The Samsung Galaxy A17 5G and Nothing Phone (3a) Lite are close on some core specifications, but their strengths differ: Nothing lists a larger 120 Hz display and faster wired charging, while Samsung includes optical image stabilization on its main camera and promises more major Android upgrades. The announced prices are from different market and launch contexts, so they do not establish a current, universal price gap.
Price difference: compare local listings, not launch prices
Samsung announced a UK launch price of £199 for the Galaxy A17 5G in its 27 August 2025 announcement. Nothing announced initial UK and EU prices for the Phone (3a) Lite: £249 / €249 for 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage, or £279 / €289 for 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage, in its 29 October 2025 announcement.
Those figures are launch prices from different regional and publication contexts, not synchronized current checkout prices. The German Nothing store listed the 8 GB/128 GB model at €249 as sold out in a 2026 access snapshot; that volatile listing does not establish general availability or a market-wide current price. Check local retailers for the same storage configuration before deciding which costs less.

Display and everyday performance
Nothing specifies a slightly larger display and an adaptive refresh rate up to 120 Hz; Samsung lists a 6.7-inch screen with a 90 Hz refresh rate. The higher stated ceiling may make the Nothing phone the more appealing specification for readers who prioritize smooth scrolling, but the figures alone do not establish how every app looks or feels in use.
The phones use different processors: Exynos 1330 in the A17 5G and Dimensity 7300 Pro in the 3a Lite. Without matched performance tests, those names and clock specifications are not enough to declare which phone is faster, particularly for sustained workloads.

Cameras: stabilization versus ultra-wide resolution
Samsung specifies optical image stabilization (OIS) for the A17 5G’s 50 MP main camera. Nothing lists a 50 MP main camera without stating OIS in the cited specifications. OIS is a concrete hardware distinction, but it does not by itself prove which phone takes better photos or video.
Nothing’s ultra-wide camera is listed at 8 MP, compared with Samsung’s 5 MP ultra-wide. The megapixel difference does not establish image quality; sensor, lens, processing, and real-world results also matter. Both phones list a 2 MP macro camera.

Software support and storage
Samsung promises six OS upgrades and six years of security updates for the A17 5G. Nothing promises three major Android updates and six years of security patches for the 3a Lite. The stated major-version update commitment is longer for Samsung, while the announced security-support duration is six years for both. These are manufacturer commitments, not evidence of how promptly or consistently updates will arrive.
Both phones support microSD expansion up to 2 TB according to their manufacturers. Samsung says its A17 5G configurations start at 4 GB RAM and 128 GB storage. Nothing’s listed 3a Lite configuration has 8 GB physical RAM; its additional “up to 8 GB” virtual RAM is not extra physical memory. Confirm the configuration sold in your region before purchase.

Battery, charging, and water resistance
Each manufacturer lists a 5,000 mAh battery. Nothing specifies 33 W wired charging, compared with Samsung’s 25 W. Nothing says the 3a Lite can reach 50% in about 20 minutes under its test conditions; that is a manufacturer claim, not a matched comparison. The specification sheets do not establish which phone lasts longer in everyday use.
Both models are rated IP54. That rating is not a promise that either phone is waterproof or safe to immerse. Samsung describes limited dust and splash resistance and warns that resistance can diminish with wear.

Which phone suits which priorities?
- Choose the Galaxy A17 5G if Samsung’s longer stated major-Android-upgrade commitment or OIS on the main camera matters most to you.
- Consider the Phone (3a) Lite if you prioritize its listed adaptive 120 Hz display, 8 GB physical-RAM configuration, or higher maximum wired charging rate.
- Compare both carefully if price is decisive: check the local price for the same storage capacity, because the launch figures above are not a current like-for-like quote.
Neither specification sheet proves a winner for camera quality, sustained speed, or battery endurance. Those decisions require comparable real-world testing, so weigh the documented features against your own priorities rather than treating a single spec as a performance verdict.
