JavaScript’s reach across browsers and server-side runtimes is a major practical strength; the trade-off is that real projects can become difficult to organize and maintain. The “love” points below describe documented capabilities and why developers may value them—not a survey ranking. For the “don’t” list, State of JavaScript 2024 offers a dated snapshot of challenges reported by its respondents, not a census of developers.

What developers may value about JavaScript

These are capabilities of JavaScript and the platforms that run it, not findings about how many developers like each one.

1. It makes web pages interactive

JavaScript can respond to user actions and update a page, helping developers build experiences beyond static documents. MDN describes it as a language for adding interactivity and creating rich web applications. In a browser, that experience uses both the ECMAScript language and browser-provided APIs such as the Document Object Model (DOM); they are connected, but they are not the same thing. MDN’s overview of JavaScript technologies explains the distinction.

2. The same core language runs beyond browsers

JavaScript is also used in environments such as Node.js. That gives developers options beyond code running in a web page, but it does not make browser and server environments interchangeable: each host supplies its own APIs. Browser code that expects the DOM, for example, cannot assume that API exists in Node.js. MDN discusses this broader use in its JavaScript technologies overview.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

3. The language and its host APIs offer different tools

JavaScript developers work with standardized ECMAScript language features as well as APIs provided by their environment. That separation lets the same language serve different contexts, while making it important to know whether a capability comes from the language itself or from a browser or runtime. MDN’s technology overview and language overview describe these layers.

4. It supports asynchronous work

Web applications often need to coordinate work that completes later, such as responding to events or waiting for an operation. JavaScript supports asynchronous interaction; the exact APIs and behavior available depend in part on the host environment. MDN covers this in its JavaScript language overview.

5. Its reach creates room for varied applications

Because JavaScript appears in browsers and in non-browser environments such as Node.js, developers can use it in more than one kind of application. That is a capability, not a guarantee that code, APIs, or project structure can be carried unchanged between hosts.

What JavaScript developers said was difficult

State of JavaScript 2024 gathered 14,015 responses between November 13 and December 10, 2024; results were released December 16. The survey authors caution that it reflects a subset of developers, not the entire ecosystem. Its usage page reports 10,599 respondents to the pain-points question. The figures below are selections in that question, not percentages of all developers or proof that every JavaScript project has these problems. See the survey’s dates and scope and its usage results.

The ordering and counts reflect the survey’s 2024 responses to this question; they should not be read as measured prevalence across the whole JavaScript community.

1. Code architecture

This was the most frequently selected pain point, with 3,719 responses. As an application grows, developers must decide how to divide responsibilities and keep code understandable. The survey establishes that respondents selected architecture as a challenge; it does not establish one cause or show that every project struggles with it.

2. State management

State management received 3,290 selections. In an interactive application, state is information the interface needs to reflect, such as what a user has selected or whether content has loaded. Keeping that information consistent as features and components interact can be difficult; the survey records the challenge, not a single solution.

3. Managing dependencies

Dependency management drew 3,053 selections. Projects may rely on packages maintained outside the application, and teams need to track and update those dependencies. The count indicates respondent concern, not that all projects use the same package workflow or face the same risk.

4. Build tools

Build tools were selected 2,925 times. Tooling can be part of preparing an application for development or delivery, and configuring or maintaining that setup can add complexity beyond writing language code. The survey does not identify a particular tool as the source of respondents’ difficulty.

5. Performance

Performance received 2,538 selections. An application’s responsiveness can depend on its code, its workload, and the runtime environment. The survey reports this as a pain point but does not provide a benchmark or show that JavaScript is inherently slow.

6. Debugging

Debugging was selected 2,355 times. Finding the cause of unexpected behavior can involve application code as well as interactions with host APIs, asynchronous operations, or tooling. The survey does not separate these possible sources.

7. Date management

Date management also received 2,338 selections. Working with dates can require care about how values are represented and interpreted in an application. The survey identifies this as a respondent-reported issue, but does not specify which date-related tasks were most troublesome.

8. Typing

Typing received 2,338 selections, tying with date management. The survey’s usage page also reports that 67% of its respondents wrote more TypeScript than JavaScript code. That figure describes the survey’s respondent group, not developers generally, and is not itself a measure of dissatisfaction with JavaScript.

9. Async code

Asynchronous code received 1,151 selections. When operations complete later, developers need to account for timing and outcomes as the rest of an application continues to run. MDN describes JavaScript’s support for asynchronous interaction, while the survey indicates that some respondents find async code challenging.

10. Finding packages

Finding packages received 1,102 selections. This is distinct from managing dependencies: locating a package that fits a need is one task, while maintaining project dependencies is another. The survey reports both among its respondents’ pain points.

Where the friction comes from

The survey’s pain points do not all describe the same layer. Some concern programming and application design, while others may involve dependencies, build tooling, or the APIs of a particular host. JavaScript itself is the language; browsers and Node.js provide environment-specific APIs, and frameworks and tools add further choices. Separating those layers helps explain why a complaint about a JavaScript project is not automatically a complaint about the core language.
