Samsung says not to manually defrost its ice makers. The ice maker has an automatic defrost function; if it is frozen over or that function is not working, Samsung says it needs service. So if you’re asking, “How do I defrost my Samsung ice maker?”, don’t use a hair dryer, pry at the assembly, or force out a stuck bucket.
First, identify what is frozen
A removable bucket with clumped ice is different from a sheet of ice covering the ice-maker assembly. Samsung Support US says a stuck bucket is likely frozen and advises against forcing it out or using a hair dryer. If ice has formed over the ice maker itself, Samsung directs owners to contact its Support Center rather than attempting to thaw the assembly at home. Samsung Support US: Ice maker is frozen over
- Clumped ice in the bucket: Do not force the bucket free. Follow your model’s manual for safe bucket handling; if it is stuck, contact Samsung support or service.
- A sheet of ice over the ice maker: Treat this as a service issue, not a routine defrosting task.
- No ice, but no visible ice buildup: Check the operating conditions below before trying a model-appropriate reset.
Check basic operating conditions before resetting
Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting guidance says the freezer needs to be at 0°F or lower for ice production. Confirm that the ice maker is switched on, the bucket is correctly seated, and the freezer door closes properly. The bucket should contain only ice, not other items that could interfere with its operation. Controls and bucket handling vary by refrigerator, so consult the user manual for your exact model. - Check the freezer temperature setting and allow the compartment to reach the required temperature.
- Verify the ice maker is on using the control specified in your manual.
- Make sure the bucket is seated as designed and the door can close completely.
- Remove non-ice items from the bucket.
Reset the ice maker only as your model allows
Samsung’s U.S. guide describes a Test-button reset, but button location and access differ by model and by whether the ice maker is in the refrigerator compartment or freezer door. - Find the Test button using your model’s manual. Press and hold it until you hear a chime.
- If there is no chime and the ice maker does not move, power-cycle the refrigerator for two minutes, then try the test again.
- Allow the test to finish. Samsung says it takes about six minutes for an ice maker in the refrigerator compartment or about 30 seconds for one in the freezer compartment.
- If you removed a bucket or cover according to the manual, reinstall it as directed; Samsung notes that a bucket may need to click into place.
Do not keep pressing Test after the tray contains ice or water: repeated tests can cause an overflow or jam. These are Samsung Support US instructions, not a universal procedure or guarantee for every model. If the correct test produces no response, stop and contact Samsung support or service.
Allow for recovery time and check the water supply if relevant
Samsung Canada says that, when water pressure is the issue, the supply should be at least 20 psi. Its troubleshooting guidance also says ice production may begin within eight hours but can take as long as 24 hours to return to normal after troubleshooting. When to contact Samsung service
Samsung Support US’s warning is direct: “Do not attempt to defrost your ice maker, as this may damage the ice maker. Your ice maker has an automatic defrost function. If this is not working, then your ice maker needs service.” If the assembly is covered by a sheet of ice, the bucket is stuck, ice buildup returns, or the ice maker does not respond to a correctly performed model-specific reset, contact Samsung support or service rather than attempting to thaw or dismantle it. Samsung also mentions a firmware update for Family Hub and other SmartThings-capable refrigerators that may help prevent and possibly resolve frozen-over ice-maker issues. It is not a guaranteed fix; use Samsung’s model-specific support instructions or ask support whether an update applies to your refrigerator.
