Caelestia Shell does not have a documented, tested Ubuntu or Zorin OS installation recipe. Its project documentation describes installation for Arch Linux, Nix, and a manual source build, but does not provide an Ubuntu/Zorin compatibility matrix. You can investigate an adapted installation, but treat it as unverified for your specific release until you have checked its package versions and tested the complete setup.

What Caelestia Shell is—and what it is not

Caelestia Shell is a desktop shell built around Quickshell widgets and the Hyprland window manager. It is not the same thing as the broader Caelestia dotfiles project, which encompasses dotfiles, the shell, and a CLI. Installing the shell alone should not be described as installing the complete Caelestia desktop setup.

The shell project’s current repository instructions describe Arch Linux, Nix, and manual source installation: Caelestia Shell README. The broader project’s instructions are separate: Caelestia dotfiles README.

What the documented installation routes cover

Route What the project documents Ubuntu/Zorin status
Arch Linux An Arch package named caelestia-shell, plus a bleeding-edge caelestia-shell-git option. The README recommends the stable package for regular users and warns that the git package may be unstable. These are Arch package instructions, not Ubuntu package names or commands.
Nix A route to run the shell through Nix. The README cautions that the default Nix package does not enable the CLI, which is required for full functionality. The documentation does not establish Ubuntu or Zorin compatibility through this route.
Manual source build Clone the shell repository, configure and build with CMake and Ninja, then install. The documented dependency list includes the git version of Quickshell and system, Qt, font, and build dependencies. No Debian/Ubuntu package translation or release-specific version check is supplied.

Details for these approaches are in the shell project’s installation instructions. The presence of a manual build route does not establish that the needed versions are available on every Ubuntu-derived distribution.

Why an Ubuntu-derived distro needs release-specific checks

Ubuntu and Zorin OS use related foundations, but “Ubuntu-based” is not a compatibility guarantee. The project documentation reviewed does not identify a supported Ubuntu or Zorin release, give a tested command sequence for either, or provide a compatibility matrix. Zorin’s general system requirements page does not verify Caelestia compatibility.

For the manual route, upstream lists caelestia-cli, git Quickshell, ddcutil, brightnessctl, libcava, NetworkManager, lm-sensors, Fish, Aubio, PipeWire, glibc, Qt 6 components, font packages, Swappy, libqalculate, Bash, CMake, and Ninja. That list is not a set of Ubuntu package names: package names and available versions must be checked in the repositories for the exact target release. In particular, verify whether the required Quickshell git version and the needed Qt and Hyprland components are available before treating a dependency translation as viable.

How to evaluate an adapted installation

  1. Identify the exact target. Record the Ubuntu or Zorin OS release you intend to use. A result for one release would not, by itself, establish compatibility with another.
  2. Choose the scope. Decide whether you want only the shell or the larger dotfiles setup, including its CLI and selected components. The dotfiles README describes a distinct installation and configuration process; its legacy install.fish script has been removed in favor of the CLI’s install command.
  3. Map and verify dependencies. For each upstream dependency, check the target release’s package name, available version, and whether it is a runtime or build requirement. Do not assume Arch package names or commands translate directly.
  4. Check Quickshell’s version requirement. The manual shell instructions specify the git version of Quickshell. Confirm that the version you can obtain satisfies that requirement; a similarly named package is not proof of version compatibility.
  5. Test the whole workflow on that release. Until the commands and resulting setup have been tested on the exact target, label the procedure unverified. A successful build alone would not demonstrate that all requested shell features or the broader dotfiles configuration work.

Shell installation versus the full Caelestia setup

If your goal is the shell, follow the shell repository’s instructions as the scope reference. If you want the full ecosystem, account separately for the dotfiles project’s CLI, component selection, package installation, and configuration copying. Upstream describes its Arch installation using the CLI; its manual instructions ask users to select components and their corresponding packages. Neither set of instructions establishes an Ubuntu or Zorin procedure.
