Gesture control is already built into some vehicles, but the available evidence does not establish a broad market trend or a universal way to add it to an existing car. BMW says selected iDrive functions can be operated with hand movements on vehicles equipped with Operating System 7 or 8.5. For other vehicles, check the exact model’s equipment list and owner documentation: a software generation alone does not guarantee the feature, and no compatible universal retrofit is established here.

What automotive gesture control does

In-car gesture control uses hand movements as an input for selected cabin functions. It is an alternative interface for tasks such as audio or call controls—not automated driving, hands-free driving, or driver monitoring.

BMW’s official FAQ says several iDrive functions can be operated by hand motion in vehicles with BMW Operating System 7 or 8.5. It does not list every supported gesture, model, market, or retrofit option. Verify the equipment on the specific car and consult its owner documentation before assuming the feature is available.

Which cars have it?

The sources available here do not support a current, comprehensive list of makes and models. A June 2017 Mobility Engineering report described gesture control in BMW 7-Series and 5-Series vehicles at that time, including volume adjustment, call handling, and a configurable action; it also reported Volkswagen had announced the feature for the Golf. Those are historical examples, not confirmation of current availability, trim fitment, or market coverage.

Can you add gesture control to a car?

No universal consumer retrofit kit or compatible add-on is established by the sources cited here. BMW documents an integrated feature, while the academic work discussed below evaluates a research interface rather than an aftermarket product. That is not evidence that gesture control can be added to an arbitrary car by installing an accessory or updating software.

If you are considering a retrofit, ask the vehicle manufacturer or an authorized service provider whether a supported system exists for your exact car. Do not assume a camera, sensor, or infotainment upgrade will provide the required hardware, software integration, or vehicle-specific validation.

How to judge whether a gesture system is useful

Touchless input is not automatically easier or less distracting. A practical comparison should look at the task, the movement required, how clearly the system responds, and what happens when it fails to recognize a command.

  • Function coverage: Identify which tasks are actually supported and which still require voice, touch, or physical controls.
  • Input location and movement: Check whether the gesture is made in mid-air or on the steering wheel, and whether it takes a hand away from a familiar control position.
  • Feedback: The driver should be able to tell where to gesture and whether the command registered. The 2017 Mobility Engineering report identified feedback as a weakness of touchless gesture control.
  • Precision and accidental activation: Consider whether gestures are distinctive and repeatable. Lee and Yoon describe gesture interfaces as potentially ambiguous and imprecise; their steering-wheel design constrained the gesture area.
  • Learnability: A small set of memorable gestures is easier to use than a large vocabulary. Lee and Yoon note that gestures can be difficult to understand and remember, and may be culture-bound.
  • Attention demands: Assess whether the interaction reduces glances or hand movement without adding visual or cognitive effort. Touchless does not mean distraction-free.
  • Fallback controls: Check whether common functions remain available through tactile or other familiar controls when a gesture is missed or the feature is disabled.

What the safety evidence does—and does not—show

In a 2021 driving-simulator study, Sang Hun Lee and Se-One Yoon recruited 32 participants to compare a steering-wheel finger-spreading interface paired with a head-up display against a traditional center-console tactile interface. The authors reported approximately 20% faster emergency response with their proposed interface; lane- and speed-maintenance performance was not significantly different. These results apply to that experiment, not to real-world crash rates, every gesture system, or a commercially available vehicle feature.

Gesture input should also be kept distinct from driver-assistance automation. Mercedes-Benz USA’s driver-assistance guidance says its Level 2 features require drivers to stay engaged, monitor the road, and be ready to take control. That guidance provides context about driver responsibility; it is not evidence that gesture controls improve or worsen safety.

What wider availability would require

Expanding gesture control across more vehicles is an engineering and availability challenge, not simply a matter of adding a gesture vocabulary. Systems need to support useful tasks, make commands easy to learn, provide clear confirmation, avoid false triggers, and retain dependable alternatives. The cited sources do not establish how many automakers, models, or drivers currently use gesture control, so historical examples should not be treated as a present-day adoption measure.
