The U.S. video game industry is changing across a much wider landscape than game releases alone: consumer spending includes content, hardware and accessories, while the industry itself spans software, publishing, tools, services, retail and support. The latest available figures put U.S. consumer spending at $60.8 billion in 2025 and estimate 82,930 direct industry jobs. Those numbers describe different things: spending by consumers is not the same as the industry’s measured economic impact.
What “intelligent design” means in this industry context
“Intelligent design” is not established here as a standard name for a particular shift in game development. The available U.S. evidence instead shows an industry evolving through its scale, audience, spending mix and range of business activities. It does not establish that artificial intelligence is the defining force behind current game design or production.
That distinction matters: a broad industry overview can be grounded in measured consumer and employment data, but claims about AI-led design would require evidence about specific tools, studios or development practices.
How much do Americans spend on video games?
The Entertainment Software Association (ESA), Circana and Sensor Tower report $60.8 billion in U.S. consumer spending on video games in 2025. The figures were restated in March 2026; the release’s headline and initial text still show the earlier $60.7 billion total, so the updated figure should be treated as a correction, not a separate measure. The corrected breakdown is:

| U.S. consumer spending category | 2025 amount |
|---|---|
| Content | $52.4 billion |
| Hardware | $5.4 billion |
| Accessories | $2.9 billion |
Content accounted for most of the reported spending, with hardware and accessories making up smaller but distinct categories. These figures are consumer spending, not a total for every company’s revenue or the industry’s full economic contribution. ESA, Circana and Sensor Tower’s 2025 U.S. spending release explains the reported measure and restatement.
How many people play, and how do they play?
The ESA’s 2025 Essential Facts report says more than 205 million Americans play video games. This is a U.S. audience figure, not a worldwide player count. The report also says 89% of players had played online and 55% played with others weekly, illustrating that play often includes online or social activity as well as individual play.

For additional context on the survey behind the 2026 ESA release, YouGov conducted it from February 11 to 25, 2026, with 13,545 respondents recruited from its online panel. The release says results were weighted to represent the U.S. population by age, gender, ethnicity, education, state, census region, and the distribution of gamers and non-gamers. Those details describe the survey’s design; they do not turn the findings into a global estimate. The ESA’s 2026 survey release describes its methodology.

What counts as the video game industry?
The sector includes more than studios that make games. The ESA and TEConomy Partners’ 2026 report groups U.S. industry activity across several connected areas:
- Game-related software: studio and independent developer teams, developer and publisher operations, publishing, and development tools.
- Hardware and peripherals: consoles, gaming computers and related equipment.
- Development services: specialized services that support game creation.
- Retail and support: selling games and equipment, alongside other industry support functions.
In the report’s definition, game-related software accounts for more than 76% of direct industry employment. Hardware is visible in consumer spending, but the employment estimate is not a complete count of the global supply chain: it excludes much of the overseas manufacturing workforce for consoles, components and peripherals.

How many U.S. jobs and how much economic impact?
For 2025, the ESA and TEConomy Partners estimate 82,930 direct jobs in the defined U.S. video game industry. They separately estimate that the industry supported 250,838 jobs across the U.S. economy, with $95.8 billion in total economic impact and $65.5 billion contributed to U.S. GDP. The supported-jobs and economic-impact figures are modeled measures; they are not direct payroll counts or consumer spending totals.

Sixty-five percent of software-sector establishments had fewer than 10 employees, while eight sites with at least 1,000 employees accounted for 29% of software-sector employment. These figures show that small establishments coexist with a concentration of employment in a small number of large sites; they do not mean every studio is small. An estimated 14,500 jobs, about 17% of U.S. industry employment, were remote in 2025. The report cautions that its employment database is conservative and may not capture every industry entity. See the ESA and TEConomy Partners’ 2026 economic impact report for definitions and estimates.
What the evidence does—and does not—show about change
Taken together, the figures show a large consumer market, a broad player base and an industry whose work reaches beyond game software into hardware, tools, services and retail. They also show why different measures should not be collapsed into a single claim about “industry size”: spending tracks consumer outlays, direct jobs track employment within a defined industry, and supported jobs and economic impact use broader modeled estimates.
They do not, on their own, show that AI is transforming design, how studios use AI, or whether AI-generated content is displacing other work. “Intelligent design” should therefore be read as an ambiguous title phrase rather than a verified name for the industry’s current direction.
