The reliable way to solve a circular seating-arrangement puzzle is to separate orientation from placement: mark who faces inward or outward, define clockwise movement, anchor one seat, convert each clue into a relative position, and test the finished circle against every condition. The circle has no natural “first” seat, so rotating a complete arrangement does not create a new solution.
What a circular seating puzzle is testing
A circular seating puzzle gives you a set of people, a number of seats, and verbal relationships such as “A sits opposite B,” “C is immediately left of D,” or “E is not adjacent to F.” Your task may be to find the entire arrangement or answer one question about it, such as who sits opposite a named person or who occupies a particular position.
The hard part is not drawing a circle. It is translating every phrase from the seated person’s point of view. In a straight row, left and right usually feel obvious. Around a circle, a person’s facing direction determines which way their left points, and the same clockwise movement can be left for one person and right for another.
Use a diagram with numbered seats and a visible clockwise arrow. Write each person’s facing direction beside their name. That small setup prevents the most common error: solving the relationships from the reader’s viewpoint instead of the seated person’s viewpoint.

Set the direction convention before placing anyone
People facing the center
Under the convention used by most of the consulted SATHEE SSC and banking materials, a person facing inward has their left clockwise and their right anticlockwise. Imagine sitting in the circle and looking toward its center; your left hand points along the clockwise direction.
People facing outward
For a person facing away from the center, the directions reverse: their left is anticlockwise and their right is clockwise. Do not apply the inward rule to an outward-facing person.
Why diagrams sometimes appear to disagree
One SATHEE Bihar seating page states the inverse direction for inward-facing people, while the SATHEE SSC and bank theory pages use the convention described above. When a source or answer key appears to reverse left and right, do not silently mix the two systems. Draw a small figure facing inward, label the clockwise arrow, and state your convention at the top of the page. Then interpret every clue consistently and verify the final layout against the wording.
A useful diagram check is to draw one inward-facing stick figure and mark the direction of that person’s left hand. Repeat the exercise for an outward-facing figure in a mixed-direction puzzle. The person’s own viewpoint, not “our left” while looking at the page, controls the answer.
Translate the clue vocabulary
| Clue wording | What it means | How to handle it |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate neighbor | The person occupies one of the two seats directly beside the named person. | Check both sides unless the clue specifies left or right. |
| Immediate left/right | The adjacent seat in the named person’s own direction. | Apply that person’s facing direction before moving one seat. |
| One person between | Exactly one occupied seat lies on the stated arc between the two people. | Usually this means a two-seat separation; confirm which direction the wording specifies. |
| Opposite | The two people sit directly across the center. | It is possible only with an even number of seats and means half a circle away. |
| Not adjacent | The two people do not sit in neighboring seats. | Use it to remove candidates after stronger placements are made. |
| Second or third to a side | Count seat positions from the named person in the specified direction. | “Second left” is normally two positions away; count explicitly and wrap around the circle. |
Natural-language clues can be underspecified. “There is one person between A and B” may not say whether the intervening seat is clockwise or anticlockwise. Keep both possibilities until another clue removes one, unless the question’s wording clearly identifies an arc.
A repeatable solving method
- Count the seats. Draw the correct number of positions around a circle. Number them clockwise so that every later move is auditable.
- Choose an anchor. If no seat is fixed, place any one person in seat 1. A complete circle can be rotated without changing any relative relationship, so this does not lose a solution.
- Record every facing direction. Mark inward, outward, or the individual direction for each person. In a mixed puzzle, do not use one global left/right rule.
- Rewrite the clues as moves. For each statement, identify the reference person, direction, number of seats, and whether the relationship is positive or negative.
- Place the strongest relationships first. Start with an opposite pair, a fixed-distance clue, or an immediate left/right clue. These sharply restrict the diagram. Add blocks of linked neighbors next.
- Preserve alternatives. If a clue permits two locations, record both candidate arrangements rather than guessing. A small candidate table or separate sketches prevents an early assumption from contaminating the rest of the solution.
- Apply negative clues after positive placements. “Not adjacent” and similar exclusions are most useful once the definite relationships have reduced the possibilities.
- Fill remaining seats systematically. Each unplaced person should be assigned only to an open seat that satisfies all clues already used. If a placement creates a contradiction, backtrack to the most recent branch.
- Read every original clue again. A layout is valid only if it satisfies every condition, including clues that were not needed to construct it. If two layouts survive, retain both unless the question supplies another discriminator.
Worked example: six people facing inward
Suppose six people, A through F, face the center. The clues are:

- B sits immediately left of A.
- C sits opposite A.
- D sits immediately right of C.
- E is not adjacent to A.
Number seats 1 through 6 clockwise and place A in seat 1. Because everyone faces inward, left is clockwise and right is anticlockwise.
- B goes one clockwise step from A, into seat 2.
- C goes half a circle from A, into seat 4. Six seats make three seats the opposite distance.
- D goes one anticlockwise step from C, into seat 3.
- The open seats are 5 and 6. Seat 6 is adjacent to A, while seat 5 is not. Therefore E must be in seat 5 and F in seat 6.
| Seat | Clockwise position | Person |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Anchor | A |
| 2 | One clockwise from A | B |
| 3 | One anticlockwise from C | D |
| 4 | Opposite A | C |
| 5 | Not adjacent to A | E |
| 6 | Remaining seat | F |
The table is written clockwise, but the left/right decisions came from each seated person’s perspective. Rotating every name one seat would describe the same relative solution.
Worked example: opposite and distance clues in an eight-seat circle
Assume eight people face inward. Anchor A in seat 1 and use these clues:
- B is opposite A.
- C is second to A’s left.
- D is immediately right of B.
Opposite means four seats away in an eight-seat circle, so B is in seat 5. A’s left is clockwise, making C seat 3. B’s right is anticlockwise, placing D in seat 4. The remaining people can be tested in the remaining seats against any additional adjacency or exclusion clues.
This example shows why “second to the left” should be counted as a position, not interpreted as “the next person after one neighbor.” If a question instead says “one person sits between A and C,” the result is also a two-seat separation, but you must check whether either arc is allowed.
How to solve mixed-facing circles
Mixed-facing puzzles require a person-by-person direction check. The seat order remains global and can still be numbered clockwise, but the meaning of left and right changes with the occupant.

Use an orientation ledger
| Person | Facing direction | Left moves | Right moves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inward-facing person | Toward center | Clockwise | Anticlockwise |
| Outward-facing person | Away from center | Anticlockwise | Clockwise |
Keep this ledger beside the circle. For example, if B occupies seat 4 and faces outward, “C is immediately left of B” sends C to seat 3, not seat 5. If B faced inward, the same wording would send C to seat 5.
Do not infer a neighbor’s direction
A clue such as “A sits immediately left of B” describes A’s location relative to B. It does not say whether A faces the same way as B. Use a separate clue for A’s orientation, or leave it unknown if the puzzle permits that.
Check both direction and occupancy
After every mixed-facing placement, verify two things: the destination seat is open, and the move was calculated using the reference person’s orientation. A diagram can look geometrically plausible while violating the directional wording.

Positive clues tell you where someone must be; negative clues tell you which candidates are forbidden. Place the positive relationships first whenever possible. Then mark prohibited seats around each named person.
- For “A is not adjacent to B,” cross out the two seats immediately beside A for B, or the two seats beside B for A.
- For “C is not opposite D,” cross out the single opposite seat when the circle has an even number of positions.
- For multiple exclusions, intersect the restrictions rather than applying them in isolation. A seat allowed by one clue may still be rejected by another.
Do not use a negative clue to choose between two possibilities until you have checked whether the positive clues already make one possibility impossible. This keeps the reasoning reversible and makes mistakes easier to locate.
Candidate management and backtracking
Some puzzles are intentionally underdetermined until several clues are combined. Draw a branch whenever a person can occupy more than one seat. Label each branch with the assumption that created it, such as “E clockwise of C” or “G in seat 6.”

Continue each branch only until it either completes consistently or produces a contradiction. Typical contradictions include two people assigned to one seat, a required opposite seat already occupied by the wrong person, or a supposedly nonadjacent pair becoming neighbors. Discard that branch and return to the latest unresolved choice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep surviving layouts separate. If the question asks for a relationship shared by every surviving layout, compare those layouts directly. If the layouts give different answers, the available clues do not establish a unique answer; do not force one by choosing an arbitrary branch.
Opposite positions and seat counts
“Opposite” has a precise geometric meaning: the line connecting the two people passes through the center. That position exists only when the number of seats is even. With 6 seats, the opposite position is 3 seats away; with 8 seats, it is 4 seats away; with 10 seats, it is 5 seats away.
With an odd number of seats, no seat is exactly halfway around the circle. If a puzzle uses “opposite” with an odd count, recheck whether the wording means “roughly across,” refers to a different arrangement, or contains an error. Do not invent an approximate opposite seat.
Verification checklist before choosing an answer
- Did you state whether clockwise is being measured on the diagram and identify the facing direction of every relevant person?
- For every left/right clue, did you use the reference person’s orientation rather than the reader’s viewpoint?
- Are all people in distinct seats, with no empty position overlooked?
- Does every opposite relationship use exactly half the circle?
- Does every “one person between” or fixed-distance clue use the correct number of seat steps and the correct arc?
- Are all immediate-neighbor statements truly adjacent?
- Do all “not adjacent” and other negative clues hold?
- If more than one layout remains, did you preserve both instead of assuming uniqueness?
The final read-through is not optional. A layout assembled from several strong clues can still fail a short exclusion statement introduced earlier in the question.

Reversing left and right
Symptom: Every placement seems mirrored, or an answer key disagrees even though the circle looks orderly.
Fix: Draw an inward-facing figure, mark its left as clockwise under your stated convention, and redo only the directional clues. For outward-facing people, reverse the movement.

Treating the circle like a row
Symptom: The first and last seats are treated as far apart.
Fix: Wrap every count around the circle. In a six-seat layout, one step anticlockwise from seat 1 is seat 6.
Forgetting rotational symmetry
Symptom: You believe there are multiple solutions merely because the entire drawing can be rotated.
Fix: Anchor one person in an arbitrary seat whenever no absolute position is supplied. Rotated copies are the same relative arrangement.
Using “opposite” with an odd number of seats
Symptom: You select a seat that is only approximately across the circle.
Fix: Count the seats. Exact opposition requires an even total and a half-circle separation.

Applying exclusions too early
Symptom: A candidate is discarded before all possible positive placements are considered.
Fix: Record the exclusion, but postpone the decision until definite relationships have narrowed the available seats.
Checking only the clues used in construction
Symptom: The final map answers the question but violates an unused statement.
Fix: Copy the original clues into a checklist and tick each one against the completed map.
A compact solving worksheet
For timed practice, use four small areas on one page:
- Circle: numbered seats and a clockwise arrow.
- Orientation ledger: each person marked inward or outward.
- Clue translations: entries such as “B = A + 1 clockwise” or “C = A + 4,” with the reference orientation noted.
- Candidate check: one row per surviving layout and one column per clue.
This format separates geometry from language. If a contradiction appears, you can identify whether the error came from the direction rule, the seat count, a branch assumption, or a missed condition instead of redrawing the entire puzzle from memory.

Choose exercises that include worked solutions, circular diagrams, and a mixture of positive and negative clues. Begin with all-inward six-seat problems, then add opposite relationships, fixed distances, and ambiguous “one person between” wording. Move to mixed-facing circles only after the basic direction convention is automatic.
After solving, explain each placement in a sentence: name the reference person, state that person’s facing direction, count the seats, and identify the resulting destination. This verbal audit exposes reversed directions more reliably than checking whether the picture simply “looks right.”
