For ordinary dirt and surface marks, clean suede sneakers with a gentle dry brush, use a suede eraser only where needed, then brush again to lift the nap. Let mud dry before cleaning, avoid soap and water, and treat protector as optional—not as waterproofing.
What you need
- A suede brush or clean, soft toothbrush for dry surface dirt.
- A suede eraser for remaining dry marks.
- A shoe tree or clean, crumpled paper to help the sneaker hold its shape.
- Optionally, a protector labeled as suitable for suede.
Use the sneaker maker’s care instructions if available, particularly if the suede has an unusual finish. For an expensive pair or uncertain material, test any treatment discreetly before applying it more widely.
How to clean suede sneakers
- Prepare the shoe. Remove the laces if they are in the way. Insert a shoe tree or loosely stuff the sneaker with clean paper to help it keep its shape; Nike recommends a shoe tree or crumpled newspaper in its suede-cleaning guide.
- Let wet dirt dry. If the sneaker is muddy or damp, leave it at room temperature until dry. Nike warns that brushing while the material is wet can cause a stain. Do not put it in a tumble dryer.
- Brush gently. Use a suede brush or toothbrush to lift dry dust and dirt. Follow the nap’s direction where practical, and avoid forceful scrubbing.
- Erase remaining surface marks. Rub a suede eraser lightly over dry marks. Stop if the finish changes or looks abraded; Timberland cautions that aggressive use of an eraser bar can dull or damage finished suede.
- Brush again. Once the shoe is dry, brush lightly to raise and even the nap. Timberland’s Product Care FAQs notes that brushing at the end helps bring the nap back.
Why avoid washing suede sneakers?
Do not machine-wash suede shoes or hand-wash them with soap and water. Nike advises against both methods in its cleaning guidance. For wet shoes, Nike recommends stuffing them with newspaper or airing them in front of a fan; it warns that a dryer can damage shoes. Keep the cleaning step dry and gentle rather than soaking the material.
Should you apply suede protector?
A suede-compatible protector is optional. Nike says protector can help prevent water stains, but that does not make suede waterproof. Follow the specific product’s label for application and drying directions; there is no universal spray distance, coat count, or reapplication interval established here.

- Apply only as directed on the product label, in a ventilated area if the label calls for it.
- Let the shoe dry fully before wearing it.
Timberland says its Balm Proofer can be used on suede after drying and warns that it may darken lighter suede. That is a product-specific caution, not a guarantee about every protector; a discreet test helps reveal whether the particular treatment changes the color.
When gentle home cleaning may not be enough
This method is intended for ordinary surface dirt and marks. The cited care guidance does not establish that brushing or erasing can restore severely damaged or permanently stained suede. Avoid escalating to liquid cleaner or stronger scrubbing if the finish is already changing; consult the sneaker maker’s care instructions or a shoe-care professional for a valuable pair.
