Before you pay, pin down exactly what the seller is claiming, inspect photographs of the actual item, and verify any serial number or certificate with its issuer. Compare the evidence with references for that collectible category, then check the seller’s history, return terms, payment route, and dispute deadlines. For an expensive item or a difficult attribution, consult a qualified specialist in that category.
Define exactly what the seller is claiming
Write down the maker, item type or model, edition name and number, claimed edition size, production period, condition, and provenance. Be precise about the claim: an item can be genuine merchandise without having a genuine signature, and a genuine signature does not by itself prove that the item was used in a particular game or event.
Check what “limited edition” means
Ask for the total edition size and how the seller knows it. “Limited edition” alone does not establish that production stopped at a fixed number. In 2016, FBI Chicago warned buyers that some memorabilia is described as limited because production tracks consumer interest, rather than because it comes from a predetermined run. Treat the stated edition size as a claim to verify, not proof of scarcity.
Separate the claims
Keep authenticity, official licensing, signature, particular use, condition grade, and valuation distinct. Evidence that supports one does not automatically establish the others. This distinction matters when deciding whether a certificate, database entry, platform service, or expert review actually addresses the reason you are considering the purchase.

Inspect evidence of the actual item
Request original photographs of the object being sold—not only stock images—including overall views and clear close-ups of the details relevant to its category. The FTC’s November 2024 U.S. marketplace guidance says photographs of the actual item help a buyer assess condition and whether the seller has it. If a key mark is hidden, blurred, or shown inconsistently, ask for a new photograph before paying.
Compare category-specific details
Use references suited to the object rather than a universal “spot a fake” checklist. FBI Chicago recommends examining details such as sports jersey stitching and patches and comparing autographs with known signatures. UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) guidance for second-hand fashion points buyers to labels, logos, craftsmanship, serial numbers, and consistency between the description and photographs. Those checks are examples for their respective categories; they are not interchangeable tests for every collectible.

A 10× jeweler’s loupe can help you read a small serial, stamp, signature, or construction detail. Magnification makes details easier to inspect; it does not establish that an item is authentic.
Verify certificates, serial numbers, and holograms with the issuer
When an item has an identifier or certificate, locate the issuing organization’s official lookup or contact it using contact details you found independently. Check that the record matches the specific item and the specific claim—not merely that the number format looks plausible or that a search returns a valid number. Ask the issuer what was examined and whether it can confirm the record directly.

Check the authentication program’s scope
An issuer’s process may cover only certain items or claims. MLB says its authentication program applies to qualifying items witnessed being signed or used under the program. Those items receive a tamper-evident hologram with a unique identifier that can be searched in MLB’s database. MLB also says it does not accept past items for later independent authentication.
MLB separately distinguishes those authentication holograms from holograms on some MLB-licensed products. A licensed-product hologram does not mean the item was signed or game-used under the authentication program, and it will not appear in that program’s game-used/autograph lookup. The relevant check is whether the issuer’s record supports the seller’s exact claim.

Choose verification that matches the claim
Verification options differ in expertise, whether anyone examines the physical object, what claim is covered, and what remedy is available if there is a dispute. A platform badge is not a substitute for reading the service’s current terms.
| Verification route | What it can establish | What to check before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Seller’s photographs and documents | They let you inspect visible details and review the seller’s stated evidence. | Confirm images show the actual item. A seller-provided certificate or QR code is not independent confirmation unless its issuer can verify it. |
| Issuer-controlled serial or certificate lookup | It can connect an identifier to a record maintained by the issuing organization. | Confirm the record matches this item and the claim. Program scope depends on the issuer; MLB’s program, for example, covers qualifying witnessed items. |
| Marketplace authentication or buyer protection | It may add an inspection or dispute-resolution process for eligible items. | Covered categories, procedures, remedies, eligibility rules, and claim windows vary by platform; check the current terms for the particular transaction. |
| Independent category specialist | A qualified specialist may assess an item or attribution using category-specific expertise. | Confirm the specialist’s qualifications, method, accepted items, current service scope, fee, timing, and what happens if the conclusion changes. Cost and timing are not stated uniformly; ask the provider directly. |
Assess the seller and protect your ability to dispute the purchase
Review recent seller history and whether descriptions and answers are consistent. Ask questions in writing and keep the replies, listing, photographs, receipt, and any certificate information. Compare the asking price with credible references for the same issue, condition, and provenance. A price far below those references is a reason to investigate further, not proof of counterfeiting.
Best Value
Read the exact return policy, marketplace-protection rules, eligibility conditions, and reporting deadlines before checkout. Pay through the marketplace’s protected payment flow or another safer method rather than moving the transaction off-platform; leaving the platform can cost you access to its protections. The FTC’s U.S. guidance notes that protections vary and claim windows may be short. They are not a guarantee of recovery.
U.S. legal context
The FTC’s Hobby Protection Act summary concerns imitation political and numismatic items and specifies disclosure requirements for them. Those rules do not authenticate every type of collectible or make a seller’s paperwork conclusive.
UK context
UK IPO guidance says counterfeit goods are illegal to sell in the UK and directs consumers to platform dispute procedures and relevant UK reporting channels. Its advice is UK-specific. In a release dated 27 May 2026, the IPO reported that one in four UK pre-loved clothing buyers had unknowingly bought counterfeit clothing online in the prior year; nearly 60% of those affected reported poor quality, rapid deterioration, or refund disputes. The same release said 63% felt confident they could spot a fake, while one in three said they did not check authenticity before purchase. These figures describe UK second-hand clothing buyers, not collectible buyers generally. The IPO’s Vinted guidance describes a 48-hour post-delivery reporting window; that deadline is specific to the service guidance and should not be applied to other platforms.
Bring in a specialist for a costly or difficult attribution
If the value is significant or the item is hard to assess from photographs, look for an authenticator whose expertise fits the exact category and claim. Ask what the specialist will examine, whether the review is in person or photo-based, what evidence or method supports the conclusion, and what recourse applies if that conclusion changes. The FBI advises buyers to consider an authenticator’s qualifications. Do not treat authentication as grading, valuation, proof of official licensing, or proof of a particular use unless the service explicitly covers that claim.
