The 61TB Solidigm SSD in the old roadmap headline is the D5-P5336, a data-center QLC drive Solidigm announced in July 2023 with capacities up to 61.44TB. It was designed for high-capacity server storage and read-intensive workloads—not as a typical gaming-PC upgrade. Solidigm now lists the broader D5 family at up to 122TB.

What happened to the 61TB SSD roadmap?

The “coming” language came from a November 2022 roadmap story about server storage. Solidigm later announced the D5-P5336 on July 20, 2023, with product capacities ranging from 7.68TB to 61.44TB. The roadmap item became a launched product; the launch announcement is Solidigm’s July 2023 announcement.

The 61.44TB figure describes the largest announced D5-P5336 capacity, not the current top capacity of the entire D5 family. Solidigm’s current data-center portfolio page lists the D5 family at up to 122TB (accessed October 4, 2026): Solidigm D5 family.

What is the D5-P5336 designed to do?

Solidigm positions the D5-P5336 as a high-density data-center SSD for read-intensive storage needs. Its launch announcement names AI and machine learning, content delivery networks (CDNs), scale-out network-attached storage (NAS), and object storage as intended workload areas. These applications can involve large datasets that need to be stored and served efficiently.

SOLIDIGM D5-P5430 15.36 TB - 2.5 Internal - U.2 [PCI Express NVMe 4.0 x4] - Read Intensive
  • High Capacity: 15.36 TB solid state drive provides ample storage for demanding applications
  • Fast Data Transfer: U.2 NVMe 4.0 x4 interface delivers up to 6 Gbps data transfer speeds
  • Compact Design: 2.5-inch form factor is ideal for desktop and laptop computers
  • Reliable Performance: PCIe NVMe interface ensures high speed data access and low latency
  • Easy Installation: Pre-installed Windows 10 software makes setup simple

Solidigm said the drive could store “up to 6× more data in the same space versus an all-HDD array.” That is the manufacturer’s stated comparison in its launch material, not an independent benchmark or a universal result; actual density depends on the array and deployment being compared.

Why use QLC for bulk storage?

The D5-P5336 uses quad-level cell (QLC) NAND. QLC is suited to high-capacity storage tiers, but a storage system’s performance depends on more than the SSD’s maximum capacity or sequential speed. Solidigm’s discussion of its CSAL software layer describes a tiered approach: pair QLC capacity with higher-endurance SSDs that absorb writes, while using QLC for dense storage. This is Solidigm’s architecture guidance, not independent validation.

SOLIDIGM D5-P5430 7.68 TB Solid State Drive - 2.5 Internal - PCI Express NVMe [PCI Express NVMe 4.0 x4] - Read Intensive
  • Size: 2.5
  • Storage Capacity: 7.68TB
  • Interface Type: Pcie 4.0 X4, Nvme
  • Form Factor: U.2 15mm
  • Lithography: 4th Gen Qlc 3d Nand

For mixed workloads, the practical question is whether data placement and write patterns fit the system’s tiers. Network bandwidth can also constrain storage performance, so a drive’s peak specification alone does not determine how quickly an application will access data. Solidigm discusses these trade-offs in its CSAL technical overview.

How fast is the 61.44TB configuration?

Solidigm’s D5-P5336 product brief specifies sequential throughput of 7,000 MB/s for a specified 61.44TB configuration. This is a manufacturer product specification—not an independent test, nor a promise that every application will achieve that speed. Sequential throughput describes a particular access pattern; workload performance also depends on the server, storage software, network, and mix of reads and writes. The figure appears in the D5-P5336 product brief.

Is it suitable for a gaming PC?

Not as an ordinary consumer upgrade. The original roadmap report explicitly framed these drives for server applications, and Solidigm’s later materials position the D5-P5336 for data-center storage. A 61.44TB enterprise SSD is intended for infrastructure such as servers and storage arrays; the headline should not be read as a promise of a mainstream desktop drive. The historical roadmap context is reported in Tom’s Hardware’s November 2022 coverage.
