Reduce Claude Code costs by removing stale context, keeping only the information a task needs, and matching the model and tools to the work. Start by checking usage, then choose whether to clear an unrelated session or compact a continuing one. Measure changes against your own workload: cost varies with model, codebase, usage patterns, account type, and billing terms.
1. Measure usage before changing your workflow
In Claude Code, run /usage to see session token statistics. For API users, it can also show an estimated dollar amount based on list prices unless organization-managed pricing is configured. Treat that amount as a diagnostic, not necessarily as the charge on an invoice. Anthropic identifies the Claude Console Usage page as authoritative for API billing; Pro and Max users should consult their plan usage information because the API-style session estimate is not their subscription bill. See Anthropic’s Claude Code cost guidance.
Record a few comparable tasks before and after a change. Keep the task type and model as similar as practical, and note whether the work involved large files, tool output, or a long session. That gives you a more useful comparison than treating one session’s estimate as a general budget.
2. Choose between clearing and compacting
The key decision is whether the next task depends on the current conversation. Anthropic notes that token costs scale with context size: the more context Claude processes, the more tokens you use. Removing irrelevant history helps; discarding facts needed for the next step does not.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use /clear for unrelated work
When switching to a different task, run /clear so old conversation context is not carried forward. If you may need to return to the old work, rename the session first so you can find and resume it later. Clearing is most useful when the old discussion, decisions, and outputs are not relevant to the new request.
Use /compact to continue related work
For work that continues the same feature or investigation, use /compact with explicit instructions about what the summary must retain. For example, ask it to preserve the failing test output, decisions already made, files changed, relevant API details, and unresolved questions. A generic summary may omit a detail that the next implementation or debugging step needs.

If a particular preservation rule should apply across the project, put concise compaction guidance in CLAUDE.md. Keep persistent instructions focused on information that is useful broadly; move specialized workflow guidance into skills that can be brought in when needed. The Claude Code cost guide covers these context-management options.
3. Match model capability to the task
Do not default to the most capable model for every request. Anthropic’s cost guide recommends Sonnet for most coding tasks because it costs less than Opus, reserving Opus for complex architectural decisions or multi-step reasoning; it suggests Haiku for simple subagent tasks. Availability and prices can change, so check the current model options and pricing documentation before making a specific cost comparison.

A practical rule is to use the least costly available model that can reliably handle the task. A small, well-scoped edit may not need the same reasoning capacity as a cross-cutting design decision. If a simpler model struggles, the extra iterations may erase the apparent savings, so compare outcomes as well as token use.
4. Reduce unnecessary tool and output context
Tool definitions and large command results can add material Claude must process. Use /context to inspect what is taking space, then focus on the avoidable sources:

- Disable MCP servers you are not using for the task.
- Prefer a CLI tool when it can do the job without the overhead of an unused or unnecessarily broad MCP tool list.
- Use hooks to filter or limit large command output before it reaches Claude.
- Ask for targeted results, such as a test failure or a specific file section, instead of forwarding broad logs or dumps.
These changes should preserve access to the tools and evidence the task actually needs; removing a required tool or truncating decisive output can cause rework.

A focused request can avoid broad repository scans. Name the function or file, describe the desired change, and state relevant constraints or acceptance checks. For a long or complex task, ask Claude to plan before implementation and review that plan early. Correcting a mistaken direction before it produces a large trail of analysis and tool output is generally less wasteful than redirecting it late.

6. Set reasoning effort deliberately
Thinking tokens are billed as output tokens, according to Anthropic’s pricing documentation. Reducing reasoning effort can lower token use when a simple task does not need extensive deliberation, while higher effort may be worthwhile for work requiring deeper analysis. Controls differ across model families, and some models use always-on thinking. Anthropic’s prompting guidance likewise recommends lower effort when overthinking is undesirable. Choose based on the task rather than applying one setting everywhere.
7. Treat prompt caching as workload-dependent
Claude Code automatically uses prompt caching for repeated content such as system prompts. Anthropic’s pricing documentation distinguishes cache writes and reads from ordinary input tokens, and their relative cost depends on the model’s current rates and how much content is reused. Caching can help with repeated context, but it does not justify a fixed savings estimate for every project. Compare actual usage for your workload and current model rather than assuming a particular percentage.
8. Align team controls with the billing route
Teams may use Team or Enterprise plans, Console API access, or a cloud-provider deployment. These routes can differ in usage reporting, spend controls, and the ability to attribute use to individual users. Before setting a cost policy, establish where usage is reported and which limits are available for your actual account and deployment. For cloud-provider configurations, Anthropic documents OpenTelemetry and gateway options in its cost guidance. Choose controls that provide the visibility and attribution your team needs rather than assuming one billing setup works like another.
