That is a notable home semiconductor experiment, but it is not the same as making a usable PC memory module: the reported work does not establish a module’s capacity, speed, data retention, reliability, or compatibility.
What the home RAM experiment demonstrated
Tom’s Hardware reported on April 22, 2026, that Dr. Semiconductor made a small DRAM cell array in a shed cleanroom. The cells reportedly measured 12 pF in capacitance. That figure is a reported cell measurement, not a measure of array capacity or operating speed, and the result has not been independently established by the sources cited here. Tom’s Hardware’s report said connecting ordinary wires to the tiny cells was impractical, so the creator tested them with micromanipulator probes.
The same report described connecting a larger array to a PC as a future goal. It did not establish that the demonstrated cells can already operate as computer memory.
How DRAM stores data
A DRAM cell stores a bit as electrical charge in a capacitor, with a transistor controlling access to that charge during reads and writes. Micron’s explanation of DRAM fabrication describes these basic components and the manufacturing processes used to form them. A cell array is a starting point, not a complete memory product: cells need to be arranged and connected, controlled and read reliably, and integrated into a chip and package.

- Compatible with STM32,Raspberry Pi,Arduino and so on.
What the reported home process involved
Tom’s Hardware described a sequence that began with silicon preparation, oxide growth, photoresist coating, UV mask exposure, and development. The account then covered etching, doping, annealing, further deposition and material-removal operations, metallization, and probe testing. This is a summary of the report’s account, not a complete recipe or independently audited replication guide.
The probe testing matters because it shows the difference between measuring tiny fabricated structures and attaching a finished module to a computer. The reported 12 pF capacitance is the specific performance-related result in the coverage; it should not be stretched into a claim about how many bits the array holds or how fast it can run.

How a home cell array differs from commercial RAM
| Aspect | Reported home demonstration | Micron’s industrial process account |
|---|---|---|
| Output | A small, probe-tested DRAM cell array; the report described a PC-connected larger array as future work (Tom’s Hardware, April 22, 2026). | Commercial DRAM chips made at manufacturing scale; Micron’s account describes hundreds of chips on a 300 mm wafer (Micron, publication date not stated). |
| Process evidence | A reported sequence of hands-on fabrication stages; the cited coverage does not establish a complete, independently validated process recipe (Tom’s Hardware, April 22, 2026). | More than a thousand process and measurement steps, with repeated patterning, alignment, specialized equipment, and ultra-pure materials (Micron, publication date not stated). |
| Performance evidence | 12 pF reported cell capacitance; capacity, retention, speed, error rate, reliability, and PC compatibility are not stated (Tom’s Hardware, April 22, 2026). | Micron’s account concerns its manufacturing process; it does not provide a directly comparable performance test of the home array. |
| Feature scale | Feature dimensions for the home array are not stated in the cited report. | Micron gives a 10–19 nm active-area half-pitch range for its 1α DRAM generation. The company notes that this is a generation-specific half-pitch measure, not a claim that every feature has that dimension (Micron, publication date not stated). |
The industrial numbers are context, not head-to-head measurements: Micron’s wafer size, process-step count, and 1α half-pitch do not describe the shed project. Micron also notes that node names are generation labels, which is why the specific measurement and its definition matter.
Why making dependable RAM is much harder
Cells must work together as an array
Fabricating a cell does not demonstrate that a large array can be selected, written, read, and refreshed reliably. Scaling up means connecting many structures and controlling their electrical behavior. The home report does not provide a bit count, retention time, operating frequency, error rate, yield, or long-term reliability result.

Layers have to align precisely
In Micron’s account, lithography defines patterns, multiple-patterning techniques create smaller features, and successive layers must align accurately. Transistors and capacitors are formed through repeated processing, with material and electrical properties that must be controlled. A defect introduced early can be buried under later layers, making it difficult to find or correct afterward. Micron’s article quotes its vice president of DRAM Process Integration, Thy Tran, describing fabrication as unlike carmaking because later layers can conceal earlier problems. Micron characterizes chip fabrication as “perhaps the most complicated human undertaking on the planet”; that is the company’s assessment, not an objective ranking.
Factories provide more than clean rooms
A shed cleanroom is not simply a smaller version of an industrial fab. Micron describes enormous controlled cleanrooms, specialized tools, ultra-pure materials, and dedicated manufacturing support. Repeatable process control, metrology, layer alignment, and the ability to detect defects across production are all part of the industrial challenge. Micron and Trinity Consultants’ semiconductor process overview, published in March 2025 as environmental permit material, describes broad fab process categories.

What a curious maker can conclude
The demonstration shows that home semiconductor work can reportedly reach the point of fabricating and electrically probing a small DRAM cell array. It does not show that a maker can produce a dependable, compatible PC memory module with the demonstrated setup. The project semiconductor.diy describes open-source guides for home semiconductor fabrication and identifies Matthew Hartensveld, PhD, as maintainer and creator of the Dr. Semiconductor channel. Its landing page establishes the project’s educational focus, not a complete or safety-certified procedure for reproducing this DRAM experiment.
