Niobium announced on December 3, 2025 that it had closed an oversubscribed follow-on investment of more than $23 million to advance its fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) hardware. The company said it planned to use the funding to move its second-generation platform from prototype work toward production silicon, customer pilots and early deployment—not that those milestones were already complete.

What is Niobium’s FHE hardware accelerator?

Niobium is developing specialized hardware to speed up fully homomorphic encryption workloads. FHE lets software perform computations on ciphertexts without first decrypting the data, with the aim of limiting plaintext exposure to the infrastructure handling a workload. The trade-off is computational cost: the TREBUCHET research paper notes that FHE requires substantially more computation than equivalent operations on unencrypted data. The 2023 TREBUCHET paper discusses the general challenge; it does not validate Niobium’s hardware or performance claims.

Niobium’s product direction combines an accelerator with software and a cloud deployment layer. Its April 2, 2026 announcement for The Fog described a mistic Core FPGA accelerator supporting the platform at launch, alongside a purpose-built ASIC in development with SEMIFIVE and Samsung Foundry. The announcement named encrypted semantic search (secure RAG), federated learning and encrypted machine-learning classification as initial application examples.

What Niobium said it would do with the funding

According to Niobium’s December 3, 2025 funding announcement, carried by citybiz, the investment was intended to support several connected development efforts:

These were stated plans and milestones. The announcement does not establish that an ASIC had entered production or that broad customer deployments had begun.

How the hardware and cloud platform fit together

The accelerator is the hardware intended to perform FHE computations; The Fog is the cloud platform Niobium introduced for running applications and AI workloads on encrypted data. They are related parts of the company’s offering, but hardware development, platform access and evidence of workload performance are separate questions.

Niobium’s April 2026 release described The Fog as being in private beta and set out a planned late-Q2 public launch. A June 2026 partner-program release later described broader access as planned for Q3. Those announcements record historical plans, not confirmation of current availability. What the SEMIFIVE partnership adds

On February 19, 2026, semiconductor design firm SEMIFIVE announced an accelerator-development design win with Niobium. SEMIFIVE reported a contract value of approximately KRW 10 billion (USD 6.86 million) and said the chip would use Samsung Foundry’s 8nm Low Power Ultimate process. Those commercial and process details are partner-reported; they describe a development engagement, not a completed chip or production shipment. SEMIFIVE’s announcement characterized the accelerator prospectively as expected to become one of the first commercially viable FHE accelerators.

What is—and is not—known about performance

Niobium’s April 2026 Fog release claimed “up to 2x” FHE performance compared with any GPU or accelerator then on the market. That is the company’s comparison, not an independently verified benchmark in the available sources. The releases cited here do not provide independent workload tests, benchmark methodology or an audit of customer deployments.

For a meaningful comparison among FHE accelerators, readers would need details such as supported encryption schemes and software compatibility, security parameters, end-to-end results against a named baseline, memory and data-movement requirements, developer tools, deployment options and production availability. The public announcements cited here do not provide enough comparable benchmark information to rank Niobium against alternatives.

What the $23 million announcement means

The financing gives Niobium capital it said it would use to advance its FHE accelerator from prototype work toward production-oriented hardware and customer pilots. Later company and partner announcements describe an FPGA-based path, a cloud platform and ASIC development involving SEMIFIVE and Samsung Foundry. They do not, by themselves, establish completed production silicon, verified performance leadership or broad deployment. The investment amount and intended uses are company-reported; the contract and foundry details are SEMIFIVE-reported.
