A 2016 report from Jon Peddie Research described AMD’s upcoming Vega GPU as “also known as Greenland” and said it would feature 4096 stream processors, with up to 32 GB of HBM2 expected. Those figures were a report about an anticipated design—not an AMD-issued specification for a retail card named Greenland. AMD later confirmed HBM2 in Vega’s architecture; its 2017 Radeon RX Vega announcement specified 8 GB for that product family’s High Bandwidth Cache.
What did the early Greenland report claim?
In 2016, Jon Peddie Research identified AMD’s upcoming Vega GPU as “also known as Greenland.” The report stated that the GPU would feature 4096 stream processors and said Vega 10 was expected to have up to 32 GB of HBM2 VRAM. Both details should be read as claims in that report, not as specifications AMD published for a Greenland-branded retail product. Jon Peddie Research’s 2016 report
What did AMD later confirm about Vega?
AMD publicly demonstrated Vega at its New Horizon event on December 13, 2016. The announcement described a live 4K game demonstration but did not provide a Greenland specification table. AMD’s December 2016 announcement

On January 5, 2017, AMD released preliminary details about Vega’s architecture, including HBM2 in a high-bandwidth cache and controller, flexible compute units, and a Draw Stream Binning Rasterizer. AMD said then that Vega-based GPU products were expected to ship in the first half of 2017; that was a forecast made at the time, not a statement of current availability. - Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
AMD’s architecture announcement confirms that HBM2 was part of Vega, but it does not confirm the earlier report’s anticipated capacity of up to 32 GB for a specific model.
How do the reported figures compare with the later RX Vega announcement?
| Evidence | What it says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Jon Peddie Research, 2016 | 4096 stream processors; up to 32 GB HBM2 expected | A third-party report about anticipated Vega/Greenland specifications, not an AMD retail specification sheet. Source |
| AMD, January 5, 2017 | HBM2 included in Vega’s high-bandwidth cache and controller | Official architecture information; it does not validate the 32 GB forecast. Source |
| AMD, July 30, 2017 | 8 GB HBM2 High Bandwidth Cache for the Radeon RX Vega family | A specification AMD announced for the later RX Vega family, not proof of a Greenland-branded card. Source |
The capacities describe different evidence and objects: a 2016 expectation for Vega 10 versus AMD’s later announced RX Vega family. They should not be combined into one confirmed specification.

Is Greenland a confirmed retail GPU name?
The sources reviewed do not provide an AMD-issued specification sheet for a retail GPU named Greenland confirming 4096 stream processors and 32 GB of HBM2 as the final configuration of one product. That is a limit of the available documentation here, not proof that no other documentation exists. The careful conclusion is that Jon Peddie Research used Greenland as an alias for the anticipated Vega GPU in 2016, while AMD’s later public materials discussed Vega architecture and Radeon RX Vega products.
AMD executive Raja Koduri, then senior vice president and chief architect of Radeon Technologies Group, called the high-bandwidth cache “a pivotal disruption that has the potential to impact the whole GPU market.” That was AMD’s promotional perspective in its January 5, 2017 announcement, not an independently measured performance result.
