This list weighs critical reception, staying power, how well each game suits the Switch, and the range of experiences it offers. It includes major Nintendo releases alongside a standout third-party game, and treats sales as a sign of reach—not a measure of quality.
How this ranking works
The order balances four things: critical regard, lasting popularity, a distinctive fit for the Switch, and the value each game adds to a varied library. Those measures do not produce one universal winner. Metacritic’s displayed Switch all-time list places Super Mario Odyssey second and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom fourth, while GamesRadar+ ranks Tears of the Kingdom first in its own guide. The lists reflect different methods and dates, not a settled answer. See Metacritic’s Switch rankings and GamesRadar+’s selection.

The 10 greatest Nintendo Switch games
1. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Tears of the Kingdom earns the top spot for making exploration unusually inventive. Its construction mechanics let players devise ways to travel, solve problems, and approach encounters, making experimentation part of the adventure rather than a diversion from it. It is the strongest choice here for players who want a sprawling solo game that rewards curiosity and creative problem-solving.
2. Super Mario Odyssey
Super Mario Odyssey is a polished 3D platformer built around exploration, movement, and the surprise of discovering what a world allows Mario to do. Its focused stages and playful transformations make it an excellent pick for players who want an expressive solo adventure without committing to a huge open world. Its high placement on Metacritic’s displayed Switch list is one signal of its critical reputation, not a definitive verdict on every player’s taste.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
3. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the list’s most versatile social game: it works for quick races, family play, and competitive sessions, while remaining enjoyable alone. GamesRadar+ notes that as many as eight people can play locally, and that two people can play anywhere using one console. Nintendo’s FY2026 report lists 71.08 million Switch sales through its March 2026 reporting period, making it the system’s best-selling first-party title in that report. That scale demonstrates reach, not superiority over less widely purchased games.
4. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Breath of the Wild established the open-ended approach that its sequel expands. Its appeal is the pleasure of setting out with a direction—or without one—and learning a landscape through exploration. Choose it if you want the original experience and the satisfaction of discovering its systems on their own terms, rather than starting with the sequel’s more elaborate construction options.
Rank #2
- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
5. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Animal Crossing: New Horizons offers a gentler, ongoing routine: build and shape an island, collect, decorate, and spend time with its residents. Its relaxed pace and social dimension make it a natural alternative to action-heavy adventures. Nintendo’s FY2026 report records 49.91 million Switch sales through its March 2026 reporting period. As with any sales figure, that is context for the game’s popularity, not a quality score.
6. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate turns a broad cast of game characters into a fast, chaotic fighting game that suits both couch competition and solo play. It is an especially strong pick if you want a game that can bring different skill levels together or support repeated matchups. Nintendo Life’s guide reported 37.44 million sales as of December 2025; Nintendo’s cited FY2026 sales table does not provide a comparable figure for this title.

7. Metroid Dread
Metroid Dread brings exploration, combat, and tension together in a compact 2D adventure. Its interconnected map encourages backtracking with new abilities, while dangerous encounters keep the journey urgent. It belongs on this list because the Switch library is not only about sprawling worlds and multiplayer hits: this is a focused, demanding solo game for players who enjoy finding their way through a hostile place.
8. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Fire Emblem: Three Houses combines turn-based tactical battles with a school setting and character relationships that shape the experience. The result is a long-form strategy game with a strong narrative focus, suited to players who like planning battles as much as getting to know a cast. It offers a very different kind of commitment from the quick sessions of Mario Kart or Smash.
Rank #4
- Journey through space in two Super Mario adventures, now improved for the Nintendo Switch system!
- Travel the stars with enhanced resolution, improved UI, and additional content
- Learn more about the Lumas from additional Storybook chapters, groove to a bit of additional music
- Get additional Health and fall recovery in Assist Mode
- Join Rosalina and the Lumas to restore the Comet Observatory and rescue Princess Peach in Super Mario Galaxy.
9. Pikmin 4
Pikmin 4 is an approachable strategy adventure about directing small plantlike helpers through exploration and puzzle-solving. It rewards observation and planning without relying on the pace or combat intensity of an action game. Its distinctive scale and systems give the ranking another kind of solo experience, particularly for players who want strategy that feels tactile and exploratory.
10. Hades
Hades is a standout third-party choice: a fast action game built around repeated attempts to escape the underworld, with story and character moments unfolding along the way. Its run-based structure suits portable sessions, while each attempt gives players another chance to improve. Including it recognizes that a great Switch library is not defined only by Nintendo’s own releases.

Which is best, BOTW or TOTK?
It depends on what you want from the adventure. Pick Breath of the Wild if you want the original open-ended exploration experience and the pleasure of uncovering its world without the sequel’s expanded creative tools. Pick Tears of the Kingdom if building and experimenting with ways to move, solve problems, and engage with the world is a major part of the appeal. GamesRadar+ places the sequel first in its list; Metacritic’s displayed all-time Switch ranking places it below Breath of the Wild’s fellow top titles. Neither ordering can decide which game will suit you better.
What sales figures can—and cannot—tell you
Nintendo’s official FY2026 report lists Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at 71.08 million and Animal Crossing: New Horizons at 49.91 million Switch sales through its March 2026 reporting period. Nintendo reports the figures in units of ten thousand. These numbers show the reach of two major first-party releases; they do not rank their quality or account for differences in genre, release timing, or the kinds of players each game serves. Nintendo Life’s earlier guide gives a separate snapshot as of December 2025: 70.59 million for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, 49.32 million for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and 37.44 million for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. For the later figures, consult Nintendo’s first-party software sales table; the earlier snapshot appears in Nintendo Life’s 2026 guide.
