Soreness—usually delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS)—is a temporary symptom, not a score for progress. To judge your training, compare your exercise performance, technique, range of motion, and ability to recover across multiple sessions.
Is being sore after leg day a sign your glute workout worked?
Not by itself. DOMS often follows unfamiliar or demanding exercise, but it does not show how much your muscles adapted. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) says DOMS typically starts 12–24 hours after exercise and often reaches its greatest intensity 24–72 hours later. Pain that begins during a lift is different from this delayed pattern. ACSM’s DOMS information sheet explains the typical timing and causes.
A small study of novice trainees found short-term hypertrophy measures without a significant change in soreness. That supports a narrow but useful point: soreness is not required for muscle growth. It does not guarantee that every workout with little soreness will produce growth. The study on hypertrophy without eccentric muscle damage is specific to its participants and conditions, not a universal test for glute training.
What signs are more useful than soreness?
Look for gradual, repeatable progress across sessions rather than a dramatic feeling after one workout. The American College of Sports Medicine’s 2026 overview synthesized 137 systematic reviews involving more than 30,000 participants and reported that resistance training improved strength, muscle size, power, endurance, and other functional outcomes in healthy adults. It supports progressive resistance training broadly; it does not prescribe one exact glute routine for everyone. Read the ACSM 2026 resistance-training overview.

- Recoverability: Can you return to planned training without soreness repeatedly overwhelming ordinary movement?
- Specificity: Are you tracking exercises that are actually part of your glute-training plan?
Use a simple logbook to record the exercise, load, repetitions, and any notes about technique or range of motion. Compare like with like: a heavier set performed with a much shorter range is not clear evidence of progress. The ACSM overview found that higher training volumes at or above 10 sets per week enhanced hypertrophy in the reviewed evidence, but that population-level finding is not a mandatory weekly target for every person’s glutes.
How to tell whether soreness is getting in the way
Some delayed soreness after a new or harder session can happen. If ordinary soreness repeatedly disrupts normal movement or makes your next planned session impractical, scale back the unfamiliar workload and build up gradually. Do not add sets or make workouts more punishing just to chase soreness. The ACSM emphasizes sustainable regular activity; its 2026 announcement notes, “If a program is too demanding to maintain, it loses its effectiveness.”

Sharp, sudden, worsening, or persistent pain should not simply be labeled DOMS. Stop the exercise that provokes it and seek appropriate clinical guidance when symptoms are concerning. The cited sources do not establish a universal soreness or pain threshold, and this article is not a way to diagnose an injury.
Can glute workouts work if you are not sore?
Yes. Lack of soreness does not prove that a session was ineffective. A more useful check is whether, over multiple sessions, you can maintain good movement quality and gradually improve a repeatable measure such as repetitions or load, while recovering well enough to keep training. This is a practical application of broad resistance-training evidence, not a glute-specific diagnostic test.

Do stretching or recovery treatments prevent DOMS?
Stretching after exercise is not a reliable soreness-prevention promise. A 2021 systematic review found no statistically supported benefit of post-exercise stretching over passive recovery for DOMS at 24, 48, or 72 hours, or for strength recovery. The authors described the evidence as scarce and heterogeneous, with very low confidence. See the 2021 review of post-exercise stretching.
A separate 2021 review found low-quality evidence that several physical-therapy interventions may reduce DOMS-related pain. Pain relief, however, does not measure whether a workout produced strength or muscle gains, and these findings do not establish that a consumer recovery product or device is necessary. See the review of DOMS interventions.

What equipment do you need for an effective home glute workout?
No special device is established as necessary to judge whether training is progressing. ACSM lists resistance bands among suitable strength-training equipment, alongside body weight, free weights, medicine balls, and machines. Bands are an optional way to add resistance at home, not a requirement; choose exercises and resistance that let you use consistent, controlled technique.
