Java still uses normal dynamic dispatch during construction, so a subclass’s version may run before that subclass’s fields and invariants are ready. The safest fix is usually to remove the overridable call from the constructor; restricting inheritance or overriding can also be appropriate when it matches the class’s design.
Why calling an overridable method from a constructor is risky
Java runs superclass construction before the subclass’s instance initializers and constructor body have finished. But construction does not disable ordinary virtual method dispatch: if a superclass constructor calls an overridable method, Java can select the subclass’s override.
The Java Language Specification states: “Unlike C++, the Java programming language does not specify altered rules for method dispatch during the creation of a new class instance.” Oracle’s Java SE 26 Language Specification, Chapter 12, describes this language behavior.
As a result, the override may run while subclass fields still have default values rather than their intended initialized values. It may also call other code that assumes the object is fully constructed. Oracle’s Secure Coding Guidelines for Java SE, Guideline 7-4 / OBJECT-4, warn against constructors calling overridable methods because this can expose or use this before initialization is complete.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the warning looks like in practice
In a documented NetBeans example, an Employee constructor calls an overridable setSalaryRange() method. A ComputerScientist subclass overrides it and calculates the range using its marketFactor field. Since the superclass constructor runs first, the override can read marketFactor before the subclass has assigned its intended value, producing an incorrect range. This is an example of the hazard, not a claim that every such call necessarily causes a visible failure. Dustin Marx’s InfoWorld example dates to 2012 and illustrates the warning’s behavior.
How to choose a fix
First check whether the method is actually overridable, whether subclasses already depend on it, and whether supporting inheritance is part of the class’s API. Choose the narrowest change that removes the construction-time dispatch hazard without breaking intended extension behavior.

| Option | Effect | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Remove the virtual call and initialize state directly | Avoids dispatch from the constructor without restricting inheritance. | The constructor can establish the required state itself, using constructor parameters or private helpers. |
| Move optional setup after construction | Runs setup only after construction completes, provided the object is not published prematurely. | The operation is optional or can be invoked through a controlled factory or initialization path. |
Declare the class final |
Prevents all subclassing. | The class is not intended to support inheritance. |
Declare the method final |
Allows subclassing but prevents subclasses from overriding this method. | The class remains extensible, but this particular operation must not be overridden. |
Make the method private |
Restricts the method to its declaring class, so it is not an override point. | The method is an internal implementation detail and the API permits that access restriction. |
Recommended ways to restructure the constructor
Initialize the needed state directly
If the constructor needs values to establish an invariant, pass those values as constructor parameters and assign the fields directly. A private helper can also organize the work: because it cannot be overridden, calling it does not dispatch to subclass behavior. Keep such a helper focused on state the class can safely initialize at that point.
Move optional behavior to a post-construction path
If setup depends on subclass state or is not essential to construction, invoke it through an explicit factory or initialization path after construction has completed. Ensure the object is not made available to other code before that setup finishes; otherwise callers could still observe a partially initialized object.

What not to do automatically
Do not change an instance method to static merely to silence the hint. A static method is class behavior, not instance behavior, so the change can alter semantics and does not preserve the same extension point. Likewise, suppressing the warning does not remove the lifecycle risk; do so only when the design has been reviewed and the call is known to be safe for its actual use.
NetBeans quick-fix choices vary by IDE version. A historical InfoWorld account describes options including making the class or method final and changing the method to static or private; these are not interchangeable fixes. Select based on the class’s supported inheritance contract and the method’s intended behavior, rather than accepting a quick fix without checking its consequences.
