That headline figure was not a disclosed personal payment to Mint part-owner Ryan Reynolds or the final amount T-Mobile reported for the completed deal. The acquisition closed on May 1, 2024; later SEC filings describe an upfront payment and a separate, performance-based earnout.
Did T-Mobile buy Mint Mobile?
Yes, but technically T-Mobile bought Mint’s parent company, Ka’ena Corporation, rather than Mint Mobile as a standalone company. T-Mobile’s March 15, 2023 announcement said it would acquire all of Ka’ena and its subsidiaries, including Mint Mobile, Ultra Mobile, and Plum. How much did T-Mobile pay for Mint Mobile?
The answer depends on which stage and measure of the deal you mean. In March 2023, T-Mobile announced a maximum purchase price of up to $1.35 billion, initially described as 39% cash and 61% T-Mobile stock. The amount was subject to performance indicators and contractual adjustments, so $1.35 billion was an announced ceiling—not a guaranteed payment or the final purchase price. T-Mobile’s announcement

In its 2024 Form 10-K, filed in 2025, T-Mobile reported the acquisition’s upfront payment at an initial fair value of $956 million, before subsequent adjustments. The filing also notes that part of the payment settled the prior wholesale relationship. Separately, T-Mobile said up to an additional $420 million could be payable as an earnout, depending on Ka’ena’s specified performance indicators. These numbers describe different parts of the transaction: the announced maximum, the reported upfront payment, and a contingent earnout. They should not be added or treated as interchangeable without accounting for the deal’s terms and adjustments.

When did the Mint Mobile deal close?
T-Mobile reported that the acquisition closed on May 1, 2024, and that Ka’ena became a wholly owned subsidiary. T-Mobile’s 2024 Form 10-K
How much did Ryan Reynolds make from the Mint Mobile sale?
The reviewed sources do not disclose Reynolds’s ownership percentage or personal proceeds, so they do not establish how much he received. The Associated Press described him as a part owner of Mint when the acquisition was announced, but that does not reveal his share or payout. Associated Press

T-Mobile’s announcement said Reynolds would continue in a creative role for Mint. In the announcement, he said: “I am so proud of the entire Mint team and so excited for what’s to come,” said Ryan Reynolds. At announcement, T-Mobile said the acquired brands would generally operate as a separate business unit. T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert also told the Associated Press: “Over the long-term, we’ll also benefit from applying the marketing formula Mint has become famous for across more parts of T-Mobile,” Sievert said. These were statements about the deal and its expected strategic rationale; the sources do not establish whether every announced operating detail remained unchanged after closing. Associated Press
