Sign in with the Xbox account that owns the game; eligible saves, add-ons, and achievements carry across supported devices. It applies only to participating digital titles, and you can play the same game on only one device at a time.
What Xbox Play Anywhere means
Play Anywhere is a digital-game license shared across supported devices—not a promise that every Xbox title works on PC. The exact game or edition must participate. Check its Xbox Play Anywhere badge or listing on Xbox’s Play Anywhere page before you buy or redeem it.
For a qualifying digital game, you do not pay an additional Play Anywhere charge. Xbox’s FAQ states: “No, there is no additional cost for Xbox Play Anywhere.” That does not mean the game itself is free; you still need to own an eligible digital license.
Where you can play—and what you need
Xbox currently describes support for Xbox consoles, Windows 10/11 PCs, and Windows 11 gaming handhelds. These platform categories do not guarantee that a particular PC or handheld can run every participating game. Check the game’s listing for its hardware and input requirements.

The license must be digital. Eligible digital purchases from the Xbox Store or Windows Store qualify, as can eligible digital codes from participating retailers. A disc copy is not covered by Play Anywhere, even if the same title has a participating digital version.
How to use Xbox Play Anywhere
- Check the exact title and edition. Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere badge or check the participating-games listing before purchase. Catalog eligibility can change, so verify the title rather than relying on an old list.
- Buy or redeem the digital game. Use the Xbox Store, Windows Store, or an eligible digital code from a participating retailer. Make sure the specific game or edition is marked as participating.
- Sign in with the owning Xbox account. Use the account associated with the purchase on the Xbox console, Windows PC, or supported handheld.
- Find and install the game. On Xbox, look in My Games & Apps under Ready to Install. On Windows or a supported handheld, open the Xbox app and check My Library.
- Install on the other supported device and resume. The account’s eligible progress and content can carry over; check the individual game’s requirements and settings for the new device.
What carries across devices
Xbox says that progress is saved with Xbox. Saves, eligible add-ons, and achievements can follow you between supported devices when you use the owning account. Add-on examples include content such as Season Passes, consumables, and in-game unlocks for a Play Anywhere game you own.

Achievements and Gamerscore are shared rather than duplicated for each device. Xbox describes them as “A single shared set of Gamerscore and Achievements” for Play Anywhere games.
What Play Anywhere does not do
- It does not cover every Xbox game. Participation is title-specific; check the badge or listing.
- It does not convert a disc license. The program applies to eligible digital games, not disc copies.
- It does not let you play the same game simultaneously on multiple devices. Xbox says the same game can be signed in on only one Xbox console, one Windows 10/11 PC, or one supported handheld at a time.
- It does not guarantee a PC will run a game. Play Anywhere eligibility and a device meeting the game’s system requirements are separate questions.
Quick checks before you buy
| Check | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Eligibility | The exact game or edition has the Play Anywhere badge or appears as participating. |
| Format | You are buying or redeeming an eligible digital license, not relying on a disc. |
| Destination device | You plan to use a supported Xbox console, Windows 10/11 PC, or supported Windows 11 handheld. |
| Account | You can sign in with the Xbox account that owns the game. |
| PC capability | Your device meets the individual game’s listed hardware and input requirements. |
| Play expectations | You expect to play the same game on one device at a time, not concurrently on console and PC. |
How the platform wording changed
Xbox’s launch-era explainer, published on 15 September 2016, described Xbox One and Windows 10. It is useful historical context, but current device support should be taken from Xbox’s current Play Anywhere FAQ, which names Windows 10/11 PCs and supported Windows 11 gaming handhelds.
