Yes, a 4 TB drive can be initialized as MBR, but on conventional 512-byte logical-sector drives, Windows cannot address all of its capacity through MBR. To use the full drive as a data disk, use GPT. If it is a Windows boot disk, confirm the computer supports UEFI before changing its partition scheme.
Why MBR leaves part of a 4 TB drive unavailable
MBR records partition boundaries using 32-bit sector addresses. With 512-byte logical sectors, those addresses cover 4,294,967,295 sectors, or about 2.199 terabytes (roughly 2.2 TB in decimal units, approximately 2 TiB). Microsoft explains that capacity beyond this limit cannot be addressed by Windows when a disk uses MBR. The drive is not defective; the partition scheme cannot describe the entire space. Microsoft’s explanation of Windows support for disks larger than 2 TB details the limit.
Manufacturers generally label capacity in decimal terabytes, while some operating-system displays use binary units. That difference can make a displayed figure look smaller, but it does not account for a 4 TB MBR disk exposing only about 2 TB. The limit described here applies to the common 512-byte logical-sector scenario; a 4Kn disk has a different theoretical address ceiling, but GPT remains the practical choice for a general-purpose 4 TB Windows disk.
Choose GPT or MBR based on how you use the disk
| Partition scheme | When it fits | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| MBR | Legacy BIOS workflows and disks no larger than about 2 TB on conventional 512-byte logical sectors | It cannot expose the full capacity of a 4 TB disk through the normal Windows MBR path. Microsoft describes up to four standard primary partitions; extended partitions and logical drives are a separate detail. Microsoft’s BIOS/MBR partition guidance |
| GPT | Data disks larger than 2 TB and Windows system disks booted in UEFI mode | Windows can manage disks above 2 TB. Microsoft’s GPT deployment guidance allows up to 128 partitions, with a maximum size of 18 exabytes per partition in that guidance. Microsoft’s UEFI/GPT partition guidance |
Microsoft recommends GPT for disks larger than 2 TB. For a data disk, GPT is usually the straightforward choice. A non-boot disk does not have the same firmware boot requirement as a Windows system disk, though the operating system and any enclosure or adapter still need to support the setup.

If the 4 TB drive is a Windows boot disk
A Windows installation on a UEFI-based computer uses GPT for the disk containing Windows. A GPT system disk must boot through UEFI; switching a disk to GPT without ensuring the machine is configured for UEFI can leave Windows unable to start. Check the computer’s firmware capabilities and Windows configuration before altering a boot disk. Microsoft’s MBR2GPT documentation explains the tool’s eligibility checks and firmware requirements.
How to make the full capacity usable
New or empty data disk
If the disk has no needed data, initialize it as GPT in Windows. In Disk Management, select the disk and choose the GPT partition style when prompted. If the disk is already initialized as MBR, Microsoft’s basic Disk Management conversion procedure requires deleting its partitions or volumes first; that removes their contents.

- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Back up any files you need, and verify the disk by its capacity and identity before making changes.
- Open Disk Management and locate the intended 4 TB disk.
- If it already has partitions or volumes, delete them only after confirming the backup. Right-click the disk label and choose Convert to GPT Disk. For a disk not yet initialized, choose GPT when prompted to initialize it.
- Create and format a new volume in the unallocated space. Windows should then be able to use capacity beyond the MBR boundary, subject to device and operating-system support.
Microsoft’s disk partition-scheme conversion instructions describe the Disk Management process and its prerequisites.

Do not use the empty-disk conversion steps on a system disk. Microsoft’s MBR2GPT tool is designed to convert eligible Windows system disks without deleting the volumes, but it first validates the disk layout. It requires UEFI support, and after a successful conversion the firmware must be set to boot in UEFI mode. Back up important files, confirm the selected disk, and follow Microsoft’s validation and conversion instructions rather than assuming every MBR installation qualifies.

Why a 4 TB disk may still show less than expected
If the disk is already GPT but Windows still reports only part of its capacity, MBR’s addressing limit may not be the cause. Check whether the remaining space is unallocated in Disk Management and whether the disk is being presented at its full size by its enclosure, adapter, or storage controller. Do not delete or reinitialize partitions simply to investigate: those actions can erase data.
Partition-table operations also depend on how the operating system sets a disk layout. Microsoft’s IOCTL_DISK_SET_DRIVE_LAYOUT documentation describes the Windows interface for setting a drive layout; it is not a substitute for checking the disk and backing up files before a conversion.
