In ffmpeg.wasm reports, it has appeared with larger frame workloads, repeated jobs, and a custom build; those examples do not establish one shared cause. For a photo slideshow, a separate verified pitfall is EXIF orientation: decode images with imageOrientation: 'from-image' when your browser and image pipeline support it.
What “memory access out of bounds” means in ffmpeg.wasm
The message says that WebAssembly code attempted to access an address outside its permitted memory range. By itself, it does not tell you why that happened. Physical memory pressure is one possible explanation to investigate, but the error alone does not establish that your machine needs more RAM—or identify a browser, command, codec, build, or worker lifecycle fault.
For API and package details, start with the official ffmpeg.wasm usage documentation and the project overview. Check the documentation that matches the versions in your application; the available reports do not establish a universal memory limit or a version-wide fix.
Three reported failure patterns to distinguish
Larger frame and snapshot workloads
In ffmpeg.wasm issue #673, opened January 16, 2024, a Next.js and TypeScript user reported that a workflow extracting video frames, drawing rectangles, and producing PNG snapshots worked with less data but failed as the amount increased. The report associates the failure with a larger workload in that setup; it does not prove a general threshold or confirmed root cause.

Successive files or jobs
In ffmpeg.wasm issue #704, opened March 13, 2024, a user reported a crash during repeated video-thumbnail processing. The reported figures—roughly 60–70 files, with a loop above 80 as a reproduction—describe that user’s setup, not a benchmark or a typical limit. The reporter suspected retained workers and accumulating memory, but that explanation was not confirmed.
A later command in a custom build
An Emscripten issue #22400, opened August 19, 2024, describes a custom FFmpeg WebAssembly build that reportedly failed on a second or later command in a session. The report includes build details and a cleanup-code stack trace. It is evidence of a reported repeated-command failure in that custom build, not proof that stock ffmpeg.wasm builds or all repeated commands share its cause.

How to narrow down the cause
Treat this as a reproduction problem, not a diagnosis you can make from the exception text. Change one variable at a time and capture enough detail to compare a passing run with a failing one.
- Start with one small input and one command. Keep the exact command arguments and output, and capture the complete FFmpeg log and browser stack trace.
- Increase workload gradually. Compare small and large inputs, then vary frame count or image dimensions. This can reveal whether the failure tracks with the amount of data or frames in your particular case.
- Test repeated work separately. Run one job, then several sequential jobs with the same inputs and arguments. If only later jobs fail, investigate batch handling and the repeated-command path instead of assuming the first job’s workload is the trigger.
- Change codecs or filters only after establishing a baseline. Keep input and job count fixed while testing a different codec or filter combination so the result is interpretable.
- Record the setup. Note the
@ffmpeg/ffmpegand@ffmpeg/coreversions, browser and version, input format and dimensions, and whether you use the stock core package or a custom Emscripten build. - Audit batch file handling and cleanup. Check names and cleanup paths, but do not treat calling a termination method as proof that every resource was released. The issue report’s contrary observation is not an official lifecycle guarantee.
These steps help make the failure reproducible; they are not a maintainer-verified fix. The reports do not establish that adding RAM, changing computers, or any single cleanup call resolves this error generally.

Why phone photos can appear sideways in a slideshow
Some phone images store their intended rotation in EXIF metadata rather than having pixel data that is already rotated. A search-indexed excerpt of a slideshow article says createImageBitmap(file, { imageOrientation: 'from-image' }) applies EXIF rotation. That is a useful decoding option to test when images appear sideways, but verify it in the target browser and the exact path your application uses to decode and pass images into the slideshow.
What the “four more gotchas” claim can—and cannot—support
The full five-item slideshow article was not available for verification; its indexed excerpt supports only the EXIF-orientation detail above. There is not enough evidence here to responsibly name or explain four additional gotchas. The error reports also do not support treating slideshow image orientation as the cause of a WebAssembly out-of-bounds exception: they concern separate problems unless a reproduction demonstrates a connection.
