Apply Jef Raskin’s humane interface ideas by finding where hidden state changes an action’s meaning, removing unnecessary modes, keeping behavior consistent, protecting users’ attention, and comparing the effort required for common tasks. These ideas form a practical design framework—not a guarantee that one interface will suit every user or situation.

What Raskin’s humane interface principles mean

Jef Raskin developed his framework in The Humane Interface: New Directions for Designing Interactive Systems, published by Addison-Wesley in 2000. The Smithsonian Libraries and Archives catalog lists topics including the locus of attention, modes, quantification, unification, and navigation. Smithsonian catalog record and InformIT publisher listing.

In practical terms, the framework asks designers to make software fit human cognitive abilities and limitations. It is concerned with what people have to remember, whether their actions behave predictably, where their attention is directed, and how much work ordinary tasks require. The Raskin Center’s principles page is editorial commentary about the framework, rather than a substitute for the book itself. Raskin Center principles.

1. Map common tasks and the state that affects them

Start with a small set of frequent or important tasks. For each one, record the user’s action, the system state at the time, what the software does, and what feedback the user receives. Look for places where an identical action can produce different results because of a mode, selection, focus, or setting that may not be obvious.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Caps Lock is a simple example: the key toggles a state, so later keystrokes produce capital letters even after the user has stopped thinking about the toggle. The problem is not simply that the computer has state; it is that the action’s result depends on state a person can forget. Raskin Center principles.

2. Remove modes where you can; make necessary state clear

A mode changes what an action does depending on the system’s state. If a user must remember whether a mode is active to predict what a familiar action will do, the interface is imposing a memory burden and creating room for surprises.

Ask whether the action can be explicit

Before adding a mode, consider whether a more direct action could make the intended result clear without changing the meaning of other actions. If the mode is unnecessary, removing it avoids asking users to track it.

Use a quasimode when state must be temporary

Raskin’s quasimode idea keeps a state active only while the user continuously performs an action. The Raskin Center contrasts holding Shift with toggling Caps Lock: the held key makes the temporary state depend on an action the user is still performing, rather than a toggle they might forget. Raskin Center principles.

For a contemporary product, test any held-action proposal in its real context. Consider accessibility, touch and keyboard use, and whether users can comfortably maintain the action. The underlying principle is to avoid hidden, lingering state; it does not mean that a held key or gesture will be suitable in every interface.

3. Keep familiar actions predictable

Audit repeated gestures and commands across contexts. Does the same action keep the same meaning, or does the software silently change its effect? Consistency lets users build habits; changing established behavior makes them reconsider actions they previously performed without stopping to think.

The Raskin Center compares changes to familiar interface behavior with breaking changes to a software API: people and systems that rely on the old behavior may be disrupted. If behavior must change, make the relevant context clear and consider the transition cost for users. Raskin Center principles.

4. Protect the user’s locus of attention

In this framework, the locus of attention is where the user’s focus is directed. For many tasks, that is the document, design, message, or other work product—not the software’s controls. Examine dialogs, confirmations, warnings, notifications, and progress indicators for the attention they demand.

  • Does this prompt interrupt work that can safely continue?
  • Does the user need to monitor a process that could provide an update only when needed?
  • Is an unavoidable interruption proportionate to the importance of the event?

The Raskin Center’s guidance is to minimize demands on attention and scale unavoidable demands to their importance. Raskin Center principles.

5. Compare the effort of frequent tasks

Quantification is among the topics listed in the Smithsonian catalog record, but the sources here do not establish a specific Raskin scoring system for evaluating modern products. For a practical design review, compare the effort involved in common tasks using dimensions such as these; treat them as your evaluation criteria, not as metrics attributed to Raskin.

  • Actions or steps required to finish the task.
  • Time to complete it in realistic use.
  • Errors and the effort needed to recover from them.
  • Attention switches or state the user must remember along the way.

Unification is also a topic in the catalog record. When several controls appear to serve one atomic task, ask whether they support genuinely different user needs or merely introduce inconsistent paths. Smithsonian catalog record.

6. Use Archy as an implementation example

Archy was a complete computing environment that the Raskin Center presents as a proof of concept for these ideas. Its described features included modeless interaction, LEAP for keyboard-driven navigation, continuous saving, and full undo history. The Center also notes challenges with interoperability in the wider software ecosystem. Raskin Center’s Archy account.

Archy shows how the principles can shape a whole environment, rather than a single control. Its description does not establish that this approach is superior for every user, workflow, or product. When applying the ideas to a real alternative, compare dependence on hidden state, consistency across contexts, effort for frequent tasks, interruption cost, error recovery, and compatibility with users’ existing tools.

A practical review sequence

  1. Choose tasks: Select frequent or important tasks and document each action, relevant state, outcome, and feedback.
  2. Find state-dependent behavior: Flag actions whose results change with a mode, selection, focus, or setting that users may not notice.
  3. Remove or expose modes: Replace unnecessary modes with explicit actions; where state is needed, assess whether a continuously active action is appropriate.
  4. Check consistency: Compare the meaning of repeated gestures and commands across contexts, and identify changes that could disrupt established habits.
  5. Review attention demands: Assess prompts and notifications for interruption, monitoring, and proportionality to the event.
  6. Compare task effort: Evaluate steps, time, errors, recovery, and attention switches for the tasks you chose.
  7. Check ecosystem fit: Consider whether the approach works with users’ accessibility needs, devices, and existing tools and workflows.
