For money you need to spend or keep as savings, a qualifying deposit at an FDIC-insured bank or federally insured credit union generally offers a clearer protection framework than cash or crypto held with a crypto exchange. Crypto on an exchange is not thereby a bank deposit, and crypto assets are not covered by FDIC deposit insurance. The right comparison depends on what you actually hold, which legal entity holds or owes it, and what happens if that entity fails.

This is a U.S.-focused general guide, not individualized financial advice. Insurance rules and account arrangements differ by country and product.

Bank deposits and exchange balances are different products

A bank deposit is a claim against a depository institution when the account qualifies as a deposit. Crypto in an exchange account is a crypto asset held through a custodian or service provider. An exchange account may also display cash or offer other products, so the app balance alone does not tell you what you own or what protections apply.

Start by identifying the legal counterparty and the asset: Is it a deposit at an insured bank, crypto held by an exchange, or a separate product such as a crypto interest account? The answer determines the relevant risks and protections. The FDIC’s deposit insurance guidance explains the scope of federal deposit insurance; it does not make a crypto exchange an insured bank.

What protections apply to each choice?

Decision point Qualifying bank or credit-union deposit Crypto held at an exchange
What you hold A deposit claim against the institution, if the product qualifies as a deposit. Usually crypto assets held through a custodian, though an account may also contain cash or another product. Check the account terms and legal counterparty.
Insurance Eligible deposits at an insured bank may receive FDIC protection; eligible deposits at a federally insured credit union may receive NCUA protection. Limits and ownership rules apply. Crypto assets are not FDIC-insured. Do not assume a bank relationship or a balance displayed in an app means the exchange’s customers have insured deposits. Check the specific cash arrangement and account terms.
Failure and access risks Deposit insurance addresses failure of an insured institution within its scope. Account access still depends on the institution’s procedures and terms. The custodian or platform may fail, shut down, be hacked, or interrupt withdrawals. You may lose access to assets or face uncertainty about recovery.
Yield Compare the terms of the specific deposit product; no rate comparison is established here. Crypto interest may involve lending or other investment activity. It is not equivalent to interest on an insured savings deposit.
Fees and terms Review the institution’s current account disclosures. Review trading and transfer fees, custody and withdrawal terms, asset-use policies, privacy terms, and account-closure rules.

FDIC and NCUA protection is not a guarantee against investment losses, and it does not cover every product sold through a financial app. Verify that the institution and account qualify, and check applicable coverage limits and ownership rules in the relevant agency’s current guidance: FDIC and NCUA.

What happens if a crypto exchange fails?

An exchange is not automatically a bank. When you leave crypto in exchange custody, the provider controls the private-key access used to move it. If the provider fails, shuts down, is hacked, or becomes bankrupt, you may lose access to the assets; the outcome depends on the facts and legal arrangements. The SEC’s December 12, 2025 custody bulletin describes these risks. It is SEC staff guidance, not a rule or binding Commission statement.

Do not treat proof of reserves as a complete audit or proof that customer assets are safely backed. The SEC staff alert notes that these methods may be point-in-time, discretionary in scope and assurance, and may not establish the full financial condition of a provider. A snapshot cannot by itself answer what liabilities exist or what a customer could recover after failure.

Crypto interest accounts are not savings accounts

A crypto interest account may use deposited crypto in lending or other investment activity. That creates market, company-failure, fraud, regulatory, and technical risks that differ from those of a qualifying insured deposit. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy’s February 14, 2022 bulletin warns that crypto interest accounts do not provide the same protections as bank or credit-union deposits and that crypto sent to those companies is not currently insured. The bulletin reflects staff views and is not a binding Commission statement.

Before using such an account, read how the provider may use your assets, who owes you repayment, whether withdrawals can be paused, and what the terms say about insolvency. A quoted yield does not make the balance an insured deposit.

Exchange custody or self-custody?

A crypto wallet does not store coins themselves; it stores or manages private keys that authorize transactions. A public key can be used to receive assets, while the private key authorizes spending. The SEC’s custody guidance explains the trade-off: third-party custody leaves access management with a provider; self-custody puts key management and recovery on you.

Third-party custody

Keeping crypto on an exchange may be more convenient for trading, but it adds dependence on the provider’s systems, security, withdrawal policies, and financial and legal arrangements. Ask how assets are stored, whether subcontractors are involved, whether assets can be lent or rehypothecated, how customer assets are segregated or commingled, what insurance actually covers, and what fees and recovery procedures apply.

Self-custody

Self-custody gives you control of the keys, but also sole responsibility for securing them and any recovery phrase. Losing the private key can permanently remove access to the assets. Hot wallets are internet-connected and convenient but more exposed to cyberthreats. Cold wallets are typically physical devices kept offline and generally less exposed to online threats, yet a device can be lost, damaged, or stolen. A hardware wallet is a tool for someone who has chosen self-custody; it does not provide deposit insurance or make key management risk-free.

A practical way to decide

  1. Separate spending and savings from investment exposure. Identify the money you need for bills, emergencies, or a near-term goal before considering crypto exposure.
  2. Name the asset and legal counterparty. Confirm whether the balance is a qualifying bank or credit-union deposit, exchange-held crypto, exchange cash, or an interest-bearing product.
  3. Verify protection rather than inferring it from the app. Check which institution holds a cash deposit, whether it is insured, whether the account is eligible, and what limits and ownership rules apply.
  4. Read custody and withdrawal terms. For exchange assets, check who controls the keys, when withdrawals may be restricted, how the provider may use assets, and what happens if it closes or becomes insolvent.
  5. Match custody to your capabilities. If self-custody is your choice, consider whether you can securely store and recover keys. If you use a provider, assess its custody and security terms without assuming they eliminate risk.
  6. Compare costs and time horizon. Include account, custody, trading, transfer, and withdrawal fees. Do not compare a short-term insured deposit and a volatile crypto asset as though they were interchangeable cash.

Keep brokerage protection separate

SIPC is distinct from FDIC deposit insurance. SIPC may help replace missing customer property at a member brokerage subject to its rules and limits; it does not insure bank deposits, protect against market declines, or serve as general crypto insurance. Do not infer that crypto held on an exchange is covered by SIPC merely because a company also offers brokerage services. For current details, consult SIPC’s explanation of what it protects.
