You can make a small baking soda and vinegar rocket with a snap-lid film canister, but launch it outdoors, wear safety goggles, and move away as soon as you set it down. The safest approach is to follow one complete set of instructions rather than mixing quantities or steps from different activities.

What you need

  • A small plastic film canister with a tight-fitting snap lid. The Lunar and Planetary Institute specifies a 35 mm canister with a cap that fits inside the rim.
  • Baking soda, vinegar, and a small amount of water.
  • Measuring spoons, a spoon, and wax paper or a small bowl.
  • Safety goggles.
  • Optional: cardstock or construction paper, tape, scissors, and decorations for a rocket body. Keep decorations clear of the lid seam.

See the Lunar and Planetary Institute’s Rocket Launch activity for its canister specification.

How to make the rocket using the film-canister method

These steps follow the Science Buddies activity. Its quantities are a starting setup for that method, not a universal ratio for every canister.

  1. Put 1 teaspoon of baking soda on wax paper or in a small bowl. Mix in 1/8 teaspoon of water to dampen it.
  2. Turn the canister lid upside down and pack the damp baking soda into its depression. Keep the snapping rim clear so the lid can seal.
  3. Add vinegar to the canister a teaspoon at a time. Stop before the vinegar can touch the baking soda when the lid is attached. Science Buddies says this may be about 5 teaspoons, depending on the canister.
  4. Take the setup outdoors to an open area. Put on safety goggles. On a flat, hard surface, snap the lid onto the canister, turn it lid-down, set it down, and move away immediately. Wait for the reaction; do not aim it toward people or breakable objects.
  5. After the launch, rinse and dry the canister and lid.

Keep the launch area safe

  • Launch outdoors in an open area on a flat, hard surface. Science Buddies says to stay at least six feet from buildings in its procedure; its materials list instead says at least two meters from buildings.
  • Wear safety goggles. The Lunar and Planetary Institute activity also tells bystanders to remain at least 10 feet from the launch area. That is the activity’s stated precaution, not a general regulatory clearance standard.
  • Keep people and breakables out of the rocket’s path, and move away promptly after setting it down.
  • Use the small canister and snap lid specified by the activity. Do not substitute a rigid pressure vessel: the described demonstration relies on pressure releasing the snap lid.

Why the canister launches

Baking soda and vinegar react to produce water and carbon dioxide. In the closed canister, carbon dioxide accumulates and pressure rises until the lid pops open. Gas escapes through the open end and pushes the canister in the opposite direction, demonstrating thrust. It is not a miniature version of the fuels or hardware used by orbital launch vehicles.

Why two published methods should not be combined

The steps above use damp baking soda packed into the lid and vinegar added to the canister. The Lunar and Planetary Institute describes a different sequence: quickly combine 1 teaspoon of vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in the canister, snap it shut, set the rocket upright, and step back. It also specifies eye protection for the launcher and a 10-foot distance for bystanders. Because the quantities and orientation differ, follow one activity from start to finish rather than combining their instructions.

What to expect from a launch

Launch behavior varies with the canister and how well it seals, so a result from one setup is not a guarantee for another. Science Buddies reports heights of roughly 6 feet for a canister nearly full of vinegar and nearly 15 feet for its least-vinegar trial. Those are observations from that publisher’s trials; the activity page does not state a year, and they are not independently verified outcomes or promised home-launch heights.

How to explore the variables

Change one factor at a time, keep the rest of the setup as consistent as possible, record what happens, and repeat trials when practical. Neither source establishes a universally best mixture for every canister.

  • Ingredient amounts: Science Buddies suggests varying the vinegar while keeping baking soda at 1 teaspoon, then trying different amounts of baking soda. You can record launch height and delay.
  • Added mass: The Lunar and Planetary Institute suggests comparing rocket mass. Its activity expects height to decrease as mass increases when thrust is held similar.
  • Rocket shape: Try a paper nose cone or fins and compare flight behavior. Keep additions clear of the lid seam.
