A pinpoint drop of water makes a plant-inspired nanofiber sheet fold itself into a tube-like channel that carries liquid. It is a laboratory material described in a 2016 research paper—not a conventional drinking straw or a retail product.
How does the material become a channel?
The 2016 study, “Mimosa Origami: A nanostructure-enabled directional self-organization regime of materials,” describes a Janus bilayer: two different surfaces joined in one sheet. A pinpoint water stimulus triggers folding along a predetermined path, and that folding can propagate to create a three-dimensional channel. The authors describe the process as converting surface energy into directional kinetic and elastic energies. Wong et al., Science Advances, June 24, 2016.
The tube-like shape gives the material its “straw” comparison: it is a way to direct liquid through a self-assembled channel, not evidence that the sheet works like an everyday drinking straw.

New Atlas’s June 27, 2016 account identifies the two nanofiber layers as superhydrophilic polycaprolactone and superhydrophobic polyvinyl chloride (PVC). In that account, the polycaprolactone layer curls around water while the PVC layer helps confine it. These layer-specific details are reported by New Atlas; the paper’s abstract establishes the Janus bilayer mechanism. New Atlas, June 27, 2016.

What did the researchers measure?
In the reported experiments, Wong and colleagues measured a water transport velocity of up to 8 cm/s and a flow rate of up to 4.7 μl/s. The paper says these rates were up to two orders of magnitude higher than those of traditional wicking-based devices. These are experimental results, not specifications for a consumer product.
The study also reports flexible channels longer than 10 cm, with curved, bent, and split geometries. New Atlas separately says a water drop could be delivered up to 15 cm along the material; that report’s distance should not be confused with the paper’s channel-length result. Neither figure establishes how the material would perform in a drinking straw.

Could it be used outside the lab?
The paper identifies microfluidics, biosensors, and water purification as potential applications. New Atlas also mentions infectious-disease analysis using biosensors and microrobotic systems as possibilities. These are proposed uses, not evidence of deployed products, clinical validation, drinking-water safety, or mass production.

The cited sources describe a research material and possible applications, not a retail drinking straw. They do not establish that this nanofiber material is commercially available.
