Certifications can be worth pursuing when their syllabus teaches you things your self-directed learning has skipped. In a September 18, 2026 essay, developer Mihai Perdum describes earning two credentials in quick succession: Jira Administration for Cloud (ACP-120) mostly formalized work he already knew, while Anthropic’s Claude Certified Architect – Foundations exposed patterns and configuration options he had not encountered. His distinction is useful: the learning path may be valuable even when the badge is only limited evidence of practical ability.

What changed Perdum’s view of certifications?

Perdum had long been skeptical of certifications. He reports earning Atlassian’s Jira Administration for Cloud certification, ACP-120, and Anthropic’s Claude Certified Architect – Foundations within days of each other. The contrast between the two experiences changed how he thought about certification study.

Jira mostly named familiar work

Perdum says the ACP-120 material largely mapped his existing Jira Cloud administration work to Atlassian’s terminology. He still reviewed less-frequently used details, but the syllabus was mostly familiar territory.

The Claude syllabus revealed gaps

Despite having built agentic workflows, Perdum says the Claude architecture syllabus introduced foundational patterns and supported configuration options he did not know existed. In his account, the material exposed gaps that his work-focused learning path had not led him to notice.

That is a personal learning experience, not a measured result or proof that every learner will get the same value. Perdum’s point is that a credential’s syllabus can function as a map: it can guide a learner into relevant areas they might not otherwise study.

Are certifications worth it?

That depends less on the badge’s prestige than on what the syllabus covers for you. Self-directed study often deepens around immediate tasks and interests. That can build useful expertise, but it can also leave adjacent concepts unexplored simply because no current project has required them.

Perdum’s practical test is to compare the syllabus with your actual knowledge gaps. If most of it describes work you already do, preparation may mainly help you review and formalize that knowledge. If it includes unfamiliar concepts relevant to the work you want to do, the study may be worthwhile even if the credential itself has limited signaling value.

Compare the learning, not just the badge

  • Syllabus coverage: Does it address topics you have not learned, or mostly restate familiar tasks?
  • Work relevance: Will you use the platform or skills the credential covers?
  • Applied practice: Does preparation include exercises, realistic scenarios, or hands-on work alongside reading?
  • What passing demonstrates: Is the assessment evidence of completing a defined exam, or is there a separate basis for judging practical performance?

A certificate records that someone passed or completed a defined assessment. It should not be treated by itself as proof of production competence, nor does Perdum’s essay establish that certifications predict hiring outcomes or job performance. His memorable distinction is: “The certificate is a receipt for that walk. The walk is the thing.”

Check the Jira exam scope before making a plan

Atlassian announced that ACP-120 and ACP-620 are planned to merge in January 2027. Under that announcement, ACP-620 is expected to retire and selected material is to be incorporated into an updated ACP-120. The announcement identifies January 8, 2027 as the target date to take ACP-620 before retirement. Because this is a scheduled change, not a timeless exam detail, check Atlassian’s credential-change announcement and the current credential page before choosing study materials or booking an exam.

Perdum’s essay is an account of what two syllabi revealed to one learner; it does not provide evidence that either credential improves employment prospects or guarantees on-the-job performance. Its more useful lesson for deciding whether to study is narrower: look for a syllabus that takes you beyond the edge of what you already know.
