Matter devices do not all get firmware updates the same way. A compatible device can use Matter’s shared over-the-air (OTA) system, in which the device requests an update from a platform service or hub. But Matter support alone does not guarantee OTA support, and a maker may use its own update method instead.

Apple documents an Apple home hub as the OTA Provider; Google documents its Matter hubs as Providers and supports distribution through Google Home Developer Console or the Connectivity Standards Alliance Distributed Compliance Ledger (DCL). Alexa update delivery has additional developer requirements, including DCL publication and regression testing for each firmware release. None of those developer workflows guarantees a consumer-facing update control for every accessory.

How Matter firmware updates work

In Matter’s OTA model, the accessory is the OTA Requestor and a hub or service is the OTA Provider. The device periodically checks for available software. If an eligible update is offered, the accessory requests and downloads it, then validates and installs it according to its implementation. Google’s developer guide describes this polling model and says the device must validate the payload signature; the developer is responsible for signing the firmware. Google’s OTA overview

The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) makes an important distinction: a Matter device can use OTA functionality in the Matter specification or use its own software-update method. Matter can carry feature improvements and security patches, but the Matter badge by itself does not establish which route a particular model uses. CSA Matter FAQs

Aqara Smart Home Hub M3 for Advanced Automation, Matter Controller, IR
  • [Multi-Protocol Hub with Matter Bridge] The M3 is a versatile hub supporting Aqara Zigbee and Thread devices. It integrates third-party devices into the Aqara Home app. Supports advanced Matter bridge functionality, enabling Aqara-exclusive scenes and signals to sync with Matter ecosystems such as Home Assistant for seamless integration. Supports up to 127 Aqara Zigbee devices (** Not third-party Zigbee devices) and 127 Thread devices (Repeaters are needed).
  • [Edge Compatibilities and Local Automations] The M3 serves as an Edge Hub, prioritizing local control and automation. Upon integration, it supersedes existing Aqara hubs, shifting the automations among them to local operation (Some cloud-based notifications still require internet). Upgrade-friendly, it supports migrating Zigbee devices from older Aqara hubs.
  • [Smart IR Blaster with Feedback and Learning] The 360°IR blaster not only sends commands but also provides accurate status updates by detecting traditional remote use. It connects IR air conditioning units to Matter, functioning as an AC thermostat when paired with an Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor. (Note: Only one AC device can be exposed to Matter. Functionality may vary based on the Matter integration app. For Apple Home exposure, use Matter integration instead of HomeKit.)
  • [Optimal Wired and Wireless Connectivity] Offering both wired and wireless solutions, the smart home hub M3 provides dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz) with advanced WPA3 security, and a Power over Ethernet (PoE) port. The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (2A USB power adapter is not included. ) . Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M3 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
  • [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.

Updates move forward by version number

A Requestor selects an update with a numerically higher version than the one installed; if several newer images are available, Google says it receives the highest version rather than applying every intervening release. An OTA image cannot simply be deleted, replaced, or rolled back in Google’s documented workflow. If a release needs to restore earlier behavior, the manufacturer publishes a new image with a higher version number. The Matter Core Specification R1.3 describes this functional rollback approach as well. Google’s OTA overview · Matter Core Specification R1.3

How the update path differs by ecosystem

Ecosystem Documented OTA Provider or route Manufacturer-side publication and conditions What this does not guarantee
Apple Home Apple’s guide describes the primary Apple home hub—such as a connected Apple TV, HomePod, or HomePod mini—as the Provider. The accessory requests its firmware binary from that hub. The developer creates a model and model version in the DCL and enters the firmware OTA URL. Apple’s developer guide does not establish a universal firmware-update page or button in the Home app.
Google Home Google says its Matter hubs, including Nest Mini, act as Providers. A Matter device periodically polls a Provider. Developers can distribute images through Google Home Developer Console or the CSA DCL. Google also documents automatic OTA pushes for devices linked to a Matter hub but not registered in Developer Console. Having a Google Matter hub does not by itself mean a particular accessory supports Matter OTA or will receive an update through Google.
Amazon Alexa Alexa can deliver Matter OTA updates for eligible products. The device must support Matter OTA as a Requestor, the developer must publish firmware to the DCL, and the developer must run regression tests with Alexa for every release. Amazon says it pushes updates only for developers who meet that testing commitment; developers are directed to contact an Amazon representative about eligibility and next steps. Being visible in Alexa does not establish eligibility for Alexa-delivered firmware updates, nor does it make Alexa the accessory’s only update route.

These distinctions come from platform developer documentation, not a guarantee that each platform exposes the same controls to household users. Apple’s Matter support page covers pairing and cross-ecosystem management, but it is not evidence of a universal firmware-update interface. What determines whether a specific device gets an update

The manufacturer remains central to the process: it designs the Requestor behavior, signs and releases firmware, and decides whether to publish a particular update through a supported Provider workflow. For Alexa delivery, the platform’s stated testing requirements also apply. A hub or Thread border router alone is not proof that a specific accessory can use Matter OTA.

  • Check the exact model’s support page or manual for its firmware-update method; the maker may direct you to its own app or service.
  • Look for an explicit statement that the model supports Matter OTA, rather than assuming that Matter compatibility includes it.
  • If a maker documents a platform-delivered update, confirm that the model and platform are covered. Platform-level developer support is not a device-by-device availability list.
  • Follow the maker’s instructions for the actual update route. Do not assume that adding another Matter hub will make an unsupported accessory eligible.

When platform update claims need qualification

Apple, Google, and Amazon publish implementation or developer guidance that explains how updates can be delivered under their respective workflows. Those documents do not establish that every Matter accessory will receive updates through a particular ecosystem, that users will see a common update control in each app, or that a platform is the only way to update a product. The practical answer is model-specific: verify Matter OTA support and the manufacturer’s documented update route for that accessory.
