Sometimes—but there is no guarantee. Some people with cat allergies can live with a cat using a personalized combination of exposure-reduction steps and clinician-guided treatment. Whether that is workable depends on the actual cause and severity of symptoms, asthma or breathing symptoms, and how well the plan helps. An allergist can help clarify the diagnosis and options before you make a major pet decision.
What causes a cat allergy?
Cat allergies are reactions to proteins found in sources such as dander, skin flakes, saliva, and urine—not simply to fur. Cats produce multiple allergens, which can spread on fur and skin or be carried on clothing. Allergens can remain in indoor places even when no cat lives there, so symptoms in a cat-free room do not rule out exposure. AAAAI’s pet allergy guidance and ACAAI’s pet allergy guidance explain these exposure routes.
Sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, a runny nose, and wheezing around a cat can be consistent with allergy, but similar symptoms may have other causes. Allergy testing with an allergist or immunologist can help identify what is triggering symptoms and inform a management plan. This is particularly important when asthma, chest symptoms, or significant reactions are involved.
Are any cat breeds hypoallergenic?
No breed can be reliably promised as hypoallergenic. AAAAI states, “There are no truly ‘hypoallergenic breeds’ of dogs or cats.” ACAAI likewise says that all cats produce allergens and that studies have not shown cats to be hypoallergenic. Hair length and shedding do not make a breed reliably safe, so a short-haired or hairless cat should not be treated as an allergy-safe choice.

What can you change at home to reduce exposure?
Environmental steps work on different parts of the problem: direct contact, airborne particles, and allergens collected on surfaces. They are best considered as a sustained combination, not as a single fix. The furry-animal exposure-control practice parameter discusses using combined measures.
- Protect the bedroom: Keep the cat out of the bedroom and, where practical, off upholstered furniture. A closed door can reduce exposure in that room, but it will not contain allergens throughout the home.
- Limit direct contact: Avoid close face-to-face contact such as hugging or kissing the cat, and wash your hands after petting.
- Clean reservoirs: Use a high-efficiency vacuum or a central vacuum, and consider reducing carpet and other surfaces that collect allergens. Mattress and pillow covers, ventilation, and removal of allergen reservoirs may be part of a combined plan; covers are not established as a stand-alone solution for everyone.
- Consider grooming arrangements: If possible, have a non-allergic household member brush the cat outdoors. Weekly bathing is also listed in ACAAI guidance as a way to reduce airborne allergen, but bathing is demanding and evidence reviews describe short-lived effects and uncertain symptom benefit when used alone.
- Use filtration as exposure control: A HEPA air cleaner in a bedroom or living room may lower airborne allergen over time. That reduction should not be mistaken for proven symptom relief.
If a cat leaves the home, residual dander does not disappear immediately. AAAAI notes that it may take six months or more to completely get rid of dander, so moving a cat out is not an instant reset.

Will a HEPA air purifier help cat allergies?
A room HEPA cleaner may reduce airborne cat allergen, but that does not establish that it will relieve symptoms. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 35 cat-allergic people living with cats, the active bedroom cleaner reduced airborne cat allergen compared with placebo. The investigators found no significant differences in measured nasal or chest symptoms, sleep disturbance, peak flow, or rescue medication use. The study was published in 1998 in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

The practical distinction is important: filtration can target airborne particles, while cleaning addresses settled reservoirs and contact measures reduce direct exposure. The trial supports allergen reduction in the air, not a promise of clinical improvement. No specific purifier model was compared in that study.

What treatments can an allergist discuss?
Depending on the diagnosis and symptoms, a clinician may discuss symptom-directed medicines, including antihistamines and other over-the-counter allergy medicines, or allergen immunotherapy. AAAAI cautions that over-the-counter medicines may help symptoms but are not ideal as a long-term treatment plan, and recommends discussing allergy shots with an allergist. ACAAI also describes medications and immunotherapy as treatment options. Suitability and likely benefit vary by person; a clinician should guide those decisions rather than assuming a treatment will make living with a cat safe or comfortable. The 2026 review of allergen immunotherapy discusses its potential as a disease-modifying approach as well as limitations involving formulations, standardization, and prescribing.

- Health and safety: How severe are symptoms, and are asthma or breathing symptoms present?
- Diagnostic confidence: Has testing clarified whether the cat is the cause, or might another trigger explain the symptoms?
- Exposure beyond the home: Cat allergens can travel on clothing and persist in indoor spaces without a resident cat, so avoiding one household does not guarantee avoiding all exposure.
- Feasibility: Can the household maintain bedroom restrictions, cleaning, filtration, and other measures over time?
- Response to treatment: What happens with a clinician-guided plan, and are its burdens acceptable?
- Personal consequences: Include the emotional impact of keeping or rehoming a pet in the decision.
Talk through this balance before making a decision where possible, especially if symptoms affect breathing. If you do remove a cat, plan for continued cleaning because allergen may remain in the home for months.
