For a typical PS5 owner, PC is the established option for emulating PS2 and original Xbox games. Sony’s documented PS5 backward compatibility covers the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, not PS2 or original Xbox titles. On PC, separate projects—PCSX2 for PS2 and xemu for original Xbox—provide documented routes, though compatibility depends on the game.
What can you play on a standard PS5?
Sony’s support page says PS5 consoles play the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 games. It does not document native support for PS2 games or original Xbox games, whether from discs or another source. That describes Sony’s documented consumer support; it is not a claim about every possible modified-console configuration. Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility information is specifically about PS4 games.
There are community reports of PS2 emulation projects for jailbroken PS5 systems, but the available report does not establish reliable title coverage, performance, setup requirements, or suitability for general use. Treat that as experimental community activity, not a dependable alternative to PC emulation.
How PC emulation compares
| Platform and library | Project | Operating systems or support documented | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard PS5 | Sony’s documented backward compatibility | PS4 games; the cited page does not establish PS2 or original Xbox support | Check Sony’s support information for the PS4 title you want to play. |
| PC for PS2 | PCSX2 | PC emulator; consult the project’s current setup documentation for supported configurations | Look up the exact game in the compatibility information. PCSX2 reports more than 2,500 titles tested; that is a tested-title count, not a guarantee that every title works. |
| PC for original Xbox | xemu | Windows, macOS, and Linux | Check the current compatibility tracker for the exact release and consider dump integrity and other troubleshooting causes. |
PCSX2 and xemu are separate projects for separate consoles; neither covers both libraries. PC gives you a documented project for each target, but it does not make every game compatible. The projects’ current compatibility information is more useful than a general platform-wide promise: PCSX2 and xemu.

What you need for PS2 games on PC
PCSX2 is the relevant project for emulating PlayStation 2 games. Its project page says most games can run and links to title-level compatibility information. The more-than-2,500 figure is the number of titles tested, not a stated playable percentage of the entire PS2 library.
PCSX2 requires a BIOS dump from a PS2 you legitimately own. The project also expects users to use legally obtained game copies and a BIOS from their own console. Consult the project’s setup and compatibility information and disc-dumping documentation before setting up a title. Do not assume a BIOS or game file downloaded from an unrelated site is authorized.

What you need for original Xbox games on PC
xemu is free and open-source software for original Xbox emulation on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The project encourages users to work with legal backups of their own physical media. It is an independent project and, as its About page explains, is not affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft.
Check xemu’s compatibility information for the specific game before relying on it. The project’s FAQ notes that failures can have different causes, including system issues, corrupted cache, a bad disc dump, or compatibility regressions. A game failing on one setup therefore does not, by itself, establish that the title is unsupported.

Which route should you choose?
- Choose the standard PS5 route if the game you want is a PS4 title covered by Sony’s backward-compatibility support. The cited support page does not establish PS2 or original Xbox play on an ordinary PS5.
- Choose PCSX2 on PC for PS2 games, after checking the individual game’s compatibility and preparing the required BIOS dump from your own PS2.
- Choose xemu on PC for original Xbox games, after checking the current title entry and ensuring you have a sound backup of your own media.
- Do not treat a jailbroken-PS5 report as an equivalent option unless you are prepared to assess an experimental setup whose requirements and results are not independently established here.
Emulator projects’ ownership guidance is not a legal ruling for every country or backup method. Laws about copying media and circumvention vary, so check the rules that apply where you live.
