Use uv run for commands and scripts, and uvx (equivalent to uv tool run) for package-provided command-line tools. These workflows avoid manually installing a package into the Python environment you are currently using. They may still create an isolated environment, download Python or packages, or build a package as needed.
Choose the right uv command

These commands are not interchangeable in every context: choose according to whether you are running project code, a script, or a packaged CLI tool, and whether you want the environment to persist.
Run a command in a uv project
From the project directory, run uv run followed by the command. uv prepares the project’s Python environment before invoking it. For example, the official project guide demonstrates running Python code with uv run python -c "import example". A command can come from the project environment or be available outside it.
If a command needs an extra dependency for just one invocation, put --with before the command:

uv run --with httpx==0.26.0 python -c "import httpx; print(httpx.__version__)"This requests httpx 0.26.0 for that run, even if the project requires another version. It does not, by itself, change the project’s declared dependencies. Use the project’s dependency-management workflow when you want to make a requirement part of the project instead. Run a standalone Python script
Run a script directly with uv run script.py. A script with no external dependencies needs no dependency setup. For a script that does need packages, uv supports inline script metadata declaring dependencies and, optionally, a Python version requirement. uv uses that metadata to run the script in an environment isolated from the surrounding project and install the declared requirements there. Avoid preparing the surrounding project
When you run uv run in a directory containing pyproject.toml, uv installs the current project before running the script. If the script is independent and should not trigger that project setup, put --no-project before the script name:
uv run --no-project script.pyThe option belongs before script.py; it tells uv not to treat the current directory’s project as part of this run.

Run a package-provided CLI tool
For a tool distributed as a Python package, use uvx or its equivalent, uv tool run:
uvx ruff check .Replace ruff check . with the executable and arguments for the tool you need. uv creates a temporary virtual environment isolated from the current project to run the package. The tool is not thereby installed as a regular command for future shell sessions. See the uv tools guide.

Keep a CLI tool available
If you want to invoke a tool as a regular command later, use uv tool install <package>. This creates a persistent isolated environment and exposes the executable on PATH. That is different from uvx, which is suited to temporary or one-off use. Also note that uv tool run may use an already installed tool version unless you request a version or an isolation option changes that behavior.
Which Python does uv use?
uv generally checks an active or nearby virtual environment first, then searches for another available Python interpreter. If a suitable interpreter is unavailable, it may download one; this depends on configuration and options. You can select a Python version using uv’s Python options, or declare a version requirement in script metadata. A version requirement does not mean every run downloads a uv-managed interpreter: uv can use an existing suitable installation. What “without installing” means
These commands spare you from manually installing a package into the environment you are currently using. They do not guarantee that nothing is installed or downloaded: uv may create an environment, retrieve packages, download Python, or build a package to run the requested code. “Temporary” and “isolated” describe where dependencies are placed and whether the environment is kept, not an absence of installation activity.
