Start with the exact machine and your intended use
“Retro computer” covers machines with very different keyboards, video connections, storage interfaces, and software requirements. Compatibility can vary between models and revisions, so identify the precise computer before shopping for cables, adapters, drives, or replacement parts.
Decide whether your priority is a period-correct collectible, a restorable project, or a computer you can use regularly. Those goals affect how you should weigh originality, completeness, demonstrated operation, and the work needed to connect modern peripherals. For active use, name the software and media you want to run; for collecting, note which original parts and accessories matter to you.
Check the keyboard in a demonstration
Test the keys, not just the appearance
Ask the seller to show the keyboard working and to press every key, including modifiers and less-used keys. A general statement that the machine “powers on” does not establish that the keyboard is fully functional. Use the machine’s manual or service documentation for model-specific tests; layouts and keyboard behavior are not uniform across retro computers.

Inspect condition and layout
Check that the layout suits the software and use you have in mind. Look for missing, cracked, loose, or visibly mismatched keycaps, and inspect the keyboard connector and cable for visible damage or modification. If a key or cable appears faulty, establish the exact model and revision before assuming a replacement part or repair will fit. Ask for photos if you cannot inspect the machine in person.
Match video output to a display before buying cables
Identify the port and the signal
First establish what physical video port the computer has and what output mode it uses. Then check whether your intended display accepts that signal directly or whether a cable, converter, or scaler is needed. The connector alone may not tell you enough: consult the computer’s manual and check the converter’s and display’s specifications before purchasing anything.
Verify the result with the actual setup
Ask for a live display demonstration where possible. If the picture is unstable or the display reports an unsupported mode, check the computer’s exact output timing and scan mode against the converter and display documentation. A converter that fits the port is not necessarily compatible with the signal, and a signal-compatible converter still has to work with the display.

For a machine you cannot test with your own screen, request clear photos of the video port and the computer’s model label, plus the output mode and any converter used in the seller’s demonstration. Use those details to verify a model-appropriate video path before treating a cable or converter as a known cost.

Choose storage for the machine and your media
Decide whether you value originality or convenience more
Original disks and drives may matter for an authentic restoration or for reading media you already own. An adapter or emulator may offer a more convenient workflow, but it can change the character of a period-correct setup and does not guarantee that the computer can use it. SellMyRetro Blog’s editorial advice in Choosing Retro Computer Storage Properly (2026) puts the tradeoff this way: “A cheap drive or card reader is no bargain if it cannot read the disks you own, needs an unobtainable adaptor, or changes the character of a period-correct restoration.”
Verify the whole storage path
Before buying a drive, adapter, card reader, or floppy emulator, check all of the following against documentation for the exact computer model and revision:

- Interface: Determine what storage connection the machine and its controller support. IDE, SCSI, and proprietary interfaces are examples, not interchangeable options.
- Power: Confirm that the device and adapter meet the computer’s power requirements.
- Media and format: Check that the drive or device can handle the media you plan to use and that the computer can read it.
- Controller and ROM limits: Verify any controller, firmware, or ROM requirements that affect supported devices or capacities.
- Setup: Check whether drivers, partitioning, or other software configuration is required and whether you can perform it with the setup you have.
- Parts and availability: Establish whether the necessary adapter or replacement media can actually be obtained for this machine.
CompactFlash- or SD-to-IDE adapters, SCSI devices, proprietary-interface solutions, and USB floppy emulators can be useful in particular setups. Their mention is not a compatibility guarantee: verify the interface, controller, power, and software setup for the machine you are considering.
Prove that the included software works on this configuration
Ask exactly which operating system, applications, and media are included. Then ask the seller to demonstrate the stated configuration booting and running the software you care about, if that can be done. A boot demonstration establishes more than a parts list, but it does not by itself prove that every included program or disk works.

Request evidence before you commit
For an in-person purchase, use the demonstration to inspect the machine directly. For a remote purchase, ask for current photos and video that identify the specific unit rather than relying only on generic product images.
- Photos of the model and revision labels, ports, keyboard, cable, and included peripherals.
- A keyboard demonstration that includes modifiers and less-used keys.
- A display demonstration, with the video connection or converter identified.
- A boot demonstration showing the storage setup and the software you intend to use.
- Any available manuals, service documentation, repair history, and information about prior modifications.
A seller’s description of a restored computer can help explain what is bundled, but it is not an independent compatibility test. Treat claims about restoration or operation as claims to verify with the unit’s documentation and demonstrations.

If you are choosing between real machines, compare their exact configurations rather than ranking them by brand or family name alone. The right balance depends on whether you are collecting, restoring, or planning regular use.

| Software | Which operating system, programs, and media are included? Was the intended software demonstrated on this configuration? |
| Completeness and originality | Are the original parts and accessories important to your goal? What is included, and what has been changed? |
| Documentation and service | Are model-specific manuals or service records available? Is the repair history known? |
| Practical ownership | What adapters, repairs, or model-specific parts would you need, and can you obtain them? |
For collecting, originality and completeness may carry more weight. For regular use, give more weight to demonstrated operation, documentation, a workable display and storage path, and parts or adapters you can obtain. A project machine can still be a good choice if the known faults and required work fit your plans.
Make the decision from verified facts
Before agreeing to buy, make sure you can identify the exact machine, explain how you will connect it to a display, describe how you will access the storage and software you need, and distinguish what has been demonstrated from what remains unverified. If any of those answers depends on a model-specific cable, adapter, drive, or replacement part, confirm compatibility against documentation for that model before counting on it.
