of the board and consider any remaining-mine information the game provides. Some games offer a no-guess mode intended to generate boards with a logical route, but its guarantees depend on that implementation. Minesweeper Coop reports that, on its own 20×16 generator, 18.8% mine density produced 17% solvable candidates, 20.6% produced 7%, 22% produced 3%, and 24% produced 0.3%. These are the service’s reported measurements, not general rates for Minesweeper. The same page reports that at 300 generation attempts, 20.6% density did not fall through to an unchecked board across 200 games on each board size, while 22% did.

Minesweeper is implemented in many games and websites, so opening protection, no-guess guarantees, input controls, and board settings are not universal. Minesweeper.org lists a Beginner board of 9×9 cells with 10 mines; treat that as one common setup, not a standard all versions must follow. When choosing a game or practice mode, check its first-click protection, whether it permits guesses, available controls, and board dimensions and mine count.
