As of October 4, 2026, Microsoft has announced Project Helix and some of its goals, but Sony has not published a comparable next-generation PlayStation specification sheet in the sources available. Compare what each company has actually disclosed—and wait for retail hardware and comparable game tests before treating either console as more powerful.
What is confirmed about Xbox Helix and PS6?

That gap matters: a named Xbox project with design goals is not directly comparable to an unannounced Sony product specification. The Sony status and timing points above come from secondary reporting on corporate materials, not a direct Sony announcement of a PS6.
Why teraflops cannot answer “Which console is faster?”
Teraflops describe a measure of theoretical floating-point compute throughput; they do not tell you how quickly a particular game will run or how good its image will look. Results also depend on the rest of the hardware and how a game uses it: CPU performance, memory bandwidth and capacity, storage and asset streaming, software tools, graphics techniques, power limits, and developer choices.
Even a GPU-heavy game can be limited by simulation, game logic, or frame pacing rather than peak GPU math. A useful comparison therefore needs official hardware details and representative games running under comparable conditions—not just one headline compute figure.

The 40-versus-56-TFLOPS claim is rumor, not a verdict
A September 2026 VideoCardz report attributed alleged figures of 40 TFLOPS for PS6 and 56 TFLOPS for Helix to hardware leaker KeplerL2. Those figures are unverified and are not manufacturer specifications. The report itself cautions that theoretical compute does not translate directly into proportional game performance. They cannot establish that Helix will be faster, nor confirm either console’s GPU configuration.
What should buyers compare instead?
Game access, purchases, and library continuity
Look beyond a broad promise that a machine can play a category of games. The practical questions are whether specific games work, whether saves and entitlements carry over, and how purchases operate across console and PC. Helix’s stated Xbox-and-PC design goal and four-generation compatibility commitment are relevant, but Microsoft has not specified storefront coverage, licensing rules, or compatibility for every title. Do not assume a policy for Sony’s successor before Sony confirms it.

Xbox reported more than 1,500 Xbox Play Anywhere games in a March 11, 2026 Xbox Wire post. That is evidence of the existing console-and-Windows ecosystem, not a promise that every Play Anywhere game will work on Helix. The same post reported more than 5,000 developers building for Xbox; that company-reported developer count does not indicate how many games will support Helix at launch.
CPU capacity and frame pacing
For games with dense crowds, complex simulation, or many interacting systems, CPU capability can matter as much as graphics throughput. When official CPU architectures and clocks are published, compare them alongside performance in the same games, at the same settings and target frame rate. No final CPU specification for either future console is established in the cited material.

Memory and storage
Capacity and bandwidth affect how much game data can be kept ready; storage speed, compression, and streaming affect how assets arrive during play. Usable space also determines how much of a library can remain installed. Wait for confirmed configurations rather than filling in missing numbers from rumors.
Component costs add uncertainty, not a useful price formula. In a June 10, 2026 leadership update, Xbox said its storage-component costs had risen to more than twice the preceding fall’s cost and then doubled again, with another significant increase expected for the 2027 holiday season; Microsoft said memory costs followed a similar trajectory. These are Microsoft’s reported input costs and outlook, not the retail price of either console.

Ray tracing, reconstruction, and image quality
Ask which ray-tracing workloads are accelerated, what reconstruction or upscaling modes games use, and what image quality and latency each mode delivers. Microsoft’s Helix announcement claims an “order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability,” but gives no benchmark or defined baseline in that post. Sony’s December 18, 2024 PlayStation.Blog post, by PS5 and PS5 Pro lead architect Mark Cerny, describes a deeper AMD collaboration focused on machine-learning graphics and gameplay technology and discusses PSSR on PS5 Pro. It does not specify PS6 capabilities.
Efficiency and sustained performance
Peak specifications do not show how a console behaves during a long play session. Once retail systems are available, compare power draw, cooling, noise, and sustained frame rates while running the same game at the same resolution and mode. The cited material provides no comparable retail testing for either future system.

Price, availability, and total cost
A useful ownership comparison will need more than the base console price: include any optional disc drive, storage expansion, subscriptions, and the display required for the modes you want. No next-generation consumer price or configuration is confirmed in the cited sources. Component-cost volatility is not enough to predict what either console will cost at retail.

A useful head-to-head requires comparable information from both companies. Watch for official retail specifications, consumer launch windows and prices, and clear rules for game compatibility and purchases. After launch, independent tests of the same games can show how the systems behave in practice. Keep three categories distinct when comparing claims:
- Officially confirmed: statements or specifications published by the manufacturer, with their scope and date.
- Reported or rumored: claims attributed to secondary reporting or unnamed hardware sources, not confirmed product specifications.
- Independently tested: measured results from retail hardware under stated, comparable conditions.
Until both consoles have enough evidence in those categories, a rumored GPU figure is not a substitute for a performance verdict.
Should you wait for Helix or PS6?
If you need a console now, decide based on the games, price, and features available in the current generation rather than an unconfirmed future comparison. If you can wait, hold off on choosing between Helix and Sony’s successor until both companies disclose consumer specifications, launch information, and purchase and compatibility details—and independent testing can compare actual games. Microsoft’s 2027 developer-alpha plan alone does not establish when consumers will be able to buy Helix.
