Then set up equipment control or microphone privacy only if those choices matter to your household. There is no single best resolution, audio format, or HDMI setting for every TV and sound system.
1. Confirm the HDMI connection, TV input, Wi-Fi, and account
Connect the TV to the Cube’s HDMI OUT port with a high-speed HDMI cable. Amazon’s U.S. setup guide says the cable is required but not included. Switch the TV to the HDMI input used by the Cube, then complete the on-screen Wi-Fi and Amazon account setup. See Amazon’s Fire TV Cube setup instructions for the initial connection steps.
If setup cannot connect to Wi-Fi or your account, use the troubleshooting steps in Amazon’s setup guide rather than changing unrelated display settings.
2. Place the Cube for dependable hands-free voice pickup
Keep the Cube in an open spot where its microphones can hear you. Amazon recommends placing it 1 ft (30 cm) away from speakers and warns against a closed cabinet. Its setup guide puts it plainly: “Don’t place the Fire TV Cube in a closed cabinet as it needs to hear your voice.”

If a cabinet is necessary for other equipment that you want the Cube to control, Amazon suggests a separately sold IR extender, positioned on the same shelf as that equipment. An extender can help with equipment control; it does not solve blocked voice pickup.
3. Check picture and sound settings against your equipment
Open Settings > Display & Sounds to find picture and audio options such as video resolution and audio output. Amazon also lists screensaver, display mirroring, HDMI CEC, and other controls in this area. The right choices depend on what your TV and any connected audio equipment support, so treat these as compatibility checks—not universal optimizations.

Video resolution
Choose a resolution supported by the connected display. If the current picture is stable and looks right, there is no reason to change it just to apply a supposedly “best” value. If you do change it, check that normal playback still displays correctly afterward. Amazon’s Fire TV home screen and settings overview describes the settings area; exact options can differ by device.
Audio output
Choose an output that matches the actual connection path and capabilities of your TV, receiver, or soundbar. Verify playback after changing it. The available evidence does not establish one audio format or output setting as best for every combination of equipment.

HDMI CEC and other display controls
Change HDMI CEC only when you have a reason to coordinate control between connected devices, and check how your TV and other equipment respond. Amazon lists the option but does not prescribe one setting for all setups.
4. Set up Equipment Control only for devices you want the Cube to operate
For compatible connected devices—such as some A/V receivers and soundbars—go to Settings > Equipment Control to add or manage them. The initial setup may also ask equipment-control questions. Compatibility is not guaranteed across all brands or configurations, so follow the prompts for the specific device you want to control.

If you connect a set-top box to HDMI IN
Amazon’s U.K. instructions for Fire TV Cube (3rd Generation) describe configuring a connected set-top box from Inputs. That procedure requires line of sight and a high-speed HDMI cable rated at 18 Gbps or higher. Amazon says HDMI control on the set-top box may need to be disabled if setup fails. These instructions are specific to that model and setup; see Amazon’s set-top box instructions and its supported third-party device guidance.

The physical microphone mute button on the Cube turns off hands-free voice control; the button lights red when muted. This is a direct choice between Alexa voice convenience and microphone privacy. Amazon says the blue indicator light shows when Alexa is recording and sending a request to Amazon’s secure cloud.

You can review, hear, and delete voice recordings in the Alexa app. Amazon also documents voice requests to delete the last request or all recordings. For more on Alexa availability and controls on Cube, see Amazon’s Fire TV Cube Alexa help.
The remote’s voice button is separate from the Cube’s hands-free microphones. Amazon says it cannot be used for voice navigation or to make on-screen selections.
6. Review other preferences when they fit your household
You do not need to change every option during first setup. Review the settings that address a specific need:
- Preferences: parental controls, notifications, privacy, language, and time.
- My Fire TV or Device & Software: software updates, storage, restart, sleep, and reset.
- Accessibility: screen reader, high-contrast text, captions, and other accessibility options.
Use reset for troubleshooting or when preparing to hand off the device, not as an ordinary first-run tweak. Menu labels and feature availability can vary by Fire TV generation, region, and software version; Amazon notes that the Fire TV experience differs across some devices.
