If pressing A types S—or pressing S types A—check the selected keyboard layout first if you’re using Windows. If the layout is correct, inspect any key-remapping software, including PowerToys. The cause is not always the same, so the operating system and keyboard model matter.
1. Check the selected keyboard layout in Windows
Windows can have multiple keyboard layouts installed, and the active one determines which characters keys produce. Check the input indicator on the taskbar and select the layout you intend to use. You can also press Windows + Space to cycle through installed layouts. See Microsoft’s instructions for managing language and keyboard/input layouts.
The display language and keyboard layout are separate settings. Microsoft notes, “Changing the keyboard layout only changes the layout and doesn’t change the Windows display language.” You do not need to change the language Windows uses for menus just to select a different keyboard layout.

2. Inspect explicit key remapping
If the intended layout is active, check whether an app has been configured to change what A and S produce. For example, Microsoft PowerToys Keyboard Manager can remap one key to another. To make A and S swap outputs, the configuration needs both mappings: A to S and S to A. Microsoft documents this in its PowerToys Keyboard Manager guide.

PowerToys remappings apply only while PowerToys is running and Keyboard Manager is enabled. To test whether it is responsible, close PowerToys or turn off Keyboard Manager, then try typing again. If that restores normal output, review or remove the A-to-S and S-to-A mappings.
3. Check whether the issue is specific to a keyboard
If changing the Windows layout and disabling remapping do not help, establish whether the problem follows one keyboard or happens with more than one. Note the computer and keyboard model, operating system, whether the affected keyboard is built in or external, and whether the swap occurs in multiple apps. Those details help identify which device-specific support instructions to follow; the A/S symptom alone does not establish a hardware fault.

4. If you use an Apple keyboard in Windows
For an Apple keyboard used in Windows through Boot Camp, Apple provides guidance on Windows key equivalents and recommends installing current Apple software updates for Windows and Windows support software when the keyboard behaves unexpectedly. Its guidance is general and does not identify an A/S swap specifically as a Boot Camp issue. Consult Apple’s instructions for using an Apple keyboard in Windows with Boot Camp.
What if you use macOS or Linux?
The Windows layout and PowerToys steps above do not establish the cause or fix for a swap on macOS or Linux. Check the active input source and any keyboard-remapping utility using instructions for your operating system and keyboard model. If the symptom persists, gather the device and OS details and test whether another keyboard behaves the same before settling on a cause.
