To improve how an Xbox Series X racing game feels, first find out whether the hitch happens in one game or across several, then check that game’s performance mode and the console-to-display signal path. A 120 Hz setting does not make every game run at 120 frames per second, and VRR can smooth some uneven frame delivery without fixing a game-side performance problem.

First, work out where the stutter occurs

Before changing settings, note the exact conditions. Does it happen in one racing game or several? Is it visible in menus, replays, solo events, or only online? Record the game version or update, selected mode, track or event, and how long it takes to appear. Try to reproduce the issue in the same section after each change.

If the problem is limited to one title, mode, or update, that points toward a game-specific issue, but it does not prove the cause. Forza Motorsport players have reported frame-rate drops and stuttering under particular versions and modes; those reports describe individual experiences, not a universal Series X defect or a verified fix. The old Forza forum pages now redirect. Forza forum search results and Forza Support are the relevant places to check for current information.

Compare the game’s available modes

If the title offers a performance-oriented mode, compare it with its quality-oriented mode in the same repeatable section. The precise options and trade-offs vary by game; a performance mode may prioritize smoother rendering over image detail, but it is not a guaranteed cure for every hitch.

Keep refresh rate and game frame rate distinct. Xbox Series X supports display output up to 120 Hz, but the game and its selected mode determine how many frames it renders. Microsoft describes 120 FPS as an option developers can build into games, not a setting that makes every title run at that rate. Xbox’s explanation of Series X latency and display features covers the difference.

Check the Xbox-to-display connection

  1. Check the display’s supported features. On Xbox, open Settings > General > TV & Display Options > 4K TV details. Then consult the TV or monitor manual to confirm which input supports the resolution, refresh rate, and HDMI features you want. Some displays support 120 Hz only on particular ports or at particular resolutions.
  2. Update the display firmware. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your model; firmware and menu wording vary.
  3. Connect the console directly to the display for a test. Temporarily remove an AV receiver, HDMI switch, or other passthrough device from the chain. Microsoft recommends a direct connection when troubleshooting display capability issues.
  4. Use the included cable first. Series X comes with an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Test with it before considering a replacement. A new cable is relevant if the supplied one is missing, damaged, or the signal path is suspect—not as a general fix for game-specific frame drops.

If you restore a receiver or switch after testing, check that every device and cable in the chain supports the signal you intend to use. Microsoft’s 4K TV setup guidance explains the console-side checks; use the display manufacturer’s manual for model-specific input limits.

Test VRR, refresh rate, and ALLM one at a time

If your display supports variable refresh rate (VRR), compare the same scene with VRR on and off. VRR lets a compatible display adjust its refresh timing to the frames a game delivers, which can reduce tearing and make uneven delivery look smoother. It does not increase the game’s frame rate or repair its rendering or frame pacing. Microsoft says VRR presents missed frames with the lowest possible latency; it also notes that 120 Hz VRR TVs typically have broad timing windows for tear-free performance above 40 FPS. Those are capability descriptions, not a promise that a particular game will feel smooth.

Change one setting at a time so you can tell what affected the result. If enabling VRR causes visual corruption, turn it off. If you are troubleshooting a display problem, Microsoft also suggests trying a 60 Hz refresh setting.

Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) is different: on a capable TV, it can automatically switch the display into Game Mode to reduce display latency. It addresses how quickly the display responds, not a game’s frame-rate drops. Series X can invoke ALLM on compatible TVs.
