Quantum error-correcting codes protect quantum information by encoding one logical qubit across multiple physical qubits, repeatedly checking carefully chosen relationships among them, and using those check results to infer and handle errors. They do not make any physical qubit noiseless. Their protection improves as a code grows only when the hardware, measurement circuits and decoder operate below the relevant error threshold.

How do quantum error-correcting codes protect qubits from noise?

Physical qubits can suffer bit-flip-like and phase-flip-like errors, faulty gates or measurements, and leakage out of the intended computational states. A quantum error-correcting code spreads the information in one logical qubit across an entangled state of several physical qubits. This redundancy lets the system detect many errors without directly measuring the encoded quantum information.

The code repeatedly measures parity checks, also called stabilizer checks. These checks reveal whether the encoded state has shifted into an error subspace, while being designed not to reveal the logical state itself. Quantum error correction is therefore active control—not a passive shield: gates, measurements, resets, timing and classical computation all contribute to the protection.

What is a syndrome measurement?

The outcomes of parity checks form a syndrome. A syndrome flags changes consistent with errors; it does not necessarily identify the exact physical fault. Repeating checks creates a time history that helps distinguish a real change from a faulty measurement.

A classical decoder processes that history, taking account of the code, measurement circuit and expected noise. It selects a plausible fault pattern and either directs a recovery operation or updates the system’s record of the inferred error so later operations can account for it. The distinction matters: checks detect evidence of errors, while the decoder interprets that evidence and determines how to respond.

What is a logical qubit?

A logical qubit is quantum information encoded collectively across multiple physical qubits. The physical qubits are the hardware elements that are actually manipulated and measured; the logical qubit is the protected information those operations are intended to preserve. Since checks avoid directly revealing the logical state, the system can gather error information while retaining the encoded information.

There is no single physical-qubit count for every logical qubit. The overhead depends on the code family, desired protection, hardware layout, noise and decoder. A larger code can use more physical qubits to tolerate more faults, but only if the added checks and operations themselves are reliable enough.

What does code distance mean?

Code distance summarizes the minimum number of physical errors needed to produce an undetectable logical operation in an ideal code. In surface-code implementations, increasing distance generally strengthens protection against a larger number of faults, while increasing qubit and decoding costs.

Distance is not a guarantee that every error pattern up to that number will be corrected in a real device: circuit faults, measurement errors, correlated events and leakage affect practical performance. A measured improvement at one distance is evidence about that implementation and noise regime, not a universal scaling rule.

Why does the error threshold matter?

A threshold is a noise boundary for a particular code and implementation model. Below it, increasing code size can reduce logical errors; above it, scaling up may not improve reliability. There is no universal threshold percentage: it depends on the physical noise model, gates and measurement circuits, connectivity, and decoder.

The Willow surface-code experiment discussed below measured improved suppression as distance increased. Separately, a 2024 bivariate-bicycle code study reported a 0.7% threshold for its specified standard circuit-based noise model. These results are not directly comparable as a contest between percentages: the code, noise assumptions, circuits and decoder differ.

What have recent quantum error-correction experiments shown?

Willow surface-code memory

Google Quantum AI and collaborators reported a distance-7 surface-code memory using 101 physical qubits. In their paper, published online on 9 December 2024, its logical error rate was 0.143% ± 0.003% per correction cycle. Increasing code distance by two produced a measured logical-error suppression factor of 2.14 ± 0.02, and the distance-7 logical memory lifetime was 2.4 ± 0.3 times that of its best constituent physical qubit. These are results from that experimental system, not claims that a fault-tolerant general-purpose quantum computer has been completed. Read the Nature paper.

Bivariate-bicycle quantum LDPC memory

A 2024 study by Acharya and collaborators reported a bivariate-bicycle quantum low-density-parity-check (LDPC) code family. Its work describes degree-six connectivity with nonlocal edges and a graph that can be decomposed into planar subgraphs. It reported preserving 12 logical qubits for nearly one million syndrome cycles using 288 physical qubits, assuming a physical error rate of 0.1%. That figure is tied to the paper’s specified code, protocol and assumptions, not a general resource estimate for quantum computing. The study reported a 0.7% threshold under its standard circuit-based noise model. Read the Nature paper.

The surface code is designed for local connectivity on a two-dimensional square lattice and has multiple small experimental demonstrations, including the Willow below-threshold result. The bivariate-bicycle example reports lower overhead for its demonstrated family, but its connectivity and circuit requirements differ. A lower physical-qubit count alone does not establish that one code is the better choice for a given processor.

How many physical qubits are needed for one logical qubit?

The count varies with the code, target error rate, hardware and implementation; there is no fixed conversion from physical to logical qubits. One concrete estimate from the Willow paper illustrates the cost of demanding stronger protection: the authors extrapolated that reaching a logical error rate of 10⁻⁶ would require a distance-27 logical qubit using 1,457 physical qubits. This was an extrapolation from their results, not a demonstrated device or a universal requirement.

Different code families can change the trade-off. The bivariate-bicycle study’s 288-physical-qubit, 12-logical-qubit result uses its own stated assumptions and a different connectivity model, so it should not be treated as a direct substitute for the Willow estimate.

Can quantum error correction fix every error?

No. A code protects against specified classes of errors within the limits of its distance and implementation; it cannot guarantee recovery from every possible fault. Correlated errors can violate the simplifying assumption that faults occur independently, and leakage can move a transmon qubit outside the computational basis and spread through interactions.

A 2023 Google Quantum AI study reported an average leakage population below 1 × 10⁻³ after its leakage-removal approach. That result demonstrates mitigation in the studied setting, not that leakage is eliminated across quantum hardware. Read the Nature Physics paper.

What engineering problems remain?

Keeping decoding up to speed

The decoder must process syndrome data fast enough for the system’s operating requirements. The Willow work reported a real-time decoder with average latency of 63 microseconds at distance 5, alongside a 1.1-microsecond correction-cycle time in its implementation. These are distinct reported timing metrics and configurations; they should not be read as a single decoder-latency figure or compared without their contexts. The paper describes the decoder and timing results.

Managing correlations and leakage

The Willow study found rare correlated events that limited high-distance repetition-code performance. Leakage is another challenge: leaked states can persist and affect interacting qubits. Both phenomena can undermine protection if the code, circuit or decoder assumes a simpler error pattern than the hardware produces.

Balancing qubit count against hardware demands

Surface codes benefit from local two-dimensional connectivity but use substantial physical-qubit overhead. Lower-overhead code families may require nonlocal connections or more demanding circuits. Code and hardware therefore need to be designed together; raw qubit count is only one part of the engineering cost.
