A 30,000mAh power bank may be allowed on a flight, but its capacity can put it above the point where airline approval is required. The key figure is watt-hours (Wh), not the mAh number on the box: at the common assumed cell voltage of 3.7V, 30,000mAh works out to 111Wh. Check the exact bank’s Wh marking and your airline’s current rules before you buy or travel.
Why 30,000mAh can be a problem for air travel
Airline battery limits are expressed in watt-hours because mAh alone does not show how much energy a battery stores. You need the battery voltage to convert between the two.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says to convert mAh to amp-hours by dividing by 1,000, then multiply by volts. Using 3.7V as an estimate, the calculation is 30,000mAh ÷ 1,000 = 30Ah; 30Ah × 3.7V = 111Wh. This is an estimate, not a universal specification for every 30,000mAh bank. Can you bring a 30,000mAh power bank on a plane?
Possibly, if its labeled Wh rating is within the applicable limit and the airline approves it when required. A 30,000mAh label by itself cannot answer the question: the bank’s actual Wh marking and the carrier’s rules matter.
The FAA treats power banks and portable chargers as spare lithium batteries for baggage purposes. They must be carried in carry-on baggage, not checked baggage. FAA guidance also limits spare lithium-ion batteries in the 101–160Wh range to two per person. For personal-use rechargeable batteries below 100Wh, the FAA says there is no quantity limit under its guidance, but airlines can set stricter quantity or Wh limits. FAA passenger guidance

Check with the airline for its current restrictions and any required approval before leaving for the airport. The FAA distinguishes its dangerous-goods rules from TSA security rules and directs travelers to consult their carrier for additional restrictions; compliance with one set of rules should not be treated as a promise of acceptance by every airline or at every screening point.

What to check before buying a high-capacity bank
- Labeled Wh: Look for a clear, legible watt-hour rating on the bank or its documentation. Do not rely on a generic conversion if the manufacturer provides the exact figure.
- Airline and route rules: Check the carrier you will fly with, especially if the bank is in the 101–160Wh band. Confirm whether approval is needed and whether quantity limits apply.
- Charging fit: Check USB-C output capability and port configuration against the devices you intend to charge.
- Size and weight: Compare the physical dimensions and weight with what you are willing to carry.
- Evidence for performance claims: Confirm capacity and output specifications in the manufacturer’s documentation. The mAh rating does not state how much energy will reach a phone after conversion losses, nor does it establish a particular charge count.
If you want to reduce the chance of an approval requirement, compare the labeled Wh of lower-capacity banks rather than choosing by mAh alone. A lower mAh rating does not automatically prove a bank is below 100Wh; check its actual Wh marking. The right capacity also depends on the devices you need to charge and how many charges you require.

For example, Targus lists its 100W USB-C Portable Power Bank, model APB080GLZ, at 25,000mAh and says it is configured below 27,000mAh. Those are manufacturer-stated specifications, not independent test results or a guarantee that airlines will accept the product. Targus product specifications

The FAA identifies battery damage, overheating, water exposure, overcharging and improper packing as possible triggers for thermal runaway. That does not establish that all high-capacity power banks are unsafe, but it does make a damaged or recalled bank a travel concern.

- Do not carry a damaged or recalled battery that is likely to spark or generate dangerous heat unless it has been removed or otherwise made safe, as the FAA advises.
- Keep a power bank in your carry-on baggage rather than checking it.
- Follow the manufacturer’s charging, storage and packing instructions.
