If a website says cookies are disabled, the fix depends on your browser and whether the site needs ordinary cookies or third-party, cross-site access. Start by identifying the affected browser and device, then allow cookies for that site if possible instead of changing a broader privacy setting.
Before changing a cookie setting
Cookies let websites retain information such as sign-in state and preferences. Some embedded tools also rely on third-party cookies, which involve access across sites and are controlled separately in some browsers. A site-specific exception is usually the narrower choice when the problem affects just one website.
- Identify the browser and device. Safari on iPhone uses the iPhone Settings app; these steps are not the path for Safari on Mac or other iOS browsers.
- Work out what is failing. A sign-in that does not persist may involve ordinary site cookies. An embedded tool or learning-management-system (LMS) feature may need third-party or cross-site access.
- Change only the necessary setting. Prefer an exception for the affected site where the browser offers one.
- Reload the affected page. Some permissions take effect only after the page is reloaded.
How do I enable cookies in Chrome?
These steps are for Chrome on a computer. Google separates third-party-cookie controls from on-device site data controls for first-party cookies, so do not treat the third-party setting as a universal switch for every kind of cookie.
- Open Chrome and select More > Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies.
- To allow third-party cookies broadly, select Allow third-party cookies.
- To make a narrower exception, find Sites allowed to use third-party cookies, select Add, and enter the site. To cover an entire domain, Google documents adding
[*.]before the domain. - Reload the affected page.
Chrome blocks third-party cookies by default in Incognito. A temporary allow choice there lasts for that Incognito session. In regular browsing, Google documents a site exception as lasting 90 days or until it is switched off. Google warns that sites may not work as expected when cookies are disallowed; deleting cookies can also sign you out and remove saved preferences. How do I enable cookies in Firefox?
Firefox’s desktop help describes managing Enhanced Tracking Protection globally from Settings > Privacy & Security and adjusting protection for an individual site with the protections control. The labels and available options can differ by release; Mozilla’s current help is the best reference if the interface on your computer does not match.
For a Microsoft-documented LMS workflow, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data > Manage Exceptions, enter the website, choose Allow, and save. This is guidance for that use case, not a promise that every Firefox release has identical labels. Mozilla Support: Enhanced Tracking Protection in Firefox for desktop.

How do I allow cookies for one website?
Use a site exception where your browser provides one. The exact control differs by browser, and some options apply specifically to third-party cookies rather than ordinary site cookies.
| Browser and scope | Where to add or change access |
|---|---|
| Chrome on a computer: third-party cookies | Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies > Sites allowed to use third-party cookies > Add. Google documents [*.] before a domain to cover the domain. |
| Edge: site cookies | Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Cookies > Allowed to save cookies > Add site. |
| Firefox: Microsoft-documented LMS workflow | Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data > Manage Exceptions; enter the site, choose Allow, and save. |
| Safari: Microsoft-documented LMS workflow | Microsoft’s guide instructs users to turn off Prevent cross-site tracking for the cited LMS case. This is broader than allowing one ordinary cookie. |
Google documents that a Chrome third-party-cookie exception in regular browsing lasts 90 days or until switched off. For other browsers, the cited guides do not state a matching expiration period. Microsoft Learn: Allow cookies for LMS URLs in your browser.

How do I allow third-party cookies for an LMS or embedded tool?
A learning-management-system tool using an LTI 1.3 handshake may need third-party browser cookies for the LMS URL. Microsoft Learn’s guidance, last updated September 15, 2025, addresses this particular integration need; it does not mean every LMS feature or website requires third-party cookies.
- Chrome: Add the LMS URL under Sites allowed to use third-party cookies, rather than changing the broad setting if a site exception is sufficient.
- Edge: Use the cookie/site permission controls and add the LMS to the allowed list.
- Firefox: The guide lists Manage Exceptions > Allow.
- Safari: The guide instructs users to turn off Prevent cross-site tracking for this LMS case. That setting is broader than a single-cookie exception and changes a privacy protection.
Third-party access can allow content or activity to be associated across sites, so keep the change as narrow as your browser permits. If a work or school device will not let you edit the setting, ask your administrator; organization policy may manage it. Microsoft Learn: Allow cookies for LMS URLs in your browser.
Why does a website say cookies are disabled?
- The browser blocks the type of cookie the site needs. Check whether the failing feature relies on ordinary site cookies or third-party/cross-site access.
- You changed a setting in the wrong place. For iPhone Safari, Apple’s setting is under the iPhone’s Settings app, not a browser-window menu.
- The site needs an exception. A per-site allow list can fix one affected site without enabling access broadly.
- The browser is managed by an organization. If controls are locked or unavailable on a work or school device, an administrator may need to change the policy.
After changing the relevant setting or exception, reload the page and try the feature again. Avoid clearing all cookies as an initial fix: in Chrome, deletion can sign you out and remove saved preferences.
