Degaussing uses a strong magnetic field to change or cancel magnetization. For data storage, it can make information on magnetic media—such as tapes and hard drives—unreadable, but it does not erase SSDs or other flash storage. On modern hard drives, it can also make the drive unusable.

What degaussing means

NIST defines degaussing as reducing magnetic flux to “virtual zero” by applying a reverse magnetic field matched to the storage medium’s coercivity—the resistance of its magnetic material to being changed. In simpler terms, the field must be strong and suited to the medium to alter the tiny magnetic regions that represent recorded data. NIST’s glossary definition gives the technical wording.

A degausser can generate its field electromagnetically, by passing current through a coil, or with permanent magnets. In an electromagnetic unit, current direction, duration and intensity affect the field’s polarity, duration and strength. NSA/CSS describes the purpose as changing magnetic-domain alignment until recorded patterns are undecipherable. Its May 2021 requirements document also says vendors should identify the media and form factors their devices can destroy.

What degaussing can—and cannot—erase

Media Can degaussing work? Important qualification
Magnetic tape, floppy disks and magnetic-stripe cards Yes, with suitable equipment Use equipment approved or rated for the specific medium and follow its instructions. Canadian Centre for Cyber Security guidance covers these media.
Hard disk drives (HDDs) Yes, if the degausser has sufficient capability for the drive’s recording technology Modern HDDs may need very high field strength, and degaussing can damage the mechanism beyond repair. It is not a way to erase a drive and keep using it. Canadian guidance explains this limitation.
Solid-state drives (SSDs), flash storage and flash components in hybrid drives No These are not magnetic media, so degaussing does not sanitize their stored data. NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 and Canadian guidance exclude flash-based storage.

The medium’s label alone is not enough to select a device. Magnetic recording technologies evolve, and an older or underpowered degausser may fail to sanitize newer media. NIST’s current SP 800-88 Rev. 2, published September 26, 2025, warns that a device can be damaged while target data remains unsanitized. Field strength by itself is not proof that a particular model works for a particular drive or tape.

When it makes sense to use degaussing

Degaussing is relevant when the information is stored magnetically and the applicable policy permits the method. It is generally a poor choice if the goal is to erase an HDD and then reuse it, because modern drives can be rendered unusable. It is the wrong method for flash-based devices altogether.

For an organization deciding how to sanitize media, the method should follow its security policy and the sensitivity of the information. NIST Rev. 2 points to relevant standards, including IEEE 2883 and NSA specifications, for technique-specific requirements. Whether media should also be physically destroyed depends on the governing policy and media-specific standard; there is no single follow-on sequence that applies in every case.

How to choose a degausser or service

  • Match the media: Confirm that the equipment covers the exact medium, form factor and recording technology. Never assume it works on SSDs or flash storage.
  • Check rated capability: Follow the degausser manufacturer’s specifications and instructions. The Australian Signals Directorate warns that insufficient field strength, or older equipment that cannot handle newer magnetic orientations, can make the process ineffective. See its media guidance.
  • Understand the procedure and verification: Check required passes, adapters, media preparation and how the process is verified. NSA/CSS says vendors should state which media and form factors a degausser can destroy.
  • Decide whether the media must remain usable: Degaussing can permanently disable modern HDDs. If reuse matters, select a suitable sanitization approach under the applicable policy rather than assuming degaussing preserves the drive.
  • Consider process control: If your organization needs approved equipment, documented handling or a controlled process, a qualified media-sanitization or destruction service may be appropriate.

As one example of a manufacturer claim—not independent validation—Garner lists its TS-1XT as a 20,000-gauss model on its degaussing information page. A field-strength figure alone does not establish compatibility or effectiveness for a specific item of media.

Degaussing in naval engineering

The term also appears in ship systems, a separate engineering context from erasing computer media. The Defense Logistics Agency lists an active specification, MIL-PRF-32545, for Advanced Degaussing Systems covering specified Navy ship groups, including surface ships, aircraft carriers and submarines. The DLA specification record establishes that use of the term; it does not provide a plain-language explanation of how those systems operate.

SABRENT USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station, 2.5/3.5in (EC-DFLT)
  • SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
  • USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
  • REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
  • 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
  • PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
