More than 97% of respondents in GitHub’s 2024 survey said they had used AI coding tools at work at some point. That is evidence of widespread trial among a specific group of enterprise workers—not proof that nearly all developers use these tools regularly or every day.
What GitHub’s 97% figure measures
Wakefield Research conducted the online survey for GitHub from February 26 to March 18, 2024. It asked whether respondents had used AI coding tools at any point, in or outside work; it did not measure how often they used them. The headline statistic refers specifically to reported use at work at some point. GitHub’s survey article was published in August 2024 and updated in April 2025.
GitHub defined AI coding tools as developer tools that use generative AI and large language models to assist with engineering across the software development cycle. Some respondents’ employers did not sanction tool use, so an individual’s reported use does not necessarily mean their organization had formally approved or adopted the tools.
Who took part in the survey
The survey included 2,000 non-student, non-manager respondents working at companies with at least 1,000 employees. There were 500 respondents in each of four countries: the United States, Brazil, India, and Germany. Eligible job titles included software engineer, developer, programmer, data scientist, and software designer. GitHub says about 86% of participants came from unique companies.

GitHub reports a 95-in-100 chance that results in each market fall within plus or minus 4.4 percentage points of the result that would have been obtained by interviewing everyone in that represented regional population. That margin does not make the sample representative of every developer worldwide: it describes the survey’s stated precision for the populations it sampled.
What respondents reported beyond trying the tools
Employer support differed by country
The share reporting that their company actively encouraged or allowed AI coding tool use ranged from 59% in Germany to 88% in the United States. Depending on the market, GitHub reports 30–40% said their employer actively encouraged use, while a further 29–49% said use was permitted with limited encouragement. Individual experimentation was therefore more widespread than universal organizational endorsement.

Perceived code-quality gains were not uniform
Respondents who perceived an improvement in code quality represented 90% in the United States, 81% in India, 61% in Brazil, and 60% in Germany. These are self-reported perceptions, not results from an independent assessment of code.
Respondents also described learning and testing uses
Between 60% and 71% said AI tools made it easy to adopt a new programming language or understand an existing codebase. More than 98% said their organizations had experimented with AI-assisted test-case generation, though reported frequency varied across markets.

Respondents also said they used time saved with AI for system design, collaboration, and learning. In the United States and Germany, 47% reported using the extra time for collaboration and system design. The survey records what respondents said about their experience; it does not establish that AI caused productivity, quality, or security improvements.
How the finding compares with newer surveys
Other surveys published more recently also report broad AI use, but their results should not be treated as a direct continuation of GitHub’s 97% figure. They differ in sample, geography, timing, and whether they ask about any use, regular use, or particular tool categories.

Stack Overflow’s September 2026 retrospective also reports that 59% of respondents in a smaller April 2026 pulse used AI agents. That figure concerns agents in a separate pulse, not the same population or measure as GitHub’s 2024 ever-used result. The differing definitions and samples mean these figures show that AI use is a prominent topic across surveys, not a clean year-by-year adoption curve.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the survey does—and does not—show
- It shows: In early 2024, more than 97% of this surveyed group reported having used AI coding tools at work at least once.
- It does not show: That more than 97% of all developers worldwide used AI coding tools regularly, daily, or with employer approval.
- It records: Respondents’ views about code quality, learning, testing, and saved time—not controlled evidence that the tools produced those outcomes.
GitHub commissioned the survey and sells developer AI tools, a relevant context when interpreting favorable perceptions. In the U.S. results PDF, Duolingo Senior Engineering Manager Jonathan Burket described GitHub Copilot as helping developers stay focused and spend less time looking through libraries and difficult documentation. This is a named customer comment, not an independent or controlled finding. Read GitHub’s U.S. survey-results PDF.
