If a critical vulnerability has no available patch, act to reduce the chance of exploitation while keeping essential services safe: identify affected systems, apply the vendor’s temporary mitigation, limit access or isolate systems where feasible, and increase monitoring. Track which systems remain exposed, then install and verify the vendor’s patch as soon as it is available and safe to deploy. A workaround reduces risk; it does not fix the vulnerability.
1. Find out which systems are affected and exposed
Start with the vendor’s current security advisory and authoritative vulnerability information. Identify the affected product versions and every deployed instance, then record its owner, business function, internet reachability, and dependencies. Prioritize internet-accessible systems and assets whose compromise could have especially serious consequences.
Check whether each exposed system genuinely needs to be reachable from the internet. CISA’s Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance recommends assessing exposure and restricting access that is not necessary. Check dependencies before changing connectivity so an application or service does not lose a required connection.
2. Apply the vendor’s interim mitigation
If the vendor provides a workaround for the affected product and version, use that guidance in preference to a generic fix. Confirm what the workaround changes, whether it applies to your deployment, and what operational side effects it could have. Without a named product and version, there is no safe universal command or workaround to recommend.

Workarounds are temporary. In its Log4j advisory, CISA and partner agencies warned that some workarounds could be incomplete or have harmful side effects, and said they should not be treated as permanent fixes. That advisory is specific to Log4j, but its caution applies when evaluating temporary controls: follow the guidance for the vulnerability you actually face.
3. Reduce access without disrupting essential operations
Choose the strongest exposure-reducing measure your environment can safely support. Depending on the product and its role, options may include:

- Disabling the affected service or feature.
- Using firewall rules to block access to the vulnerable component.
- Isolating the affected system from untrusted networks.
- Removing unnecessary internet exposure.
CISA lists disabling services, blocking access through firewall configuration, and increasing monitoring as courses of action when patches do not exist, have not been tested, or cannot be applied promptly. Its Federal Government Cybersecurity Incident and Vulnerability Response Playbooks address federal response processes, while noting that broader practices may also help public and private organizations.
Before changing routes, isolating a host, or disabling a service, assess operational and safety dependencies. This matters especially in industrial control and other operational environments, where an availability change can create risks of its own. Use applicable vendor and sector guidance rather than assuming a network control is harmless.

4. Monitor for attempted or successful exploitation
Increase monitoring while the vulnerability remains unpatched. Watch relevant inbound and outbound traffic, system and application logs, and security alerts for activity associated with the affected component. Use the vendor’s advisory and applicable authoritative guidance to determine what activity is relevant.
If monitoring raises credible signs of exploitation, investigate as a security incident. A mitigation can reduce the opportunity for an attack, but it does not establish that the system was never compromised.

5. Track the status of every affected asset
Maintain an asset-level record so the team can distinguish systems that are fixed from those that are only mitigated or remain at risk. For each instance, record its exposure, mitigation applied, validation or monitoring status, owner, and next action. Update the record as vendor guidance or the system’s condition changes.
Continue checking the vendor’s advisory and applicable authoritative sources for a patch or revised mitigation. CISA and partner agencies’ Log4j advisory is a case-specific example of interim guidance; it should not be substituted for current instructions for a different vulnerability.

6. Patch, verify, and retire temporary controls
When the vendor releases a patch, confirm that it covers the affected version and can be deployed safely. Where feasible, test it in a test or development environment that reflects production, then deploy it through your organization’s change process. The Log4j advisory recommends this kind of representative testing.
After deployment, verify that the affected system is no longer vulnerable and update its status. Remove temporary restrictions or workarounds only when they are no longer needed and doing so is safe. CISA’s product-security guidance describes broader security practices but does not replace product-specific patch instructions or applicable sector requirements: CISA and FBI guidance on product security bad practices.
How to choose between temporary controls
Compare the available options against the system’s actual exposure and role rather than assuming that one control is best everywhere.
- Exposure reduction: Will the control prevent untrusted users or networks from reaching the vulnerable component?
- Operational and safety impact: Could disabling, isolating, or reconfiguring the system interrupt a critical dependency?
- Confidence and reversibility: Is the control supported by the vendor, appropriate for the exact product and version, and possible to roll back if it causes instability?
- Detection and follow-up: Can the team monitor effectively, track the affected asset, and move promptly to a safe patch?
Some controls may be incomplete or cause side effects, so weigh risk reduction against the consequences of applying them. Legal duties, reporting timelines, and binding requirements also vary by sector and jurisdiction; consult the instructions that apply to your organization.
