AI can help find TypeScript code-quality problems and propose fixes, but current evidence does not show that it can do so reliably enough to work without review. Treat AI as a reviewer and patch assistant: verify its findings, run TypeScript and project checks, and confirm that each change preserves the code’s intended behavior.

What AI can—and cannot—do in a TypeScript review

AI code-review tools can inspect changes, flag potential issues, explain them, and suggest patches. Their output is a set of candidates, not a dependable inventory of every defect. A tool may miss a real problem, report a false positive, or suggest a change that looks valid but alters behavior.

It helps to separate three tasks that are often conflated:

  • Code authoring: producing code for a defined task that passes specified tests.
  • Code review: identifying possible defects or maintainability issues in existing or changed code.
  • Repair: changing code to address a real problem while preserving intended behavior.

Success at one task does not establish reliability at the others. In particular, evidence that an AI-assisted coding task passes tests is not proof that an AI reviewer can consistently detect and correctly repair TypeScript quality issues across different repositories.

What current tools offer for TypeScript

Copilot code review

GitHub says Copilot code review can review pull requests in any language, identify issues, and propose changes users can apply. It is available across several GitHub and development environments, including GitHub.com, CLI, mobile, VS Code, Visual Studio, Xcode, JetBrains IDEs, and Azure DevOps in public preview. Some repository-context and suggestion-handoff capabilities depend on Actions runners; GitHub describes suggestion handoff to its cloud agent as public preview. See GitHub’s Copilot code review documentation.

Code Quality and Autofix

GitHub Code Quality combines CodeQL quality queries for maintainability, reliability, or style concerns with LLM-powered analysis intended to surface additional insights. Copilot Autofix can propose a fix for an issue found through either path. GitHub calls Autofix best-effort: it does not generate a fix for every finding, and users must review suggestions before accepting them. Its documentation warns that a suggestion may be incomplete, incorrect, or unsafe. See GitHub’s Code Quality documentation.

ESLint feedback in Copilot review

In a changelog entry dated November 20, 2025, GitHub announced public-preview ESLint integration in Copilot code review for JavaScript and TypeScript projects. The announcement says administrators can configure ESLint, CodeQL, and PMD through repository rulesets. This is a concrete TypeScript-related integration, but the announcement describes a public preview; it is not a guarantee that the feature is available or configured in every repository. See GitHub’s November 20, 2025 changelog.

What the reliability evidence does—and does not—show

A controlled Copilot study measured assisted authoring

GitHub’s study summary, published November 18, 2024 and updated February 6, 2025, describes a randomized trial with 202 developers who had at least five years of experience. Participants completed a web-server API coding task, and the resulting code was assessed with unit tests and developer review. GitHub reported that developers with Copilot were 53.2% more likely to pass all 10 unit tests. It also reported relative improvements in readability (3.62%), reliability (2.94%), maintainability (2.47%), and conciseness (4.16%), plus a 5% higher likelihood of code approval.

Those are GitHub-reported results for that particular task and study. The summary does not establish TypeScript-specific detection rates or successful repair rates for code-quality problems in varied production repositories. Read GitHub’s study summary for its scope and methodology.

General coding benchmarks are not TypeScript quality tests

SWE-bench Verified contains 500 human-checked issue-fixing tasks drawn from 12 Python repositories. It measures repository issue resolution, not TypeScript code quality as a whole. OpenAI’s later analysis also discusses design and contamination concerns, including underspecified prompts and tests with low coverage, and advises caution in interpreting the benchmark signal. These results do not supply a direct measure of how often AI correctly identifies and fixes TypeScript quality problems. See the SWE-bench Verified announcement and OpenAI’s later benchmark analysis.

The missing measurement matters

The available evidence does not establish a TypeScript-specific controlled trial that measures precision, recall, and successful repair rates across representative code-quality defects. Nor does it establish a robust head-to-head ranking of AI review tools for TypeScript. Product descriptions and general coding benchmarks should not be treated as substitutes for those measurements.

Why an AI finding or fix can be wrong

GitHub’s documentation identifies failure modes that apply directly to code review and repair. A tool may miss an issue or raise a false alarm; point to the wrong location; generate code that is syntactically invalid; or produce syntactically valid code that is semantically wrong. A patch may address only part of a finding, mislead about security, or propose an unsupported, insecure, or fabricated dependency. Large files or repositories can also exceed the context the tool uses, so relevant information may be truncated.

These errors are why a clean-looking explanation or accepted patch is not proof of correctness. A suggested change needs to be evaluated against the project’s types, rules, tests, and intended behavior.

A safer workflow for AI-assisted TypeScript fixes

  1. Ask for a specific review. Give the assistant the relevant changed code and ask it to identify a concrete class of concern—such as unsafe type narrowing or duplicated logic—rather than requesting an unrestricted “make this better” rewrite. Treat its findings as hypotheses.
  2. Check whether each finding is real. Compare the explanation with the surrounding code and requirements. Reject findings that misunderstand the code’s contract or rely on behavior the project does not require.
  3. Inspect the proposed diff. Look for changed return values, weakened types, broader assertions, skipped edge cases, unrelated refactors, and dependency additions or upgrades. Confirm that the patch fixes the identified issue rather than merely silencing a warning.
  4. Run the project’s configured checks. Use the TypeScript compiler with the project’s configuration, its existing tests, and configured lint or static-analysis rules. These checks can catch some classes of errors, but passing them alone does not prove the patch preserves every intended behavior.
  5. Add or adjust tests when behavior is affected. Cover the relevant expected behavior and edge cases, then run the tests. Keep a developer responsible for deciding whether to accept the change.

How to compare AI TypeScript review tools

There is no evidence-based universal winner for TypeScript reliability. Compare tools against the work and checks in your own repository:

  • Language and rule coverage: Does the tool support your TypeScript setup and the checks your team relies on?
  • Repository context: Can it use the files and surrounding code needed to understand the change, and what limits apply to large files or repositories?
  • Static-analysis integration: Can it incorporate ESLint or other deterministic findings, and is that integration generally available or still in preview?
  • Review and repair format: Does it explain a finding, offer an inline diff, or apply changes through an agent? How can a developer inspect and test the result?
  • Documented limitations: What does the vendor say about missed findings, false positives, incomplete fixes, and required human review?
